I keep seeing a lot of confusion on the term 'grooming', so I feel like it's important to remember that it doesn't just mean an adult and minor and it isn't exclusively for sexual reasons. It's someone in a position of power over another person, which is often an adult and a minor but could be a boss and an employee, a professor and an adult student, a parent and a child, and so on. By grooming this person they have power (or a perceived authority) they're training someone to act in specific ways the groomer is aiming for. While this is often sexual, it isn't exclusively for sexual reasons and I think that's where people get confused on the term 'grooming'. For example; a cult leader grooms their followers into following their radicalized doctrines.

Yes, exactly! Do I (somewhat) believe Colleen saying she viewed these teenagers as her friends? Yes. It’s still weird as hell, but I do believe her when she says that was her perspective at the time. Did that mean it was ok to have sexually explicit conversations? FUCK NO. You’d think that’d be the point that makes her go “Hey hey guys no, let’s not talk about these things in the chat” or whatever, but in reality she was leading some of those conversations. So I can believe that she didn’t/doesn’t think she was grooming them because she didn’t have the goal of sleeping with them (IF we are going on her words…since there is no way to truly know her intentions at the time), however it is absolutely still grooming because she was engaging with minors in explicit conversations, knowing that (as you mentioned) she had a level of power over them as an influencer whom they looked up to. Ambiguous intent doesn’t matter with grooming, if your actions fit that definition, that means it’s SKETCH and you need to STOP.

Please understand that while not all grooming is pedophilic grooming, when someone on the Internet gets called a “groomer,” people are going to interpret that as referring to pedophilic grooming. Using the term “grooming” this broadly in the midst of the groomer moral panic currently storming the media and driving anti-LGBTQ panic is just contributing to the semantic creep and making it harder for victims of pedophilic grooming to be heard. If grooming refers to an adult manipulating a child for any purpose, what differentiates it from the word “manipulation”? An adult manipulating a child is already bad enough. We should be able to honor that trauma without eroding the meaning of the word “grooming” any more than it’s already been eroded. Please be respectful in your responses, I am making this comment as a victim of pedophilic grooming, a psychology student, and someone who’s worked in childcare for years and had to take multiple onboarding trainings on child safety including how to define and recognize signs of grooming.
