Uncovering the Secrets of the Hideaway Headlights! 1965 Buick Riviera!

The 1965 Buick Riviera has a very complicated hideaway headlight opening mechanism that needs regular maintenance. I just converted these headlights over with a linear actuator kit from Dickster’s Smar”T” Pants, and it turns out that was just the start of this. After I got the headlights to actually function, I needed to go back and make sure that all of the moving parts are moving like they need to. I used a combination of Wheel Bearing Grease and White Lithium Grease, which is a heavier spray lubricant. I was rewarded with the headlight clamshells that open and close much smoother. This is one of the iconic features that I’m very glad to have working again.

I feel like it's more important to enjoy the car for what it is and slowly work on the little things as time allows. Even if I never get back to the ultra fine detail of making the clamshells line up perfectly, I feel good knowing that they are functional and still look absolutely awesome in their current form! I figure those little fiddly things are for winter, and it's now the season to enjoy the car!

I'll be making content with the Riviera as long as I'm near it. The car belongs to my dad, i get to wrench on it and drive it occasionally. There's some other ones in the works, I've got one on a new tool that I'll be reviewing, and my El Camino makes a comeback.

It needs to be replaced, it's not much good as it is. No need to put more work into it.

What air filter is that you are using? Have a brand or part number.

I'm using a K&N with an Xtreme Lid. I did a bunch of searching through the parts catalog to find ones that would fit the original air cleaner assembly. I'm using the Xtreme lid to help it breathe better. It does help quite a bit. This is also a single 4bbl car. I have not done any looking to figure out what the dual quad cars would need. Yes, putting the stock lid on over the Xtreme would defeat the purpose. The original air cleaner assembly is like breathing through a straw. The lid opens up a lot of breathing room.
