"Dearest Uncle Iroh, Do you remember when I used to write you letters? It must be this place, having its effect on me, but here on Ember Island, I find myself introspective and thinking back about my life. I think I used toy write you to buy me presents. Such a cheeky child. I've retired now, given up my throne for the peace of this place, to be warmed by the sun and my own memories. I think of you often here. My good memories wash over the good ones like waves on the shore, clearing the old sand and resetting. I remember summers on the beach, playing with Azula, we didn't want to kill each other then, though sometimes we acted like it. But the island brought us together. It did that again, one time, in our teens. It was a golden time. One I never felt again until Aang, Katara, Sokka, Toph and I had finished our journey and had a moment to enjoy each other's company. I am old now, and you have been gone to the Spirit World a great many years. I don't really know why I'm writing you this letter. Perhaps just thinking of you brings me back your voice, and writing to you brings you back to my side, where I could always count on you to be. I will probably just put this letter with the other in that journal you gave me all those years ago. At least for safekeeping. I could go back and read them all again, but I don't need to. I have memorized your words, Uncle, and so keep you with me at all times. You're with me every day and on every adventure. And now, the beach calls. They sell paper dragons there. Might pick one up. Zuko, age...much older than seven." - Legacy of the Fire Nation

If reading Sozin's journal in the catacombs is nice in his perspective, Iroh would surely have written everything in details, and I'm sure he would have gotten along with his mother before her disappearance and after her return. Though it's sad that he didn't elaborate more on Azula, but in the long run, he knew his brother had manipulated his niece and deep inside, he too felt the pain for the poor young girl.
@johnchoi4473 Жыл бұрын
the thing is you cant keep using that excuse of someone being manipulated once they reach a certain age. Azula THRIVED on CRUELTY, and there is no remorse for her. Azula and Ozai will suffer in hell together.
@addictedtochocolate920 Жыл бұрын
@@johnchoi4473 Azula is a 15 year old girl who has been rewarded her entire life for being a monster. Instead of stopping her and looking for a way to fix the issue, her mother feared her, because she knew Ozai would never allow her to turn his prodigy into a "weak" and sensible girl. If Azula was a monster beyond saving and redemption she wouldn't have gone crazy at the prospect of losing approval from her father; his praise was all she had in the end, and she realized it was all for nothing: all that cruelty, all those lives, all that effort, her friends, her mother; she abandoned everything to become the weapon his father admired, and he just brushed her aside when she was no longer of use. I truly believe that if Azula was actually evil, Ozai would've been dead long before the final battle. Ironically and in my opinion, love kept him alive
@johnchoi4473 Жыл бұрын
@Addicted To Chocolate no1 is truly evil. She was conditioned to be this way. Yes, redemption is possible for anyone no matter the deed, but is it the individual worth it? With that logic, every bloody tyrant in history can be redeemed. Reshaping her morals and rehabilitating her to society will take years of dedication, and she will cause damage in the meantime. Azula is responsible for thousands of deaths. The kids show just wont show violence xD.

Given Iroh's personality, maybe Azulon, despite his evil reputation, was a kind and caring father to him growing up.
@willn43302 жыл бұрын
I think it’s more likely the death of Iroh’s son. Keep in mind Iroh was the glorious fire nation general who breached the walls of Ba Sing Se. It wasn’t until he lost his son that had developed empathy and realizes the true cost of war. I’d argue that if he had not lost his son, he probably would’ve won the war with his siege on Ba Sing Se for the fire nation and come back to be the victorious fire lord. He had to experience true loss, both the loss of his son and then the evaporation of his rightful throne, to actually begin the path of enlightenment. Instead of falling into bitterness, he sought to better himself, to actually understand the world and gain enlightenment
@8393Robertrex2 жыл бұрын
I always did wonder about that. Cruel as he was to tell ozai to kill his own son, he was defending iroh, defending his right as the next heir, even though ozai was correct, iroh wasnt having anymore children, we all know it, and he certainly wasnt getting any more invested in the fire nation, but azulon didnt care. He refused to take yet anither thing from iroh. Let alone for his jealous brothers benefit, whilst he insults the man whod just sacrificed a son for their cause. He got the most angry at the fact that ozai called him weak for leaving the war, and thats what got azulon to demand he "learn what its like to lose a son" Theres a LOT to unpack in that one little scene, ESPECIALLY after considering the differences between ozai and iroh.

Azulon was '' just '' a dictator. I don't think he was a good father because he was tyranical even in private matters (we saw it when he forced Ursa to marry Ozai or when he ordered Ozai to kill Zuko). But in the end, he was better than Ozai. Ozai he clearly mentally ill : he has no empathy, enjoys the suffering of others (especially Ursa), loves to play mind games, etc. On top of being a dictator, he is extremely abusive.

Yeah but when you live forever in the spirit world the decades is just a fraction of time so he has all the time to look. But him knowing the good nature of spirit in the series and how the spirit world while dangerous, can be rewarding and wonderful, probably aren't in a hurry as he knows his son who he has raised are out there having a time of his life. Plus news are bound to reach Lu Ten about the nice old man who makes great tea and they'll be reunited sooner or later.
@andrewsalyer9658 Жыл бұрын
@@adam-bf8li I don't think Liu Ten had the same level of spiritual awareness that Iroh had. Not counting the people thrown into the fog of the lost, I believe that only people who are in tune with the spirit world are able to cross over as he did. I dont know why, but I genuinley started to tear up and cry, as if Iroh was my uncle and he just died right in front of me. But then hearing that last part about Pai sho not being Zuko's game, made me just bust a gut laughing while crying at thesame time, and that reminded me that 1. Zuko must genuinley suck at Pai sho if Iroh is throwing shade at Zuko with his dying breath. And 2. the fact that he probably wouldnt want anyone to be sad before, during, or after his death. He lived a full life and left his mark on the people he cared about as well as making a genuine difference in the world that he was once led to destroy. Iroh is and always will be one of the best characters, and parental figures, in fiction and that the literal act of this fictional person's passing away affecting us the viewer in a personal way isnt a testament to that statement, then I honestly dont know what would be. Even if Iroh is now a spirit in the spirit world who will never want to return to the material world, He will be missed and I hope he remains happy and content making tea and friends and giving out advice over a game of Pai sho.

One scene about Iroh that I can’t forget is when he heated his tea with bending in public, and Zuko screwed him for it. I always wondered why the writers made someone as wise and intelligent as him do that. While he may have been goofy and eccentric, I never thought that he would have been that stupid. Then I realised, he too is human, one who makes mistakes and slip ups, one who in his greed for a sip of delicious hot tea had a moment of weakness and accidentally almost made a grave mistake. Something we can all relate to, and if he can be like us, then we too could aspire to be like him

I know a lot of people find Ozai to be the blandest part of the Avatar series (although not necessarily bad), but I honestly believe that the simplest answer to his character is of being a narcissist and a psychopath. I don't mean those as an insult, I mean the textbook definition of those mental illnesses. Lack of emotional empathy or sympathy, violent social behaviors, inflated self-worth and sense of ego, "I have all the power in the world!" And as a man like that who was given the throne as firelord with the abilities of Sozin's comet, it's no wonder he was such a bastard that wanted to rule/destroy the world.

I just see it as showing that many of the worst people are not uniquely smart or interesting or tragic, they're just pathetic, bland people who happened to get ahold of a huge power and used it for themselves. kinda unrelated, but what "confuses" me is the huge age gap between the firelords if Ozai is only the third firelord in the 100 year war that has started when Azulon became firelord pretty much at its beginning anyway. Mind you, the hundred year war pretty much started when Roku died and got extreme when Aang, aged 12, went into a huge iceball and his nation went through genocide. Either Azulon had kids super late, Sozin had Azulon quite late, or Iroh and Ozai are actually quite old which I doubt as they're not appearing to be that old.
