Most airports in the United States don't have a control tower. Looking at the FAA Sectional there are hundreds of airports and knowing what services are available and what to expect when you get to the airport is important.
First, we can tell whether the airport has a control tower or not, just by looking at the symbol. A magenta symbol indicates that an airport is non-towered, while a blue symbol indicates a tower. For this lesson we are only interested in the non-towered, magenta airports.
When figuring out if the airport is suitable for us to use, the first thing to look at is runway length. An airport with a solid circle and runway depictions inside indicates the longest runway is 1500-8069 feet long. An airport diagram that looks like a runway without a circle around it means that the longest runway is longer than 8069 feet.
Tick marks around the diagram indicate fuel services and other services are available from at least 10:00am to 4:00pm Monday-Friday. A star at the top of the diagram indicates a rotating beacon.
All other airport information is listed next to the diagram. This includes the airport name, identifier, weather frequency, elevation, longest runway length, CTAF frequency, and other notes.
While you can get almost everything you need just from the diagram, it is also important to check the airport/facility directory before you go. This will give you any other local information you need to know.

Since I'm currently studying for my sUAS Part 107 exam I'm watching a lot of these videos by various authors. Each one is providing me with valuable information. Thanks for this one! I picked up several new things I hadn't focused on before.

One of the clearest, most organized, and most helpful online tutorials I've come across. And for me, it helps that this is how most pilot sounds--cool, collected, confident. This is the lesson where things started clicking in my head. Thank you.

Best sectional chart tutorial I have seen so far. It would be nice at the end of the video to give a "click here for the towered tutorial"

Your style and pace (even the low-key music) are perfect to set up a friendly learning environment - something forgotten way, way back. It also works better, and the pace allows the student to check his/her own memory as you go along. Stay with it!!

Minor correction, @06:15, that should be in hundreds of feet rather than thousands of feet. You indirectly clarify that later in the video but it's good to point it out in case someone doesn't catch it. Thanks for the informative style of teaching!

Summerdale was/is an outlying airfield for US Navy flight training. That whole area has training fields that have been there since WWII. I trained there in 1989. Beautiful part of the country.

I've just begun to self study process to get my Private Pilot certificate. Two questions. First one is as a US Army veteran can a VA doctor or chiropractor sign me off for a basic Med certificate? Second question is how do I get the endorsement to sit for the knowledge exam?

I wonder why noone asked why exactly 8069ft... As if changing a major element on a sectional to another one basing on such a strange random number is widely accepted and is an ordinary thing.

@williammain3247

The scale of the sectional chart is the answer. Runways longer than 8069’ can be drawn their actual length to scale on the chart.

where did you come up with the second runway #s (21 & 23)? 3 and 5 are on the diagram but the others you mentioned aren't. Also, how do you know what direction the runway goes?

Very well explained. Thanks. One point to mention is at 04:19, you mention the “K” prefix is for United States airports. This should be clarified as being only for the lower 48 states, as Alaska and Hawaii use “P” as their prefix.
