Hi Brent. Thank you for taking the time to make this video, we are pleased that you liked the paints overall 😊 To answer some of your critiques, we will be adding more colours to the range such as greens, turquoise, brighter colours etc. We were only limited to 60 paints, so we went for the ones we use the most. As for the darker skin tones, we will most definitely be having this in the second wave (which we are currently finalizing now). Anyway, overall, we are glad you enjoyed using them 😊 Cheers, Dunc and Rog

That Dark Angel statue you two took a picture with @ 6:50 is probably the largest "conversion" I can take credit for. Back in about 2004, myself and the other GW employees from the former "Bunker" Store in Westminster CA, converted and repainted it as a Dark Angel. It started off as one of several fiber-glass Blood Angel statues that were issued to stores to draw in curious shoppers. Originally it had a blood drop flanked with wings in the center of its chest. We cut away the blood drop and replaced it with a sword to better match DA iconography. Others did most of the repainting, but I carved that sword with aquilla guard from a piece of balsa wood that we then covered with several coats of resin, and then re-glassed the rest of the drop shaped hole in it's chest. It's good to see it still kicking around, I hadn't seen it since it's reallocation when the LA Bunker was downsized.

Okay now strip the minis with simple green . Do they rubb off? Torture test . Ice . Sun . Heat . Chemical make up of them . What are they compared too ? Swatch test comparision. Etc etc . How do they taste? Are they toxic . Dry times . Matte? He ball in the bottle glass or steele? How many and what size is the ball? What happens when you add additives? Add ink? Can you mix it with other paints . They should be called triad paints . Can you thin them with medium? Can you make a wash from them. I expect something good from these paints since they are made by a miniature painter for miniature painters .

Yes, this! They look a lot like Secret Weapon washes as well, which are excellent and last forever because they're so concentrated. I hate that GW has convinced the painting community that washes are only meant to be used straight out of the bottle and anything else isn't appropriate as a wash. I used to go through multiple bottles of nuln oil a year, and I paint heroic D&D minis, not vast armies! I finally made the switch and I'm not even 20% through my bottles of SW washes after 2 years. I don't think I'm even 5% through my Vallejo sepia, that stuff is witchcraft!

Hi Brent! Love the passion you share on your content! Just one thing, I am totally noob on the hobby, so don't take this as I nothing is not. It's just some advice or observation from newbie point of view to you, painter master :) I saw that on your zenithal miniatures, there is maybe lack of smoothness and the white spots are very visible or make the texture like as rugosity. I had the same but after some research I found the next formula: 4/6 of white ink (Liquitex), 1/6 Glaze Medium (Vallejo) and 1/6 Gloss varnish (Vallejo). The varnish I use it to delay the dry time plus create more contrast for SpeedPaint paints. Really don't get me wrong, I even don't know if you are satisfied with that zenithal texture, but I feel you enjoy experimenting as me. Feel free to improve that formula or even ignore my comment. I just felt the need to help you a bit, as you already helped me a lot. Warm regards, Aitor
@GoobertownHobbies
@GoobertownHobbies 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Aitor! Casey did the priming on these minis, no offense taken at all!! ;-) I've found white ink at 30 PSI with a very light trigger finger works pretty well. Interesting formula you have there, I may give it a try one of these days! When we're working with ~ opaque paints the zenithal highlight is really just to help the camera focus a bit better, but when we use more transparent paints the undercoat can be really important, so thanks for the idea!!! :-)

I'm glad they have numbers, hope they get more vibrant triads and more technicals. Duncan is a huge name and got me back into gaming and painting with his Sigmar tutorials when I was really down. Can't wait for my own set of these paints to come in and I hope they are really good so we can see a second wave of shades and technicals get released. I felt as some did that the first wave had far too many dark and muted colors that some triads could either be done away with or simply broken down into 2 shades and more brighter colors inserted to balance it out. Certainly just looking at the palette it just felt like it was missing 3-4 triads that could be there, but that's why we have mixing and blending. I'm sure I'm like some out there that have put off a TON of painting and have built up quite a back log pile waiting for these paints. 🤗🤗🤗🤗

I think Army Painter's recent skin tone line make them the industry standard now in terms of naming system (designed in consultation with gamers of colour). It is frustrating that hobby paint lines don't publish pigment information, but you can make educated guesses: no expensive pigments at all, no cobalts or cadmiums, and exclusively using very high chroma synthetic organic pigments such as quinacridones (that go further because they can be thinned down a lot) or earth pigments like iron oxides.

Personally I've drifted away from the warpaints line, but if you like the feel of army painter paints then that skintone set is great!

@@ZobRombie13 Except for Kimera hobby brands (e.g. Citadel, Vallejo etc.) don't show what pigments they put in their paints. The idea being that keeping it a secret helps with other brands not copying their formulas (maybe some others reasons as well like people complaining when they switch pigments and the color changing slightly). Makes some sense until you see that all artist brands (Golden, Liquitex etc.) do state what pigments were used to create the paint. As a user I really like to know what is in my paints. That way I can predict what will happen if I mix them together. The less pigments used, the easier the paints is too mix. Citadel is famous for using several pigments in their paints, which can make the mixes more grey or brown than you would like to. There are other reasons why it could be beneficial for us but I will leave that for another time.

Great review, appreciate you going through all the details. On the skin tones, yeah, that's frustrating, especially considering Army Painter did that big set both to cover a huge range of tones and make it easier for people to do. Hoping that and the other missing colors you mentioned are coming soon, but considering Duncan and who he was, that the line does lots of good 40k stuff and space Marines makes sense. Curious about those washes and metallic paints, so hope you look into them more, but despite feeling like you pointed out a lot of problems, this review makes me more interested in the line than before by a lot. My FLGS is really new, so they don't have a lot of paints yet, but I would be happy to see these there. Also, as a fellow New Englander, I can now only hear Duncan as Dunkin'. But it's ok, because hobbyists run on Duncan. It's probably copyright infringement to use that tag line or something, but I propose that's our unofficial slogan for our unofficial name.

I'm definitely more interested in these now that I've tried them. A lot of my criticisms were just wanting more colors :-) As for the skin tones, yeah I think TAP and reaper are the companies that have done the most so far, I think it's worthwhile to pressure the other paint companies to look into more complete and intuitive skin ranges too!

Thank you for the review of these paints. The paint line needs a better name, and I wish they would just label the paints so we have some idea what colours we are dealing with. I find looking at swatches online often misleads me as to what the bottle will actually contain upon arrival.

In fantasy, any colour can be flesh. Most "flesh" colours can be added to brown, black, purple, green an red amongst others to provide a lighter variation. I highlight black with pink or flesh. Call it flesh highlight instead of flesh.

Backed this up in Kickstarter but didn't go crazy with it. Just got something like 15 colours. Only one of which was metallic because let's face it, they're probably not gonna compete with Vallejo metal colour range because almost nothing does. However I am interested to see how the range fares when compared to proacryl because I kinda wanna break out of my current mold of using just ProAcryl and Kimera Kolors but haven't found anything that's about as good without being just stupid expensive like some heavy body acrylics.

As someone who paints resin 3D printed figures but does not really board game, I agree that it's always a little bit annoying when paints are named after fantasy elements. When paint makers do this, it makes it feel a bit like they're pigeonholing their products into only being usable specifically for gaming minis, when in actuality you can use these kinds of paints for a variety of things like action figures, static figures, resin statues, etc. (the kind of work I do). I think more mini paint makers should take the "risk" of opening up the naming of their paint lines to be more general purpose and inviting. Pro Acryl is a good example, most (if not all) of their colors are named in an appropriate way that you can identify it.
@GoobertownHobbies

Oh absolutely, I like the names on pro acryl paints - more companies should do that ! :-)
