Hi Brent. Thank you for taking the time to make this video, we are pleased that you liked the paints overall 😊 To answer some of your critiques, we will be adding more colours to the range such as greens, turquoise, brighter colours etc. We were only limited to 60 paints, so we went for the ones we use the most. As for the darker skin tones, we will most definitely be having this in the second wave (which we are currently finalizing now). Anyway, overall, we are glad you enjoyed using them 😊 Cheers, Dunc and Rog

On the naming - it's done so that the colours can be copyrighted/trade marked. GW realised back in the day that they couldn't stop other companies creating an "Ultramarine Blue" or "Scab Red" because they are common descriptive terms. They went through "The grand renaming" and out come "Caledor Sky (tm)" or "Khorne Red (tm)". Including names from their IP means that other companies cannot release a colour of the same name (in a better bottle, for a lower price, with a better consistency) and nonsense names can be copyrighted as unique. Since then most other paint companies that cater to hobbyists do the same. It's the big firms catering to artists like Liquitex or Winsor and Newton that are happy to sell a tube of "Burnt Umber" and stand based on quality. Definitely easier to reason about than "Rhinox Hide (tm)" or "Dirty Leather".
@darkowl92 жыл бұрын
It's a bit of a different context with traditional art supplies though right, as they're generally also going to tell you the pigment composition of the colour you're buying. Something like Khimera Colours might be a bit more sensible with this. But once you start going "pure (or few mixed) pigment" you also get into the whole "you need your recipes" territory...
@captainparty2 жыл бұрын
I think with a lot of other companies (including these) have names that are similar to the GW names either the current or the older range, so your Sorcerers Cloak is Warlock Purple, Berzerker and Sanguine reds are Khorne and Mephiston etc

This isn't quite right since Copyright has literally nothing to do with names. You correctly mention trademarks early on, but then you keept mistakingly using the term copyright after that. If you want be informative you really shouldn't be conveying objectively incorrect details like that. It gices what you're saying zero credibility, since the whole "copyright has zero relevance to names" is IP 101. As for the rest, you are somewhat correct? But reading it makes me think you have very little to know actual knowledge of how trademarks work. Trademarks are all about preventing consumer confusion, so typically the more unique you can get naming something, the better off you are. The thing with trademarks though, especially with products to be sold rather than iconography, business names, etc. Is that it is very context friendly, as in you can have things with the same name doing similarish things, as long as you can say consumers wouldn't really be confused. In this case I think you're inserting assumptions into what is a relatively straightforward situation. GW didn't change the paint names because of a sudden need to change Ultramarine blue or something. But because they literally made new paints at that time. They had some similar colours, but the formulas did change enough to warrant new names for the new colors. Looking at the context of the name change it trademarking it to be more Warhammer specific might have been a small motivation for it, but not really a main one. Those kind of name changed happen all the time in the general paint industry.

That Dark Angel statue you two took a picture with @ 6:50 is probably the largest "conversion" I can take credit for. Back in about 2004, myself and the other GW employees from the former "Bunker" Store in Westminster CA, converted and repainted it as a Dark Angel. It started off as one of several fiber-glass Blood Angel statues that were issued to stores to draw in curious shoppers. Originally it had a blood drop flanked with wings in the center of its chest. We cut away the blood drop and replaced it with a sword to better match DA iconography. Others did most of the repainting, but I carved that sword with aquilla guard from a piece of balsa wood that we then covered with several coats of resin, and then re-glassed the rest of the drop shaped hole in it's chest. It's good to see it still kicking around, I hadn't seen it since it's reallocation when the LA Bunker was downsized.

An Interesting review, I'm always looking at new paint, and this is a good review. Good to see the positive and negative of these. The colors of the standards look good, and the washes look like they would work better as a speedpaint (which is a good thing if you ask me) and I'm always interested in new mettalics as I've never found one that is quite right for me. Like, they all seem to have their issues that makes me dislike them in general. What would you say are the colors you liked working with best? Like, how did yellow and orange go on? I know those tend to be troublesome. How was blue? Any colors seem to fall to the typical issues?
@GoobertownHobbies2 жыл бұрын
yep, yellow and orange required an extra layer compared to other colors, as expected. Still, the yellows and oranges were pretty dang good! I'd say nothing surprised me between the various colors, and they were all above average compared to other paint lines I've worked with.

Also, light, medium, dark connoted where it falls in the triad.

Yes, this! They look a lot like Secret Weapon washes as well, which are excellent and last forever because they're so concentrated. I used to go through multiple bottles of nuln oil a year, and I paint heroic D&D minis, not vast armies! I finally made the switch and I'm not even 20% through my bottles of SW washes after 2 years. It's just some advice or observation from newbie point of view to you, painter master :) I saw that on your zenithal miniatures, there is maybe lack of smoothness and the white spots are very visible or make the texture like as rugosity. I had the same but after some research I found the next formula: 4/6 of white ink (Liquitex), 1/6 Glaze Medium (Vallejo) and 1/6 Gloss varnish (Vallejo). The varnish I use it to delay the dry time plus create more contrast for SpeedPaint paints. Really don't get me wrong, I even don't know if you are satisfied with that zenithal texture, but I feel you enjoy experimenting as me. Feel free to improve that formula or even ignore my comment. I just felt the need to help you a bit, as you already helped me a lot. Warm regards, Aitor
@GoobertownHobbies2 жыл бұрын
Hey Aitor! Casey did the priming on these minis, no offense taken at all!! ;-) I've found white ink at 30 PSI with a very light trigger finger works pretty well. Interesting formula you have there, I may give it a try one of these days! When we're working with ~ opaque paints the zenithal highlight is really just to help the camera focus a bit better, but when we use more transparent paints the undercoat can be really important, so thanks for the idea!!! :-)

@@Kahtini despite there already being non Caucasian skin tones represented in the set, just not labled as skin. Caucasian skin tone colors are not often found elsewhere, whereas brown browns and sienna skin tones are found everywhere in wood, dirt, etc. It makes sense to separate them out. Especially since Caucasian tones are hard to mix, and by contrast it's really easy to mix colors and end with brown.
@Kahtini2 жыл бұрын
@@solisglacies3183 Caucasian skin tones are (for me) easy to mix. But then I think I'll blame that on the art schooling I've had. Non Caucasian deserve to be represented in labeling, just as Caucasians are.

Hi Brent, I just saw your epoxy video I do need a chemistry lesson from you. I have some old green stuff that I found 5+yrs old. What chemical changes can I do to it to make it soft and pliable again so that I can blend the green and blue epoxy's together like new? (chopping out the middle again of course) There must be something I can do? Microwave/warm it? soak in water? Add acetone or alcohol or something? Can you tell me what the right thing to do is to reverse it's aging process so that I can use actually it.. don't want to waste it as I have a lot

If you feel the palette is limited, also consider Kimera paints. Maybe they are made for mixing your own colors. I honestly think that mixing your own colors will make you a better painter in time, so Paint Bravely!

The naming sucks for colorblind painters like me, hard to tell what some colors are. I've not been able to find a paint brand that just uses standard names for colors to not confuse or trip up people that have a hard time processing colors. Was hopeful for this one but may pick up some.

Have you had a chance to review Army Painter's Skin Tones set yet?
@GoobertownHobbies2 жыл бұрын
I used them in one of my videos a while back (the one with my 3d printed face paddling a ~viking canoe). I love the range of colors in that set.... and they feel a lot like army painter warpaints. Personally I've drifted away from the warpaints line, but if you like the feel of army painter paints then that skintone set is great!

@@GoobertownHobbies Thanks, I'll go look for it. Some of my Stargate characters (namely, Abydonians) have an olive-skinned complexion and I've been looking for something that would pull that together. I'd like to know how well the coverage is for the more 'problematic' colours (ie, orange, yellow, light skin colours etc).
@GoobertownHobbies2 жыл бұрын
It's what you'd expect for those colors, but on the better side of things. The yellow paint requires an extra layer, but it's smoother than a lot of the other stuff on the market. The orange hair on the gnome sniper was only ~1.5 coats, so really not bad!

@@GoobertownHobbies I knew I was going to just get 1/3 of them, so it was the more sensible choice for me, BUT, if I didn't already have so many other paints, the highlight colors would've been my choice for another 1/3 because I've always had a harder time going brighter...like my personality. ;-/ lol
