Guys, we decided to buy a new Poulan Pro 18" 42 Cc 2 stroke chainsaw as our old one just isn't getting the job done anymore, due to wear and tear. We thought we'd share the unboxing and test run with you guys.

I love the sound of a chainsaw and the smell of fresh cut wood. My husband cut our firewood for over 20 years. He has been gone since 2011 and I had to sell the farm after he died. I still miss him and all the outdoor things we did together. He used a Stihl saw. Luv y'all.

I've always wanted a chainsaw. I'm 82 and still want one just to have in case.........Like the rest of my tools. Most people know I have what they need in a hurry or an emegency :) I learned a lot from this video....thank you so much.

I bought a Poulan pro 18" saw in 2000...I've used it to cut firewood every year since. It's a little hard to start sometimes, but easy to replace fuel lines and gaskets. Just bought a new 18" Poulan about a week ago to replace the old one for $149 at Lowes...

I have that first saw both as a Craftsman and Husq label. What I did was add a "U" shaped spacer into the channel where the screw rides. That hugs the screw and keeps at parallel to the bar. Instead of 'dipping' at an angle as you tighten and likely bends in the process. Now I am going to add an aluminum heat shield as simply a longer channel than the short "U". Thanks for the tip.

I do the same and buy a new Poulan every 3 years. The rancher neighbors use the more expensive saws but those need costly repair every 2 years. I just really like the new factor every 3 years or so. I use mine every week during the winter.

My Jonsered 2041 is 17 years old. Replaced throttle wire, spark plug, piston+ring and clutch for ~100€. Also bought a good used Jonsered 2050 for 100€. Can't afford to buy a new saw every three years.

Wish you had taken it right back as think the threads are fairly damaged as way overnighted and threads do stretch. Also pay attention not to run out of bar oil and if you do stop right then. Also your chain way too loose before even using first time and when no oil the chain will stretch quickly as gets too tight and hot (at least if previously adjusted right). Nice to see you out working though and stay safe. Safety pants or chaps are something well worth your money as accidents do happen with experts as well. Enjoy your videos.

i used to use poulan saws in the past. they became very difficult to use without any drama. my neighbor had a husqvarna which cost almost twice the price of my poulan and constantly tried to talk me into buying one. he claimed he had very little issues with his saw. i had went through 2 poulan saws while he was still on his first husqvarna. we both used our saws regularly pretty close to the same. i broke down and bought a husqvarna have had no issues since i bought it. i bought this saw in 1999 and it is still strong and has easily out-performed the poulan saws that i had purchased in the past. i wished i would have bought a husqvarna long before i did. if i had bought it years ago, i would have saved form having to buy 3 saws. this is a time where it is definitely worth spending the extra money for an item. a poulan back in the 1970's might have been good, but now, they are really cheaply made. the only reason i had bought poulan saws previously was because of my dad swearing by them.....but he purchased his saws years ago when most things were made with quality. i hope you have good luck with your saw compared to my poulan saws that i have had in the past.

You had me laughing at the start. But good video all around. Definitely spend some time in field while using it to tune it. That thing can really put in some work. When she’s at the sweet spot. I spent a whole weekend cutting and clearing. Had maybe one stall the whole time. (User error) and doesn’t overheat like i thought it would. The chains supplied does the job. But there are better cutting chains to use than what you get out the box. Good video!!

I got a used poulan 18" 42cc the newer model for $80. Saved $100. And got a Walmart black max 20" 50cc new in box on sale for $75 with 3 year warranty , retail $220, but regularly go on sale $75 -$130. The Poulan only come with a 1yr warranty , longer if pay more. Black max 3 yr warranty included. Black max are same as ryobi, black decker, homelite saws. are assembled by black and decker with Honda engines that honda sells that didn't pass honda higher quality control. If get a better chain, and spark plug on the Poulan and do a muffler mod, plus drill hole in air intake to get it more air they are just fine for non everyday use and will last years. Key is don't put them away with gas , run them dry and then put only oil back in fuel tank to keep lubricanted the primer ball and fuel lines till next use.

That was a great demonstration on using your new Popular Pro chainsaw! The gas powered chainsaws are too heavy for me to handle now so I ended up getting a cheap electric one since I haven't been able to go out in the woods cutting down trees anymore. I have used the Poulan and it worked very well but that was a long time ago. My favorite was a 10" Echo that was lighter and easier for a lady to handle. Best birthday gift my husband gave me. Do you use an ax to chop your firewood or a wood splitter? I've only used an ax to chop fire wood. However I've seen how beneficial it is to have a wood splitter for some who can no longer use an ax as they used to. I don't have a fireplace any more so haven't kept up on the firewood preparations for winter. It looks like you and Dearly are getting the job done with your new saw cutting the logs into the lengths needed to split for your fireplace. Hope y'all have a great day!

I'd suggest reading the manual to extend the life of your saw. You'd be surprised how much more you'd learn. For instance there is a break in period. Believe it may be preferable to first pull at full choke, then at half choke. The pictures above the choke likely indicate that.

Thanks for that - you made me laugh with the wrench. i did the same thing.. looking through the package for the wrench only to find it stuck under the handle. - not sure that's the best place to stow it - but at least they included it. than yu followed up with the triangular piece.. this is great. I sat there studying it wondering WTF... So.. I suppose if you had bought the left-handed version of the saw... this would use this piece to fill the hole on the opposing side.. ... I'm not a pro either so this was great to see. - your humor is not lost I assure you. "yeah that bolt was pretty tight but I've been working out.." Nice demo - I like this saw and can't wait to try it out. Good camera work to. THX!!

Sometimes rental yards, (especially United Rentals) sell their older perfectly functioning power tools for dirt cheap so they can buy new ones for a tax write off. Ask them if they want to sell a certain tool that they've had for a year or two and sometimes they'll sell it to you super cheap.

Thank you for not revving the nuts off it when it first started. It frustrates me when people do that even with old, worn in saws or any 2-stroke.
@Mike-su8si3 жыл бұрын
Yeah me to. Theirs a aluminum piece on most of those poulan saws that'll need took off because they will bend after using the saw a bunch then you'll not know until your chain hits it and then it messes up the teeth and the teeth that fit in the bar so Whatever that aluminum piece is for i take it off mine it's made me ruin a few chains in the past You can unscrew it off the bottom near the cover and chain or you can bend and break it off
@highwatercircutrider4 жыл бұрын
That tool is commonly referred to as a ‘Scrench’. Your the first amateur on you tube, that I have seen actually warm his saw up before going directly to hard cutting . A much longer warm up would avoid a ‘cold cylinder seize up’ .
@arthurhudgens82133 жыл бұрын
Yeah polan pro 18 inch is indeed a good running saw.my only heatsource is wood so my saw has to run.min last about 3 or 4 years cutting about 10 Rick a year .I am as careful as I can be with it .do good maintenance keep it in out of the weather. When they fail I just buy a new one . I'd rather have a fresh cheap saw every few years as to try and make an expensive one last.
@JoseSanchez-wb5rz5 жыл бұрын
Good Video,those saws are good ,but on that particular model there is a known problem with the recoil starter,they break easy inside where the rope winds,but maybe the one from your old saw might bolt right in,good luck !

You can, the whole replacement side plate is relatively inexpensive. I’ve even used old saws with broken chain tensioners that worked just fine, you just loosen the bar nuts and hold the bar out as tight as you can and then tighten the bar nuts.

If you service those poulans properly every year they will last a long time, but are still just decent saws. The best thing to do is buy an old pro saw though. I have husqvarna, stihl, and homelite saws that are 40-50 years old and still run great and cut better than any modern budget saw. It really is a good investment to get a 300$ saw that will last you a lifetime rather than spend money on these every few years

I agree, I just commented about that in another of Kevin's videos yesterday...all my family use either protective safety chainsaw trousers or bib and braces and at least steel toe capped boots . I had been watching Kevin's past videos on cutting wood and realised I had never seen Kevin wearing protective wear trousers or bib and braces. It does make me nervous . I was hoping one of his subscribers could recommend some available in the USA. I seem to remember the best ones have fibres in them that catch in the chain and stop it dead if you should slip.
