If they ever released it on Blu Ray I'd purchase it for sure , That and captain EO . Don't know if either will cone to be however . What amazed me was how young James Baskett the actor who played Remus really was . He won an honorary academy award for his portrayal . Nice spot , Shame about the photos but the wood carvings were neat

I love Song of the South and Uncle Remus was such a lovely warm and smart character. I used to watch it all the time as a very young kid, and I'm from England so as a kid had no idea about slavery in America. Re-watching it as an adult with a better understanding is quite sad, but I don't think it should be banned. It was made in a time when people thought differently to how we do now, and I think it's important that movies like this are allowed to be seen to see the mistakes of our past and learn from them.
@STho2056 жыл бұрын
Song of the South was set in the 1880s, well after slavery. Remus was, of course, the wise man of the story. Aesop was an ancient world slave, thus the americanized version of the classic parables. So, in that context what do you find objectionable. Jane Austin movies to Jeeves and Wooster to Downton Abbey are set at a time of tenant farmers supporting the great estates of idle owners with hard work and often tragedy. People don't object.
@ryanOGab2 жыл бұрын
Yes It was set after slavey during the Reconstruction era, a period of American history after the end of the American Civil War and the abolition of slavery Considering bear rabbit represents the slave who is fast, clever, cunning and smart and bear fox and bear bear represent the slave masters who are dumb stupid, nasty, strong but lack direction,aggressive and lazy. Plus The actor James Baskett who played uncle Remus was the first blacks person /actor to win an Oscar for his portal, so if anyone wants to remove or undo song of the south your only removing black history and preventing an historical first step in film for black actors everywhere from being recognised and espionage James baskets acting achievement (as he died shorty after this being his last film) he and it deserved to been shown to this day.

Back in the 1970s the community pool would play this movie (projected with a real projector on an outdoor screen) in the evenings at least 3 times a year. Back then, communities could "rent" certain Disney films and display them at free-admission community gatherings. Good times, great memories. Ironically, I found a copy of Song of the South on DVD (bootleg of course) in of all places the Middle East back in 2007. You are correct, the "live action" sequences kind of drag and I wonder how it ever held the attention of children back in the day. The animation is on-point and holds up well. The songs are absolutely amazing.
@deniseboldea16246 жыл бұрын
I saw the original Song of the South, outside of the tar baby scene which could be interpreted as racist I feel that the people who passed judgement on the film missed the point of it. The boy in the film was being tormented by two bullies. He often confided his problems to Uncle Remus whom he admired. Uncle Remus used the Brer Rabbit stories to show the young man that the best way to beat the bullies was to outsmart them. Ultimately the kid does defeat them using brains over Braun. People also forget that not every freed slave necessarily left thier owners once freed. Some stayed either out of loyalty, or they really didn't see anyplace else they could go due to a lack of education.

I really enjoy the Song of the South movie. Unfortunately I was never able to see the full version but I have seen clips of scenes. I adore the Uncle Remus stories and hold the B'rer characters near to my heart. I do not find the "Tar Baby" story at all racist. It is a fable that is true to this day of age. Yes, the stories are of African American folk lore but they should be treasured and remembered by all because of the values they bring to every person could be used. I have some children's books that does have some Uncle Remus stories within, including the Tar Baby story. I gladly read it to my children.

It was released on Laserdisc. Oh and it was in the last half of the 90s that Disney removed the movie from the online database they keep. I am pretty sure it was also released on 16mm home film.

Disney did release "Song of the South", twice (the first in theatres, the second on VHS). The last time was some time in the 90's, then they pulled it and said they'd never release it again. So legitimate copies do exist, it's just that those that own them hang on to them for dear life. Also, the inspiration for the name of Splash Mountain came from the 80's movie with the same name.

I'm familiar with the Brer Rabbit stories but I never thought of it that way, as a fictional champion for slaves, because for me when I was a boy they were just cool stories. It's unfortunate that the Disney movie The Song of the South isn't available officially; I've never seen it but I'd like to, and I like to see movies in full Blu-ray quality when possible (especially a movie like that, an early attempt at live action/animation combination; it's always interesting to see early effects movies in the highest possible resolution). I am familiar with the story of the movie, though, because I had it as a book and tape set when I was a boy, which is where I learned the Brer Rabbit stories. And I remember the tar baby; that was part of the book and tape's story (actually it could've been a book and RECORD; I can't remember for sure). It's sad that those stories, which are an important part of American history, are so tainted by the legacy of racism. 😕

@Carpetbagger --Song of the south Was on an official Disney sanctioned VHS, in the USA, in 1984, hence the bootlegged copies we see now. They are horribly dubbed, from what I have seen., it needs a cleanup and actual reissue. Ask Disney why this is not out officially. It is easy to get a copy, if you want a sketchy bootleg. I saw it in the 1970s, on the big screen.
@STho2056 жыл бұрын
It is quite clear in the film it is post Civil War. Uncle Remus was leaving at the end of the story. Slaves don't just come and go at leisure. The clothes were late 19th century. The NAACP objected to the film because it had happy singing black farm workers, which they told Disney to take out or else. Disney left it in as "Holiday Inn" left the Father Abraham song and dance minstrel/blackface sequences in that same era. Oddly Hollywood damned the movie finally in the 60s, yet they keep remaking the movie proudly. Bruce/Evan Almighty, Glory, the Shining, Bagger Vance, and half the movies of Morgan Freeman. The genre is even called "The Magical Negro Movies" where a wise black man must guide a stupid white boy to manhood. It is hard to be a SJW without a big blindspot of hypocrisy somewhere.
