4:43 if you're technologically minded you'd know that Apple changes boot slash screens depending on the color of the bezels/body color. Note how his is a black IPhone with a white splash screen made for white iPhone models. So these phones have gone through a aftermarket refurbishment for the new look. The housing and screen are most likely not OEM manufactured. Just a little key note disclaimer 😅

As for me, my first iPhone was the 5s, and I absolutely loved that phone! Touch ID, A7 processor, and gorgeous design, not to mention 6yrs of support, was just so dope for the time :) (Btw Luke, the boxes you received already looked like a knockoff, with weird fonts on the back, weird Apple logo placement, poor sealing job, and when you booted the phone up, the Apple logo boot screen was white, not black, which means the logic board belongs to the White / Silver iPhone 5. And the way the back glass not laying flat to the metal housing at 10:00 kinda makes it look an aftermarket housing, so maybe the seller swapped it out with one.)

My favorite form factor - I missed my replacement cycle and when i finally upgraded I got a gen 1 SE. Still using now and (funny you should mention the size issue) you would not believe the grief and chiding I get for having such a TINY phone. Even the all loving Starbucks baristas chuckle at the drive thru when i use my app - must not compute with their photo memory seeing all those soccer moms with their TABLET sized phones :-)

My first was the iPhone 4S, in November 2011. Still have it, the box and everything, and it's basically pristine 😎 I do remember watching the keynote for the iPhone 5 a year later, I also remember how this was the first time we heard the term 'space grey' for a color. All the Apple podcasts and KZbin videos were discussing how to properly manage the enlarged screen, lol. Also, these phones were prone to scratches or having the color wear off, at least it was a big talking point. Ah, almost a decade ago... It's fun to look back!

Hey Luke! Yeah man, I owned an iPhone 5, actually.. iPhone 5 was my first iPhone, I got it when I was 15. I was blown away it was my first experience with smartphones after I had this blackberry Tourch 9800, it was like a phone with a touch screen and it opened so it had a keyboard as well. This video brought real good memories to me, it was my first iPhone, and none of us at our house were actually into the "smartphones" except for me.. Thanks for sharing this Luke.

After watching this, I checked the box on my $40 black 64g I bought on eBay. It had none of the flaws in this video. Came with apple stickers and sim tray remover and everything. Was advertised as an open box demo unit and that it wouldn’t work with a SIM card. eBay seller was here in California and was an auction. But when I received the phone in the mail, it wasn’t what it was advertised. Wrapping was a little old. Phone was flawless and actually worked. I could have sworn I commented earlier but can’t find it.

6:52 I'm not sure if anybody noticed this, but the apple logo looks off-centre compared to an actual iPhone (too high). I also wanted to note that the fact that the boot screen was white, shows that the phone was a for parts phone with a new casing and display, which is why it is in such good condition. If the phone was genuine, you'd have a black background startup screen, to match the finish of the phone itself.

My Apple journey was kind of a weird one but my first new Apple product that I ever bought was an iPhone 5 32GB in white. To date, it was probably the best phone I ever had and I do miss how good it was. My iPhone XS Max is great and all but something about the 5 was just so good that no other iPhone has replicated for me. I have since had a 5S, 6 Plus, 7 Plus, XS Max and I will likely buy the new one this fall. I wish I hadn't sold all my old iPhone...especially the 5 but the 6 Plus had bendgate/Touch IC issues, the 7 Plus I ended up actually profiting on after 2 years of ownership, and my XS Max will likely just sit in my drawer with my PSP, 4th gen iPod classic (my 5.5 & 3rd gen still get plenty of use) and all my new in box earpods and lightning cable from all the phones of years past. For what it's worth, I have managed to keep almost all my notebooks. My very first PowerBook G3 still works and I will never get rid of that, my TiBook G4 is in pieces in my basement but still did work...for the most part, my PowerBook G4 1.5 still works albeit slowly, my unibody C2D 13.3 MBP hasn't seen much use recently but my E2011 2.7 i7 13.3 MBP still sees weekly use and my 2017 i7 13.3 MBA still gets daily use along side my workhorse 5,1. The moral of the story is "Buy nice or buy twice.". Apple products are built to last and hold their value very well.

I skipped both of the metal 5s. Hated the boxy edges of the 4/5 and went back to my 3GS for a more comfortable hand feel for small hands. When my 3GS died I bought the 5c. The 6’s rounded edges felt like a throwback to my original, and now I’m happy with my XR.

So one thing to note is that t-mobile and other sellers sold the iPhone 5 for two more years after release so these can come nib with ios 7 and 8 as Apple mailed remaining units to them and kept making them for the carriers

If you check the serial number on Apple's site, if it says that it's been activated then it's a refurb. If it's original and never used it'll tell you to activate it (an unactivated one won't have a "valid purchase date" because Apple uses the date the device was first activated on).

Use always a black Piel Frama iMagnum with it. Do it always with my iPad’s. Must upgrade my iPad Pro 12,9 inch (2th Generation) to a 4th Generation.

These are so common on AliExpress. Basically refurb phones (they almost always have a new housing, screen, and battery) in fake boxes that are sealed up to give the impression that they're "new". It's fairly common to purchase phones like this if you live in a country with worse economy than north america. There's a Russian KZbinr (DimaViper) who unboxes these kinds of iPhones all the time.
