The incident that sticks out for me was early in my 30 yr career (ret. ‘97) stopping a young armed robbery suspect on the street. He kept reaching into his waistband facing away from me when I had my gun trained on him. As I was slowly pulling the trigger on that old .38 he turned around smiling and raising his hands. Turns out he had nothing and was not the guy we were looking for, and I came VERY close to killing him. It shook me up, I asked him why he would do such a foolish thing. He said he was just playing with me but I came so close to killing a young innocent kid it haunts to to this day. Like Scotty the times when I was forced to employ deadly force I was cleared by state police investigators, & are things I can live with. FWIW I met Ron McCarthy when he worked for IACP in the mid ‘80s and he was doing an analysis of an OIS where one of our guys was killed on a SWAT call. Impressive gentleman.

You can tell at the end of this video . Scott was emotionally effected by the father thanking him and the other D platoon officers for not killing his son . This is a sign of a very compassionate and understanding police officer . Just because you can take the shot doesn’t mean you have to . They had the composure and training to do this . In these troubled times of “ defunding the police “ we need more officers like Scott . Support your police , not try to destroy them .

Great story. I trained with the Stirling SMG as a senior army cadet in Canada. It was a lot of fun to shoot.

This is such an important lesson. Wish more instructors would focus on when not to shoot even if legally justified... always approached it as "must" and not "can". Thank you for taking the time to post these videos!

A ccw permit isn't required in order to carry in Kentucky, but I have one anyway. The instructor for my class has been carrying and shooting for just about as long as I've been alive, and I'm 43. So, one of the things he went over was almost exactly what was discussed in this video, basically the shoot/don't shoot decisions that need to be made over use of force. Another fine video, and thank you for sharing your stories. God bless.
