I hate how people attribute them sweeping the A’s with them being rusty. The team hadn’t even seen the postseason since 1987, and the cardinals were there almost every year. The Tigers were the more talented team by a long shot, but they lacked experience in the fall classic which is why they lost. Too soon you forget, that in 1984 the tigers swept the Royals and then went on to win the World Series that year 3-1. Trust me they didn’t lose because they swept their opponents in the ALCS, that myth needs to die. The Tigers got out coached and were beaten by a bunch of scrubs who came to the series with a superior game plan to the Tigers. All the Cardinals had to do to limit the Tigers offense was stop the long ball, which they did.

When I was a kid, the 68 Tigers taught me how to fall in love with baseball. When I was a young man, the 84 Tigers taught me that destiny is earned, not given. When I was a middle-aged man, the 06 Tigers taught me what it feels like to lose a World Series. Having never been on the losing end of a World Series, it made me feel numb more than anything. I just assumed we would win. By November of 2006, I learned what those fans in St. Louis and San Diego had had felt like while my city celebrated. Oh well, I guess we all have lessons we learn over time. The 84 team will always remain my favorite because I followed those guys as they came up and grew up (Tram, Jack, Lou, Gibby). The 06 experience hurt but I figured they were young and would get more bites at the apple. They did and along with it came more disappointment. 06 hurt, 2012 was an embarrassment. I never saw a Detroit team lay down the way that bunch did, not even when the Devils swept the Wings. When David Ortiz finally shot them and put them out of their misery the following post-season I knew whatever that team was going to do they had done. There would be no mountain-top, just a lot of stumbles and tumbles. The thing is, Mr. I tried to replicate the success he had with the Wings by opening his wallet. I appreciated the effort but buying a WS is different from buying a Cup, especially back when he did it with the Wings in the late 90s, early 2000s. This latest iteration of the Tigers has a chance to bring home that title that has alluded us for going on 40 years because it is being built the right way. It has been a painful rebuild but when they do win it, it will feel a lot like it did in 84. I'm on record saying 2024 will be the Year of the Tiger in Motown. 40 years since Sparky famously told Gibby: "He don't wanna walk you," before giving him that swing away sign against Gossage. 40 years since Larry Herndon squeezed that last out, letting loose a rush of emotion seldom seen at the old ballpark. My hope is I make it. That I'm allowed to see one more WS parade down Woodward Avenue before our Father calls me home. Bless you Boys and Go Get em Tigers, life is just better when your hometown baseball team wins it all. ⚾

Such a shame what has happened since Chris Ilitch took over the storied Tigers franchise from his late father, Mike, who also let it stagnate until after the historically horrible '03 season. Now its come full circle, in '19, with yet another team losing 110+ games after twin 98 loss seasons, and no end to the epic failing in sight. The ballclub's brass and organizational tree is ancient and incompetent. It needs to be uprooted and rebuilt as well. They do NOT have the top-notch scouting, coaching, analytical and player/pitcher development staffing necessary to compete, much less contend, compared to ballclubs like the Astros, A's, Twins, Rays, and Indians. How can the St. Louis Cardinals "rebuild" over the past half-century w/o fielding teams who finish under .500 in consecutive seasons? The ballclub fields postseason and WS contenders, if not champions about 3x per decade on average. Tigers have little in the way of blue chip positional prospects who are even close to being ready for the majors, and the few prospects who were brought up this season are largely failing to perform @ even replacement 'level. The franchise can pick high in the drafts, but if it can't properly develop their picks, then what's the point? They haven't really had a very productive farm system since the early 80s. Chis Ilitch has taken notice of how their small market rivals in the ALCD operate, and apparently that is how he plans to operate his mid-market Tigers, with low payrolls and shorter, cheaper 1-2 year contracts for any 'low-end FAs, Don't expect Chris to kickstart his ballclub into fielding contenders with pricey star FAs, like his late dad had, b/c it isn't gonna happen. He can weather sinking attendance figures @ CoPa just fine for now, with broadcast media contracts and especially MLB profit-sharing. Bet that he can't wait for Zimmermann and particularly Cabrera's albatross contracts to come off his ballclub's books.
