I'm getting less and less enamoured of highly detailed locos. They often have parts that are fragile and break off even before opening their package. I'd much prefer more internal detail and less breakable detail. And functional reliability. Nice running session... she's a beauty.

I do have a soft spot for Lima models. Solid and pretty bombproof

I agree - they are lovely when they're built to last - but that isn't all that common these days :/ Thanks a lot for the comment mate, Sam :)

Back in day, here in Australia, the Lima range was budget priced. It got many Aussies started into building model railways. I still have a lot of Lima stuff and it still runs just fine.

Yeah definitely - always great value models from Lima - I still enjoy most of mine too! :D Thanks for watching - Sam :)

Managed to pick one of these up for 19.00 last year converted to DCC and it is excellent. The only awkward thing is getting the body off as you have to remove the buffers. Excellent review once again Sam.

The GWR railcar was occasionally assigned to pulling one or two MK1 coaches but mostly on their and the design was a later version

The end always reminds me of a Dragon Rapide which was a small airliner of about the same time 1930s. So very streamlined for its time when streamlining was all the rage. This is a later version, the first ones are as modelled by Dapol and are a bit more rounded , whereas this one has more angular lines . A nice little model
@SamsTrains6 жыл бұрын
Ooh really? I'll have to look those up! Ahh okay - so those were the bananas then! Thanks for the info, Sam :)

A great review, I love these quirky railcars and when first introduced in 1933 they were quite sleek for the time and were know to pull a single coach at times also. I've just bought one of these in BR green but not run it yet so I'm hoping for a smooth runner like yours.

I have a maroon parcels version of the railcar. Its in storage presently until house is fixed up . Looking forward to running it again, but it does have an occasional annoying squeak! I bought it new in the early 1980's.

Hey Sam great review, I've had mine in excess of 25 years now, still goes very well. Ref it pulling anything no. 22 worked the Newbury to Lambourn branch and was fitted to pull a horsebox. The real no. 22 can be seen at Didcot Railway Centre. Regards Terry.

Don't mind a GWR Diesel Railcar. I don't know if this thing might have hauled something in its lifetime. But one Diesel Railcar named Daisy, from Thomas & Friends, was very lazy and stubborn at first. She kept leaving the Tidmouth Milk Tank behind, which caused confusion and delay. In the story of Percy's Predicament, after Percy wound up perched on a goods wagon through trouble with trucks, Sir Topham Hatt spoke severely to both him and Daisy. Daisy learned her lesson and behaved better. It's a pity no Hornby or Bachmann Model of Daisy exists in this present day. Maybe you could find out why. However, nice to see the GWR 2-6-0 Mogul Tender Engine with a goods train. I have the exact same model, whose real-life counterpart resides at the Didcot Railway Centre. My model is just as good a runner as she is with pulling power. A side-windowed cab version resides on the SVR and West Somerset Railway respectively. The WSR Mogul was actually a Prairie Tank Engine to begin with, yet she looks nicer, I think, as a GWR Tender Engine. Is the GWR Mogul a favourite steam engine of yours? I'm curious.

Thanks a lot Kelly, and ahh yeah, who could forget Daisy?? Thanks for watching - Sam :)

Three years on and still a very useful review - - after I had made my purchase today of No. 22, thank you. Yes you have definitely confirmed the value for money, great internal detail and the two colours for seats and compartmentalisation is extra value add. Its an interesting piece to add and at well under £40 is far better than paying £150/ £160 on todays new - its seems to be a square law on extra detail versus price!! I shall remove the D couplings and add some unused over detail off other new models (just for fun on just this one), fit a few passengers saving myself over £120. Agree with many comments below that todays models have far too many fiddly parts that break off too easily - manufactures seem to be going too far now. These tend to be obscure items which the manufacturers have to tell you what they are and where to fit - even then they can get it wrong as happened on my Heljan 1509! Stephen

I just love the Flying Bananas and have two of the Lima versions, No22 and the Express Parcels model. Other Lima locos I have is GWR King George V and a GWR 2-6-0 small Prairie. They may all be old, locos, but they are all very reliable and perform well at all speeds. Good review on this model. I also have a Hornby version of this Railcar, but it doesn't run as smooth as the Lima model

Lima locos are very good depending on how hard you look at swap meets and exhibitions. I honestly don't care about very tiny details and Lima has just enough for me. Recently picked up a very nice class 73 "Post Haste" in Intercity with new traction tyres as well as being serviced, for only £25. The nickname of the 'flying banana" came from its original streamlined casing, the Lima model is based on the later un-streamlined models, the Dapol model has the original streamlining. I might try and tack one of these down for my new micro layout but I won't be looking forward to DCC fitting one! Nice video, keep up what your doing

No Sam, the bogies are the same, its just fliped. There are also expensive, and rare Lima locos out there like the V300, or the CC 14000 class, some locos only available in Lima, do to no other manufacturer has/had them. And I'm open to cheap locos too. I call them the "expendables". They are good for smaller shows, like Xmas, Children's day... where u need to run something reliable, unassuming, and modest model, do to the "visitors/audience" are mostly children, and family (not expert modelers).

Hey Sam, nice review. Did you get the photo I emailed you for the wall of fame? It was a green 7 1/4 gauge Narrow gauge locomotive with a wreath with santa on the smoke box taken at echills wood railway I told you about ( we're still not open so I'll tell you when we do open)

oh my im very late, so I will take my prize for being last ;), I love buying old lima as there all ways so cheap, make the hobby a lot better :) and if you want to try a cheap repaint then a lima loco is great :) its special because (I think) its the first diesel off 2018 on the channel haha, I have the reason the warship was the odd one out, it was the only one that was in a red colour and it didn't as im aware have a GWR badge, im surprised mr bullman didn't detail :), I think someone should come and snap the axle to his wagon then he wont be showing up anymore haha
@SamsTrains6 жыл бұрын
haha that's okay mate - I appreciate you watching at all! Yeah for sure - you cant beat a good old Lima model! Ooh that's good reasoning - though technically it's still Western region! hehe I could never do that to him ;D Thanks for watching, Sam :)

Hi sam. I was watching one of your older clips. It was the track cleaning one. I plan to look out for one in the future. At moment i have an old yellow coach track cleaner but has no pads. I was wondering what speed you would run one at and how you would clean track ends and inside loco sheds. Thanks
@SamsTrains6 жыл бұрын
Hi John, thanks a lot for the comment - those track cleaning wagons are not something I personally use, but I'd run them at a moderate speed, and give them several laps. The best option for me is the use the peco track rubber - it just does the job so much better than any other method I've tried! Thanks for watching, Sam :)

This as viewed after the Dapol review. You kind of trounced the Dapol for being three times the price but not much detail. This one got only a two on the detail, whilst it sported a better cab. Slow speed and mechanism was quite decent, but still got low marks. Overall, your usual strong analysis, but I think you gave the boys at Lima a pretty heavy drubbing. One thing I’d really like to hear about, in your critiques, is whether the drive gear is likely to split. This has been an enormous problem for model trains out of China and must be a terrible headache for manufacturers that invest so much, only to have a foreign producer, over which they have virtually no leverage, muck it up with shoddy practices. I’d pay extra for a brass gear set. I’d pay extra to see Made in Britain staring back at me.
@SamsTrains3 жыл бұрын
No, I'd stand by my marks really. The Dapol version was still miles ahead of this one; the detail here is much coarser, it has a much more plasticy finish, and the performance doesn't even come close (despite being reasonably good for the age!) Agreed on brass gears - they always make a big difference! Merry Christmas - Sam :)
