Unboxing Videos are a Waste of Your Time: How GW Squanders Limitless Free Media.

Warhammer Age Of Sigmar Third Edition is here, and so are the AOS 3.0 Dominion unboxing videos! Unfortunately, I don’t enjoy watching unboxing videos OR making them.
The reason we seem to get a zillion unboxing videos with every Warhammer release is a natural consequence of the way that GW interfaces with content creators. Games Workshop has established a system that causes otherwise-creative youtubers to make… unboxing videos. What a waste- let’s change it!
A lot of creators who I admire make unboxing videos, and they try their best... but a brighter future exists where they are able to post alternative videos on review day that are creative and inspiring and FUN! I want to see those snazzy new models get painted! :-) We just need to convince Games Workshop to make some very simple and logical changes to the way that they... well... I mean... I guess it's ok to dream! :-)

Hey games workshop, i hope you read these comments. Here's the thing - We're big fanboys. We love your minis, the world you have and everything that comes with it. But there's no other company in the world that don't care as little about the youtubers making videos that gives them hundreds of thousands in revenue and new customers every year as you do. None of us are asking much, but maybe a way to openly communicate with you, maybe help with information when ever we're making fun video projects... OR how about actually getting the releases you say you're gonna send in reasonable time, so when we schedule for them - set time aside to make content for free that takes 60 hours to make - we actually can. Thats all. We love you - get your sheitz together.

There's plenty to agree with here but at the same time, part of watching KZbin creators is seeing what they can make with the same access as a normal modeller. If KZbinrs are given too much it ceases to speak to the everyman that watches the content. That said, a little extra time for completing reviews would be good.

You know what miniature companies see the value of creative content creators? Literally all of them besides Games Workshop. Just about any other company will do whatever is in their means to help get good content out there and many of the smaller companies will go above and beyond. GW has great products but as a company they totally suck! Not as much as AK Interactive sucks, but they're definitely 2nd on the list. Hire good PR Games Workshop or let the current one do their job! Or just quit being so weird about stuff, why you gotta be so weird?

GW can only coast on their tagline of "we aren't as bad as we used to be" for so long. I wanted to see some really superb work that I know Goobertown is fully capable of and with the 48 hours given they basically got some grey plastic cat toys and an editorial on their broken system.

Exactly, it always feels so click baity and that's at no fault of the YTers that get these early copies, its like GW are forcing the click baity titles and videos every release by shortening these shitty time frames for the NDA. it's ridiculous, imagine how immersed in the hobby new comers would be if painters ACTUALLY had the time to produce conversions, paintjobs, sub assembly videos as its released. Worth noting that Ash used to work at GW in a middle management position. Probably knows people that get him a box even earlier, or genuine PR people.

He doesn't get the box earlier no, which is clear from his social media. The only thing he gets from having worked at GW is the fact they had those crazy painting deadlines all the time so he has become very good at speedpainting and planning. You see this across all of his projects too, not only GW stuff. In this particular case you see it by the fact that he "only" painted the Stormcasts - because 21 models is totally doable to finish in ~24 hours leaving enough time to play and record a game with minimal editing. He knows exactly which corners to cut making him very efficient. I know other people who've worked at GW too, and they share this mentality as well - maybe that's part of the problem of why content creators get so little time.

I'm glad that everything from the back of the box was in the box. I was worried that if I purchased this box some of the things from the back of the box wouldn't be in the box, but having watched you show me that all of the things that are on the back of your box were in fact in your box, it makes me feel comfortable that, were I to order my own box, then all the things on the back of that box would be in that box too.

@Epic indeed, one of my greatest concerns is that the things from the back of the box might not be in the box, even though the things from the back of the box in the video are in the box in the video. Perhaps GW made special effort to ensure that the things from the back of the box were in the box in the review box, but won't put the same concern into whether or not the things from the back of the box are in the boxes that they send out to consumers. I guess sometimes you just have to trust that the things from the back of box will be in the box, and hope that if the things from the back of the box are not in fact in the box then they will send you a replacement box where all the things from the back of the box are in fact in the box.

One other point: Not giving enough time for a full, proper review is kinda the point. If the product isn't very good, the last thing product creators want is for people to tell their customers that on release day. On the other hand, a quick first impression from a youtuber who wants to avoid offending them in the hope they'll continue to get free review copies in future, that's another story.

Absolutely spot on Brent, you've summed up why I have zero interest in a Games Workshop NDA right now. For anyone who isn't a full time youtuber your chances of being able to get something of any sort of value out in the time frame required are minimal. When the first ever plastic space marine figures were released, back in the dim and distant past of the late eighties, while KZbin wasn't quite a thing GW ran an article showing all the weird things people at their studio had done with the figures. Including, if memory serves, not just weird weapon conversions and one-off character conversions and banner-bearers and a variety of paint jobs from expert to ordinary, but space marine daleks, space marines on Judge Dredd bikes, space marines with cocktail-stick spiked shoulder-pads, space marines with model-plane-propeller jump-packs... Obviously at one point they understood how much this kind of inspiration drives people to want to buy and model and paint and game with their figures.

I'm going to be completely honest, Brent, I'm no longer on the hype train, I just watched because I enjoy your delivery. The Cursed City debacle was the death knell for me regarding GW - not being able to get it was a real bitter pill to swallow. Blackstone Fortress was what got me back into the hobby after near 10 years away, but I've discovered offerings of late from indie companies, and mini-agnostic games that I've really enjoyed. But it's just 75 parts styrene monomer(stabilized), 100 parts polystyrene dissolved in the monomer, and a photoinitator. It's super simple. If I was a chemist myself I'd get the materials and actually test it out, but I'm just a poor dude who wants it to work.

Imagine on "Review day" you have speed painting, dry brushing, competition winning, conversions, different paint schemes all coming from the countless channels that release that sort of content. You would be spoilt for choice and seeing your favourite creators making videos with their style and their take on the miniature would only hype the box even more.

I loved this video Brent! As well as all the others obviously, but this one was special to me. Personally I love unboxing videos, both watching and filming them and I share your thoughts about this topic but I would also add the fact that most of the unboxing and review videos on KZbin are focused on Games Workshop products only and that's a little bit sad to me, because there are tons of different amazing small companies out there that are completely neglected. Of course I'm not saying that we should stop making videos on GW products, but I think that at least we should make some space for the other companies too sometimes. I'm trying to do this with my channel, even though I'm incredibly small and almost irrelevant, but maybe someone watching my videos will discover some new miniatures and games and will help these small companies grow. Anyway, this comment is getting too long! Keep making inspiring videos like this!

I found this video after watching Miniac's podcast and man the stuff you said is so truthful. I'm done watching unboxing crap since it's all the same, 50 channels all doing the same thing. It's like when people buy a bunch of boxes of stuff and post a 'look at what I got' picture on reddit/facebook, no one actually cares, if you're gonna show us something, let it be painted miniatures and not some boxes that are gonna rot in your closet for a while

Agreed! The thing is, all 50 of those people are creative folks, and literally ALL of their normal videos are better than the box opening videos. GW somehow sets up a situation where awesome people are making rushed videos on exactly the same topic. There's gotta be a better way! We all want better content!

Seems like you got all the youtubers to Agree with you. All you have to do now is setup a youtuber collective (kuchkuchunionkuchkuch) and work with GW as a collective. Worst case they won't sent you free stuff anymore, so you will have to buy what you would otherwise buy anyways. Best case scenario GW will actually listen to all of you and you get a fair deal.

I definitely agree with you. I love seeing one or two unboxings, especially because I have limited storage space, so knowing the dimensions of the box and how everything is stacked in it and how much I can do with assembling some and still having other things on the sprue is actually quite useful. But what I love to see more are painted miniatures and some people explaining the rules in detail. Not even battle reports, but just a step by step visual of the rules and some army explanations to go with what's in the box. I recently got into Necromunda and those things really helped me decide on a few things. I don't easily learn from the book itself, so watching someone explain the rules (especially with focus on what to pay attention to or what has changed) is often much more useful. But I totally understand that that's hard with just 2 days of 'review' time.

Feel the same, I've only bothered to watch yours and Uncle Atoms videos, if you guys had more time the content would be more entertaining when I first worked for GW , '95-2000, we got new releases weeks before release, they had to be built and painted so they could be in the cabinet before the shop opened on the Saturday morning they came out. I went back to my old store, now a one man store, a few yrs ago as a part time/relief worker, that had all gone, understandably. Frankly I'm amazed the manager gets anything in the cabinets these days

Goobertown going for the throat, as always. The cynic in me assumes GW cynically thinks that more time to put together a proper review is more time the reviewer has to talk about flaws in the product. That they keep the time so short to force content creators to put together unboxing videos, which serve the actual purpose GW has for sending review copies: getting KZbin channels to post videos mentioning the _existence_ of the product that will reach the eyes of all their subscribers. The more charitable part of me just assumes GW are incompetent and apathetic about how they could be improving. They've posted record profits, and everyone is talking about their products. Why should they change?

Unboxing videos of miniatures are a diffrent beast than most other unboxings because their is not a lot to show in comparision to a collectorsbox of videogames, movies or highquality statues etc.
