So much respect for LAPD. The initiative and drive and resolve to work in that profession in that department cannot be understated and these are the officers who made it and passed their probation to complete their careers; they all knew that they were qualified to be there. Already talented and motivated...they became more resourceful.

Back in the day, an old FTO told me: three "B's" get cops in trouble: booze, broads, and bills. Almost 34 years later I have come to learn that truer words were never spoken.

Many academy classmates of mine have gone down to the the three “B’s”. My FTO told me the same thing.

Uncle scotty, beinf the same as you running and gunning as a young officer back in the day, ive never heard a brother officer explain it this way and it touched me, thank you and for the time you put in. You are a true hero with the way you explain this to the young troops and their families.

Thank you for this. I put so much "behind the wall" and paid the price for it.

I work in a less stressful part of police work, still on the street, still seeing things. I have found that talking to my family and friends about it mostly leads to nods and not much else. Whether that's my shortcoming or theirs, it's hard not to have someone to talk to about calls. Maybe that's why I get chatty around a few friends who work for a different dept. I know I need to deal with things better, and it's always good to hear others go and have gone through the same issues, and worked through them.

It's their shortcoming, not yours. But it's not deliberate on their part. They haven't seen and done the things that you have, so they have no idea how to fathom or process what you've dealt with. Talk to others within the profession or a professional. Stay safe!

I used to do surveillance work for an insurance company, and that was stressful enough. I can only begin to imagine the tremendous stress involved in police work. Thanks for your continued service, Uncle Scotty!

Appreciate the information. In my case it took about 6 years on the job for it to hit me hard. The big thing for me to decompress is to involve myself with family and friends outside of the job who aren't police officers and to have hobbies that are unrelated to the field.

Thank you for these videos and the excellent advice. On my first day in RHD, my new partner asked me if I was married. I said yes - 7 years at that point. He told me I wouldn't be for long. He was right. I wish someone had told us how to handle the stress better back then.

Profound advice from a man who's been there. On some level, good advice on dealing with what others consider stress.

Been married now twice the first one couldn't be a cops wife the second/ current she is a keeper she is the mother of our children . Thankfully I'm on the back end and ride a desk now

You go home at the end of the day and your family doesn't understand what you've seen nor would you want to subject them to any of it. Evil stuff exists and you've seen it. They will never quite understand. Holidays get annoying when you hear people pontificate about this and that having not seen the reality you've seen. Good advice Uncle Scotty. Thank you.

This is a Great discussion. It is very True that those that you might talk to about your Stress don't understand because they haven't lived it. But that is a Good thing for them. I've also found out the hard way that in telling your wife about your stressful situations, that then becomes her stress. And she already has her own stress with Kids, and household issues or her work. So now she becomes doubly stressed. My Wife was my Best Friend and I could talk to her. But in hind sight after the divorce I should have included her a lot less and found or Created a support Group. Bowling night with the Guys, Church group, Fishing with the guys or what ever. Stay Away from Drugs and Alchohol as they take away your inhibitions, possibly making you impulsive. Remember that Suicide only Passes your Pain on to someone else and Magnifies it. Remember no Man is an Island. You don't have to Carry the Weight of the World by Yourself. Best Wishes! M.H
