I know it's been 4.5 years since this video was made, but I just stumbled upon it. Great video and nice old Elgin. According to the serial number, it was made in 1883 and is a Grade 87. By comparison, the production run on this watch was not that high. Good buy and worth putting in a new mainspring. Do you still have it?. Or did you resell it?. Just curious. Or is it nosy?. What's the difference?.
@bunnspecial2 жыл бұрын
I still have the watch. For some reason I rarely sell anything. One of these days I will have to clean house and just keep a few good ones.

I stumbled across the old (non running) pocket watches on ebay. I have no idea how to repair or build one, but I'd like to try. I can pretty much fix anything that you kick, crank, push, pull, plug in, strike, zip or throw to start. I'd like to add wind to that though. Does anybody know what kind of watch would be the easiest to work on for a beginner?
@bunnspecial4 жыл бұрын
Dollar watches are big and hard to break. From what I have seen most just need a cleaning.

I haven't worked on watches yet but I was an engineer before retiring. I was wondering could the mainspring have become disconnected because someone tried to wind it in the wrong direction?
@bunnspecial4 жыл бұрын
I don't think so. On pendant winding watches there is a clutch in the mechanism that only turns the mainspring the correct way, turn the pendant the other way and nothing happens. Key wind has a click that you would have to break in order to turn it the wrong way. I think the mainspring got tired and relaxed itself off the hook.
@gartmorn4 жыл бұрын
@@bunnspecial thanks for the reply. I looked further into how these mechanisms work after watching your video and now better understand how it works. Thanks again.

I know very well what you mean about other people and the things they do, I often refer to who ever they may be as a "cowboy" I have a 18s Hampden RR grade pocket watch that landed on my bench about a year ago, it was running but when I started to break it down for a full service I immediatly found the balance cock screw was not the correct screw infact it wasn't even a watch screw, I am not sure what caused the cowboy in question to use this method for a repair, but after getting the balance cock off I could see the hole in the plate was stripped out I seen the threaded end of the screw was a (hang on to your knickers and get ready to burst into some profanity) self tapping machining screw and the head had been poorly filed down to fit in the hole of the balance cock in fact the screw head fit so tightly in the hole at first I thought I was going break the head off as I didn't know at this point what I was really dealing with, the screw head had a polished finish just like the rest of the screws, so I didn't immediatly become suspiciouse of anything, as it turned out I am guessing the screw head fitting tight the cowboy in question didn't know he was just fighting the resistance of the screw head in the balance cock and was actually stripping the threaded hole in the full bridge plate, infact I could push the screw part way into the hole, as it turned out the friction from the alignment pins was tight enough to hold the balance cock in position on it's own with out any screw, the good thing is it's a watch that I bought for myself, and only because of other watch work that has priority and me just not doing anything about it yet it's still that way, in fact it's in my shirt pocket as I post this comment and keeping very good time, one of these days I will get around to tapping knew threads and putting in a watch screw that will actually work as intended. P.S. I appologize to actual profetional cowboys for using this term
@bunnspecial5 жыл бұрын
Very good horror story. This is what I fear when I buy old pocket watches, you don't know what was done to it before you get it. I see a lot of adjustments to the balance cock because of balance staff replacements gone wrong. Sometimes an incorrect hole jewel thrown in for good measure.
@vernonthompson72095 жыл бұрын
@@bunnspecial Like You I take a deep breath when I buy a old watch but at the same time I look forward to it as I don't know what I will find as far as people that should have their hands slapped and made to stand in the corner for a couple hours have done, of course it usually means damage beyond repair in the area they was messing around in and a total part replacement, or they didn't put it back together correctly and something isn't quit in it's place. P.S have you ever noticed that the majority of the watches that other people screwed with is almost always a pocket watch? and it's usually 18s, some 16s,12s but mostly the 18s, seems like nobody messes with wristwatches, I think it's the large watch sizes because they are easier to see and the smaller the watch the more intimmidated they are and don't want to do it
@bunnspecial5 жыл бұрын
I agree. The larger the watch the greater the chance it has been screwed with. I have only seen auto wristwatches with the auto removed. I have passed on many pocket watches because I saw that it was screwed with. Still some get by. Not that I don't like a good challenge.

Still doing my own stunts. It costs to much to have someone do them for me. I still wonder about the mainspring. I didn't see a T end and I don't see where they put the hook in the barrel wall. Unless the barrel is gilded and it covers the seam.
