Claremont's my favorite comic writer, but I never understood the appeal of the X-Babies, either. Going further, I always thought Mojo and his dimension altogether were one of the least interesting aspects of the X-Men universe. I think when Ann Nocenti created it, she was trying to make commentary about TV executives and TV propaganda, but the metaphor never really worked for me.
