Unlike most youtube "supercar" builds, you aren't reaching for clout. You are building a car that you want to build and not caring what purist say. I respect that. Most youtubes do the "look at my fancy car that you will never be able to afford'. Not once have you give off the vibe of the "im better then you" like others do. I usually watch builds that are either what car I'm currently building or a car that I could realistically own. Even though I can afford a 308, its still my favorite youtube build. For a clear hatch... Cut the same hole in two plates of steel as you'll have in your hatch. Weld legs on the bottom plate. Bolt the bottom plate with legs, plastic, and top plate together. These holes can be the same ones you'd use to fasten to the hatch. Stick the sandwiched plastic in an oven. The plastic will start to droop. You'll have to keep checking on when to stop, more time, more droop. If you want multiple drops aka F40 style, put some bars going across. Spray all the steel with silicon! Now where are you going to find an oven big enough? You could investigate any place that makes windshields for helicopters or places that make custom orthopedic braces melt plastic like this all the time. Or perhaps you could try making your own?

Don’t forget you can blow your own shapes like they did back in the day for custom bubble tops like Ed Roth and Gene Winfield. You need a big box, some heat, a forming buck and an air supply.
@stanceworks3 жыл бұрын
🤔 hmmmmmm.
@brentshanahan9473 жыл бұрын
I wanted to try this a while back and from what I remember you basically need an oven big enough to fit the lexan sheet that can very slowly bring it up to temp. Heat it too quick or uneven and moisture in the lexan can boil causing bubbles. Not enough heat will cause spider cracking on tight bends. Seemed more trouble than it was worth for a one off part for me but this car might be different

Lexan or plexiglass ( look the same but different properties when it comes to working with them) sounds great, but with a turbo engine I would think a wire mesh would allow heat to escape way better. Great work and your car, your mods!! For your rear window idea, I suggest you get with a manufacturer of airplane cockpit canopies and see what they recommend for trying to do this. It is challenging to form a large piece of Lexan into a part such as the F40 rear window (BTW, the price shown for the one for sale was a very reasonable price) and often there are multiple tries to get one correct piece. Best of luck with this effort and looking forward to what you come up with.

I really like this project. The only thing that hangs me up on it is the way that engine is going to make its power. Sure, you might get a big number out of it, but it's going be be very peaky with very little "under the curve". The bigger the turbo, the more true this is. You'll have to drive it like you hate it, and the gear box needs to have the right ratios to keep you in the boost as much as possible. I think it's going to be hard (but fun) to learn to get fast laps against torque(ier) cars that can charge out of the corners.
