Hi Sam, very interesting to see the Hornby one under review. Thanks for the shout out and link to my DJ Models class 71 review. Hard to choose between them I think. The loco as you observed is fascinating and they were wonderful machines to work on (not that I ever did) based on an even earlier group of electric locos with flywheels and booster equipment. One interesting point, the Southern third rail was nominal 650v DC yet at full power these locos were running on 1200 volts!! super clever stuff.

Hi Mike, glad you found that interesting - no problem, I really enjoyed your video, so hopefully others that haven't seen it yet will too! Definitely fascinating these - very glad I went for it in the end! Thanks again for the comment, Sam :)

Great review, catching up with most of your reviews, I remember how smart these locos looked in BR green pulling the Golden Arrow Pullman service out of Victoria, these were the versions without pantograph, they often appeared all over the Southern Region, being the region with the most 3rd rail in the country. Cheers Drew.

Hi Sam. I've always had only steam locos but recently decided to try something a bit different. Having watched various reviews you have done of diesel and electric locos, I was impressed with the class 71. I managed to find one at a reasonable price from Kernow Models and have to say I am very pleased with it. However, I feel the pantograph is a detail too far. It looks fine folded but is very easy to dislodge which is what I did when I turned the loco upside down to check out the underside. I spent a long time putting it all back together but after it happened for a second time, I removed the springs and glued it in the down position. Apart from this I think it is great and runs beautifully. Keep up the good work.

I've just bought the current Class 71 and like Sam I found the weight astonishing. What a fabulous loco. For the record, my one is absolutely amazing at slow speeds, so this is a faultless buy for me.
@GaryNumeroUno4 жыл бұрын
Hi mukka, the white gubbins on the bogies are indeed related to the power supply collector shoes. The 'shoes' would normally be suspended below them but due to it being a model they were obviously not fitted. (By the way, you mentioned on a couple of occasions you were running the unit in 'third rail mode'! You do not have a third rail power supply fitted! I like electric locos... I have driven them here in Oz; always good to drive and very powerful and much quieter than a diesel. I like the look of the UK electric locos... always did a bit of spotting, chasing them when I was in the UK on holiday. Stay safe and happy. Gaz

Nice model Sam, I've seen the preserved one at the NRM, and that model captures the class perfectly. Those white blocks on the boogies are indeed the current collectors for the third rail. The third rail on the Southern Region are normally on the far side of the running rails away from platforms. The Southern was always big on electrification, the LBSC started electrifying before WW1 and by the 1930's had loads of Electric suburban lines mainly in South London, but they had also extended the main line electrification to places like Brighton, Dover and Hastings. However until the late 40's its was all passenger traffic with EMUs. Bulliard designed a class of three mixed traffic electric locos at the very end on the Southern, one being delivered a few months before nationalisation and the other two after. These were the forerunners of the 71's, but were scraped in the mid 60's. The 71's didn't last much longer sadly and disappeared in the early 70's. Ten of them were converted to class 74 locos, a hybrid diesel / electric loco similar in workings to the class 73's. but these only survived a little longer and were all scrapped by 1978. Anyway, lovely model and you should run her more often. Have a chilled w/e Jon PS - if you want another very unusual and interesting electric loco Heljan (I think) do a really nice model of the Metropolitan Railway Bo-Bo loco.
@SamsTrains7 жыл бұрын
Thanks Jon! I can't recall seeing this at the NRM, but glad to hear it's a good resemblance! Thanks a lot for the info on the current collectors, and for the info on the SR and the history on electrics, much appreciated! Ooh yes I've seen that one too - I was sorely tempted by it! You have a great one too mate, Sam :)

I've liked these for a while, so I have just ordered one. I have a thing for BR blue, so I ordered a Dapol class 29 too. Last week I found three good priced used Heljan br blue locos (yes they run well) and an Heljan calss 47 in police livery. At long last I finally found a very good condition Bachmann Blue Pullman 6 car DMU. I can't wait to get it now I can use big layouts at a model railway club. I have the bug so bad I 've had to come out of early retirement and go back to work to pay for it all :)

Hi Sam you were right those white things on the sides of the bogies are shoe beams which the pick up shoes are mounted on to pick up from the third rail, even the cable connecting them is represented on the bogie. I am old enough to remember seeing these locos running on the southern . Great video as always well done . Dave

Hi Dave, thanks a lot - I should have stuck with my gut feeling on that one then! Thanks again for your comment mate, Sam :)
@garycross2284 жыл бұрын
Hi Sam, like your review. Those white things on the bogies were actually shoes for third rail pick-up. The 71s had two shoes on each side of each bogie ( 8 shoes in total which were retracted when the pantograph was used). As you quite rightly said, the pantograph was used in marshalling yards where a third rail could be fatal for shunting staff. I actually remember seeing these using the overhead at Hither Green marshalling yard when I was little.

This is one of my "grails" or engines that I want, striving for the full set of SR loco's, EMU's and coaching as I grew up with the Southern Region. I also have been in 2 71's and one 74 that was parked behind the fuel lane at Hither Green, the marshalling yards still had the overhead gantries but the wires had been taken down. It wasn't just Hither Green the 71 was found on, Tillingstone Colliery could take an overhead 71 and I seem to remember another Kent colliery could as well. I also remember in the 70's Ashford works had a couple sidings OHLE one I believe for third rail DC volts and one for another voltage as Ashford occasionally had in Tilbury units for any heavy electrical work and the sidings were for testing the pantographs.

Great looking model Sam and a great review, Its interesting that Hornby have included the option to take power from catenary! as I don't think they provide any catenary in there current UK line up. I'm sure I've read somewhere that their European line offers a modern catenary option. It would interesting to see it run from the pantograph! Ive seen Barrie Davis running these on his terrific layout and they do seem to have great performance. Until your review I had assumed the pantograph was a dummy. Its a beautiful looking pantograph. Dose it have a part number? I don't think this model would run on my old super 4 track. It would probable fall over on the points! But its very tempting! Oscar

Southern Region pipe connectors are colloquially known as the "bagpipes", they often had two sets simply because of the third rail it was very dangerous working as a shunter hence the pantograph as the Southern OHLE didn't have third rail but instead as a current for the pantograph.

One of the local private railway co. the "Floyd" has quite a few older British electrics, with a huge variety of classes (no two identical) like class 77, 87... They often go as double-headed or with a diesel backup. They use to go with the class 57s, but both crashed recently, so they go with the Romanian "Big Dacia" locos now days. People keep telling me that from all the British engine types the electrics has the biggest weird factor, and I think they're right.

back in the 50's after the war stea trains were dirty and very well used so they thought of eletric diesels they were mostly used on the main lines as it was easy to put the cables up, sadly though by the 60's and 70's diesel was around but eletric was mostly used in main towns and citys only now they use a mixture of diesel and eletric to keep the emissions down,

Ahh okay, yeah that makes sense - thanks very much for the info as always mate! Cheers, Sam :)

Honestly, I think rail passenger service will always be a thing, although its not fast a planes, most people take cars to go to places for vacation, but if it's a place you want to get to fast but you aren't time bound (which is the majority of travels), trains give you a better experience, better food (don't eat plane food, ever, just look up "plane foods and drinks" on KZbin), and better view (if you are on a plane, all you can see when you're high up is clouds). I'm only talking about the "normal" population, there are also rail fans who will gladly take rail travel for the reasons previously stated, it seems freight isn't all the rails are good for :) Also, did you get my photo? It's of a J94 with a worker on the top.

I hope you're right - it'd be a shame to see them go altogether now! Yes I think I got it - fairly sure I did actually! :D Cheers, Sam :)

about electrics not having tenders, in countries like my beloved Australia and sometimes in the US with diesel locomotives pulling freight trains for long distances, they have a tanker freight car behind the locomotive for an extra supply of fuel that has pipe connecting to the fuel tanks of the locomotive
@SamsTrains7 жыл бұрын
Ahh very cool! That sounds like a very clever idea!! Thanks for the comment, Sam :)

Wow! Great video! By there is one question. Why did the class 71 exist in 1950 when the class 70 was built in 2008? Cheers, TWA
@SamsTrains7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment! haha yeah - it's confusing - but they weren't classified chronologically, so they were all produced at different times; it's the same with diesels too! Thanks for watching, Sam :)

OMG! An electric train with a pantograph?! YAAAAS! Are you going to invest in some overhead lines so it looks realistic with the pantograph up? (Edit) I had no idea you could actually POWER any hornby loco with overhead lines to be honests. I never knew that was a feature!
@SamsTrains7 жыл бұрын
haha yes indeed! No probably not though - I just prefer having non-powered track, and also the book-case would be too low for it, lol! I know - it's so impressive really! :D All the best, Sam :)

An electric locomotive with a tender would be interesting lol, a giant battery would be in it so no need for those electricity lines or something...

there were very few electrified lines in the 50's that's why Robert Riddles was against the BR moderation plan, he wanted the standard classes to run into the 70's when BR and the government had money to electrify all rail lines
@SamsTrains7 жыл бұрын
Ahh okay, so he had more long term plans for his standards then - shame all that changed! Thanks for the info, Sam :)

Hornby have made only 2 liverys, the br blue and br green I think they do more than one as they give them different numbers and how big the yellow ends are to the whole front to a little panel to a blue or green front I added the detail to my mpv but they have given me little ladder to put on the buffers but only gave me 2 so one end doesn't have the ladders, not the best looking loco but like you said in 1950s that would of been the future :) hmm I think your older electric units have a problem haha I didn't know electrics screamed with a engine noice haha haha yes indeed goodness sake I seen mr bullman
