@matthewdekker606410 ай бұрын
Yes, I can't imagine it moves the same way. I was trying to think if maybe all the holes are symmetrical, then the drag won't really affect it, but I've had wiffleballs with symmetrical holes, and you can still make them curve (and they can't travel as fast/far when thrown hard). If the material is really dense, that would probably help, but I'm not sure how much. And maybe with how small the holes are (and how many there are), the air won't affect it the same way as a wiffleball? Not just for passing - when you shoot the ball, you're putting a spin on it and usually throwing it pretty far, and I just don't see how it would be able to move through the air the same way as a regular basketball, especially when it's spinning and the air is moving all around those holes. Maybe if you're just using it indoors, the air just doesn't make much of a difference... It'll be cool to see how they're able to improve it over time (assuming this was meant as a kind of prototype and not just a one-off for shits and giggles). Though I can't imagine the NBA adopting something like this any time soon when using a real ball isn't much of a hassle to begin with. Maybe someone will come up with a different game that this ball works better for.

@scrumbles10 ай бұрын
Some concerns: Reliability: How sturdy is it? Will any loss of integrity at all compromise its bounce characteristics? Aerodynamics: A lotta holes there... Can you play outside in the wind? With enough spin, will it curve it like a wiffleball? Will it lessen ball travel when passing/shooting? Sexyness: Will it get me laid?
@storm-277310 ай бұрын
1. Depending on the plastic they use it should stay fairly intact and useable, jjust like any other plastic ball 2. The reason a wiffleball curves is 1 side doesnt have holes so it creates friction. Since this has holes everywhere it wont curve. 3. Yes :)
@bloodypommelstudios714410 ай бұрын
Dunno about the durability but presumably the benefit is it'll never need pumping. The tire industry has been trying to work towards airless tires for years and they're used on the lunar roving vehicle. It 100% would destroy the aerodynamics. So I really couldn't see something like this being used professionally in it's current form.

The holes on the Wilson airless ball affect its aerodynamics by reducing air resistance, allowing it to travel faster and farther with more accuracy? This means that players will need to adjust their throwing techniques to accommodate the new dynamics of the ball. Additionally, the lack of air means that the ball maintains its shape and consistency, ensuring a more reliable performance over time. What do you think?

That idea of yours to have a hybrid of this and the standard ball is really cool. Either way, its a cool collectable and I have no doubt it will be in some collections soon, it just won't mean much to most until it hits mass production at a price closer to the standard or official NBA grade ball.

This is interesting. A second video of this new type of basketball. I saw the first video and with this one I stopped the video at 8:00 to make a comment. I'll watch the rest of the video to find out what Unbox Therapy says. From the first video, Wilson says the new ball is supposed to actually replace the traditional ball. It is supposed to have the same bounce and the same weight. I think it is really cool that they designed a ball that is airless that has those traits. But I wonder if it would effect the action as it travels through the air because those holes are exposed. Much like a wiffle ball. I don't know, who knows, but Wilson engineered the ball.

The point of this exercise is so that in a future where 3D printing is much more resource efficient, the typical basketball can be 3D printed and layers of leather/synthetics can just be glued/sewn on top of the design thus preserving the airless nature while keeping the same feel and texture of a conventional basketball
@billstenberg10 ай бұрын
I think it weighs only 610g because they ARE shooting for NBA weight AFTER paint and grip is added. Hence the Gen 1 in the label. The next one will probably weigh more once the missing stuff is added, I think. This definitely is a prototype looking model but selling it will fund the project better to "get the ball rolling". Lol

the problem with "if it aint broke" is a lot of the time, you don't know it's broke if you don't try to fix it for example, when we still used gas lighting a lot of people assumed lightheadedness, hallucinations, and headaches were just a normal fact of staying indoors, nobody realized burning gas indoors was a bad thing until we had an alternative and they started seeing a steep decline in lightheadedness, hallucinations, and headaches, and still some people cling to gas stoves and ovens because "if it aint broke" another great example is heatpumps, if it aint broke would have us never find this technology

The air flow through all those little holes is going to slow it down a lot in the air. You're going to see a LOT of three point shots fall short, at least till people get used to it.

honestly dont think it will
@Exachad10 ай бұрын
Won't it slow it down less? The air can pass right through it instead of being blocked.
@zeromemory0010 ай бұрын
it wouldnt slow it down, less wind resistance cause theres not much for the wind to resist lol. could possibly be better for shooting actually.
@AV8R_110 ай бұрын
@@Exachad That's the misconception that people who haven't studied aerodynamics sometimes have a hard time understanding. A regular basketball completely displaces the air as it flies. There is a slip-streaming effect, and only a small (ish) amount of aerodynamic resistance builds up in front of the ball as it passes through the air. In a mesh ball, the air isn't deflected. At least not at the front of the ball. Instead, it gets deflected and dispersed at each little strand of the mesh, it compresses to squeeze through the holes in the ball, it creates huge amounts of aerodynamic drag as it turbulates and makes its way into the ball. It does it again as it exits. Solid surfaces provide a continuous, unbroken form, minimizing turbulence and drag. Meshes, with their interconnected triangles, create irregular surfaces that disrupt airflow. The gaps between mesh triangles cause eddies and vortices, leading to increased resistance. Like water flowing through a filter. It still goes through it, but it slows down significantly.

I guess this ball asks the question "How can you change something iconic, but have it remain the same" if your goal was to make the ball, bounce better or be more accurate in shooting or some other improvement in performance the progress is easy to measure. The problem is that you don't want this to be significantly better than a regular basketball because then it will not be a basketball anymore. The ball manufacturers ran into the same problem with soccer balls, when the new designs that they came up with play differently than the traditional ones.
