A well intended video with a couple of errors. The car that Ramo ran in 1975 was in fact a Plymouth Fury in USAC. Also the 200 mph Daytona driven by Buddy Baker was stored behind the garage of 2 time USAC champion Don White, also from Keokuk, Ia.

Dear lord ... That's crazy how many different lives that car lived .. I think 1971 must been it's greatest year .. thank goodness the super bird restored.. wow something needs to be done with this ..not looks like it hit the wall 200 plus then left for dead .. thanks for the story

@@AutoArchaeology I will have to find out if his laptop is still around, he had a bunch of old parts like Ray Elder's Daytona hood autographed by Ray before he passed away, remember the walkout tires by Hoosier? he had a set of those amongst other team racing tires. He was friends with many iconic racing families from the great wing car era.

The body styles required by USAC were interesting. If you ran a Chrysler you could run it as a Volarie or an Aspen. These boxy bodies from the late '70's made cool looking stock cars. Sievekings and Schwister ran Fords and they had to use the Granada body.

I've said many times for a long time these things are more than just metal and other composite materials they may be made of. They're pieces of our history. How and why did they cut the driver's door bars out I wonder? I have an old Tom Winkle owned Pontiac that I found in similar condition, but they cut the chassis out from under it. So I have a roll cage and 3/4 of a body.

You just cut the old body off and mount a new one. Short of the wheel base change, it's pretty straight forward. The wheel base change isn't very hard either, but does require more work.

My family had a 1972 Plymouth Satellite Sebring, similar to the Roadrunner, and it was unibody construction. How do you change the body on a unibody car?
@thescottlot2672 жыл бұрын
Racing cars of that era were not unibody. The racing cars only had somewhat "stock" looking body panels - everything else was different from the 70s on.

My Hometown of Keokuk Iowa sure had a cool racing history! There’s some wild story’s from shady to downright amazing surrounding that area! It’s funny how many big deal race car parts and cars are bouncing around! About 12 years ago I sold an old diesel Mercedes that I regretfully left an Hurst Indy shifter in that was gifted to my dad from one of our locals of nascar fame, trinkets like that are kind of overlooked and there’s stuff still sitting in local fields and sheds that wasn’t really intended to end up in private hands.

Volare/Aspen are F-body Mopars, not A-bodies. And all race cars are nowhere near stock off the line cars.

@@AutoArchaeology thank you for that clarification, as I was just thinking how an Aspen is about the size of my 71 Duster, so that's why I made that assumption, and yes I am well aware that race cars are different than production cars, but back then the difference was not like it is today, or even during the 1980s for that matter.

Really that car isnt any part of the original car it started out as, the last engine in it was a 355 cubic inch small, the "chasis" surely isn't original and the only Roadrunner part of the body is the name itself. Just sayin. Otherwise good video and research finding out all that information of how they recycled the heck out of that thing eventually turning it into trash with the Volare body.

Odds of restoring that car are not that good. Cut the sheet metal off down to the frame and roll cage, sandblast it and reskin it a different body style. It's just cheaper to buy a more recent stock car. Yes, I know your thought is restoring it to what it last looked like, won't happened, that is why they junked it back in the day.
