UPDATE: As of 2023, the UNC CS program is now requiring students to apply to get into the undergraduate major (I like this). This will make classes smaller and registration easier (hopefully)! cs.unc.edu/undergraduate/cs-admissions/

Thanks a lot for making this, it was really helpful. What would my experience be like as someone coming in with very little CS knowledge? How much do most students self-teach outside of class to fill in gaps / be competitive?
@bryan_truong3 жыл бұрын
I had no CS knowledge prior to college (as I mentioned, I was considering studying business) and my hs didn’t offer any cs courses. I think you’ll be fine! Most students don’t really self-teach other than some occasionally doing some personal projects. It is the students responsibility (if they have the discipline to, which I didn’t) to study for interview prep, though, since programming and algorithms aren’t super strongly reinforced through the curriculum

Thank-you for sharing your undergrad. experience, Bryan. 🙂 What was your favorite class? Hardest class?
@bryan_truong3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Travis, my favorite class was COMP116, which was my first CS Course- scientific programming in Python, as you learn how to process data in CSV's and visualize the data using matplotlib! The hardest class for me was probably computer organization
@TravisGarnett3 жыл бұрын
You're welcome!! My favorite was Artificial Intelligence...even got to watch the original Blade Runner, at the end of the semester. Hardest class was definitely Compiler Theory.

crazy - i took my masters in 1991 *before * the undergrad program was established there were about 100 grad students then

it's college hunting season, and, as i struggle to figure out what schools to apply to, this video helped a lot! i plan on watching your other videos, but would you say that it's difficult to get into the courses you want to? thanks sm for this!
@bryan_truong Жыл бұрын
Hey sorry for the late reply! It isn't super difficult, but UNC CS is now a major that you have to get admitted to. Once you are in, I imagine that it is easier to get classes that you want than in my experience!

Just out of curiosity, would you ever recommend a boot camp? If the boot camp has good credentials and alumni getting into good tech companies. What are your thoughts?
@bryan_truong3 жыл бұрын
I certainly don’t have any personal experience with a boot camp, but I have heard of people who have done them and gotten jobs. I do think that the boot camps only really allow for people to become front end/web developers, for the most part. Of course, there are exceptions to every rule, but it seems like most of the boot camps produce front end web developers. I guess you could transition from there though once you get some sort of cs work experience if you want to move into other roles though!
@bryan_truong3 жыл бұрын
I think it’s a great option if you want to be a front end developer!

Difficult enough to warrant a valid effort, but easy enough to have a great college experience

how early does one have to start the bs in order to graduate on time?
@bryan_truong3 жыл бұрын
I'd say that you need to start it by your first semester of Sophomore year at the latest if you are switching from a completely unrelated major/minor. However, if you start out with a similar major (such as BME, Math or Stats), and you switch into the BS for Computer Science, you may already have a lot of the prerequisites, so it pretty much depends on what you already have under your belt! Plus, you can always take classes over the summer semesters too, so it's hard to put an exact timeline on it
@noplanathemoment3 жыл бұрын
@@bryan_truong Will getting the ba put me at a major disadvantage compared to the bs? UNC is having a major overcrowding issue and I might have to go for ba.

Iam trying to decide between UNC and NYU. Other than money thing, do you think it is worth for me to come to UNC ? I am from NJ and have done very high level competitive math. Do you think i will fit in there ? They invited me to honors carolina, not sure it will add any value other than different dorm. Please let me know your perspective.
@bryan_truong4 ай бұрын
I wasn’t an honors student, to preface, but I don’t think it makes a big difference. In fact you might prefer hanging out and living with non-honors students in other dorms. Plus most students move off campus by sophomore year. I didn’t look into NYU, but I’m happy with my education at UNC and my outcome (you can check out my newer vids to see what I’m up to). I think the biggest thing is if you want to get the experience of a college town vs. urban living. You will likely have good career opportunities either way

Hi there! I currently attend UNC Charlotte, but I want to transfer to UNC-Chapel Hill for my sophomore year. I want to get a BA in CS at UNC, but the inflation of students and the "bottleneck" courses really makes me wonder if I have a good shot at getting in. I tried to get in my freshman year as an out-of-state student, but I was rejected. This year though, I am an in-state student, which I hope will help me out, but I feel like they are trying to downsize the major so I am not sure how high my chance of being accepted is! Do you have any insight on this?
@bryan_truong2 жыл бұрын
Hey Sunny, I don't have much insight at all, unfortunately, since I wasn't a transfer. I wouldn't think that your declared major necessarily affects your chances of getting accepted, since CS isn't a major that you have to apply to get into. But again, that's just my guess. I definitely know that in-state transfers have a much higher chance of getting into UNC than out of state applicants, but I don't know anything about if/how your declared major plays a role

Jesus is King! If you do not know Jesus as Savior please pray, “ Jesus save me. At this moment I choose to have faith that You gave Your life for me and rose from the dead. Doing this You defeated death, even though it meant You had to die. You surrendered Your life for me, so I chose to surrender my life to You. Forgive me Jesus, my God. Amen.” Jesus loves you so much. Please accept His love. I encourage you to read the Bible and pray. “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only begotten only Son into this world, that whoever believes that in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” John 3:16 🙏❤️🙏 Jesus is enough! Again I tell you, Jesus loves you!
