Just starting my instrument rating now. Looked great to me and you sounded like a pro. I learned a lot just watching this. Thanks for sharing!

Dude! I've always wanted to get my PPL...one day when I have the $$ to. It's the radio coms part of it that stresses me out more than anything else 🤣

When reporting altidue during a climb or decent, do not say "for" or "to". Instead say "9329W 3 thousand five hundred climbing 4 thousand." Just a bit shorter, precise and crisp.

Great feedback! Thanks!

Even though I don’t always do this, I agree that it’s short, precise, and crisp.

And I'm sure someone has said, don't say "OK" or "Roger". "Wilco" works - means will comply. There is a controller/pillot glossary in the appendix of the AIM with phrasology.

I notice that, in your pre-takeoff checklist, you say, "Flaps down." The Johnson bar is down, but the flaps are up. I usually say, "Flaps up," or, "Flaps zero." I know you know what you mean, but it could cause momentary confusion if you're ever flying with another pilot.

A habit I'm definitely working to break, especially as I watch myself on film doing it! 🙄

Looking for advice. Planning to fly Cherokee 180 into KMDW IFR. Practicing programing departures, but would it be easier to depart mdw vfr? Also might want to fly the coastline at 1700 msl(skyscraper tour), and then depart home to Ohio with flight following. Your thoughts.

Thanks for the question! Personally I think if you were wanting to fly the coastline, I'd depart VFR and then pickup IFR in the air once you are south of Chicago...? You'll still have to talk to MDW clearance upon departure though, so they might be confused since you'd have an IFR plan in the system - you may want to call clearance on the phone ahead of departure to talk thru what you're wanting to do and get your clearance that way so you don't hog up the ground freq with all the discussion. Enjoy though - coastline is beautiful! Let me know what you end up doing and how it goes with the communication!

I wouldn’t at all say you stumbled. My only criticism is that “ready for departure” is preferred over “ready for takeoff.” FYI I got my instrument rating in 1985 so I’ve had plenty of time to make every radio mistake!

Thanks for the feedback! "Ready for departure". ✔️
