I read all the comments. For the nincompoops out there (and a certain person in the interview - initials MC); FIDE *has changed* time controls in the classical format to make it more exciting/watchable. The 40th move time-control is already very stressful, and many 2700+ players struggle already in complex middlegames (e.g. Leinier, So, Giri, etc. ). We have Super GMs lose on time as well sometimes!! For the *people who are so ignorant of history* [may be some were probably not born then], here is a refresher: 1. FIDE used to have classical games over _two days_ - yes that's right, 2 and a half hours for the first 40 moves with longer increments I think. And games used to go on for an entire evening, then they _adjourned_ (player having the move will "write down" the move seal it and pass it to the arbiter - and that move will be played next day!) 2. FIDE then reduced it to 2 hours each - option of adjournment. 3. Then the current system 1 and 1/2 hours for the first 40 moves. So, FIDE *will not reduce it* further. People *watch golf* , they *watch test cricket* (both over several days!!) If you want quality, and determine the best, this is the format. It's only 4-7 hours now. Don't play it if you don't like it then. Or don't whine like a cry baby "waah waah - I want 2900" - and still play it!!!

Players often prepare for well over a year for the world championship, dropping other tournaments to make time for study. If you are a contender, that's fine, it's a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. If you are the world champion, however, that means you are forced into a perpetual stage of preparation. It’s a lot of work. It’s especially frustrating as it is seemingly pointless. The point of a championship is to determine the best player. In chess, the field doesn’t change very quickly; we know this because ratings exist. Ratings remain relatively steady for quite a long time, there is no need to test to see who is the best every 2 years when almost nothing has changed in that time. Even the Olympics tests on a 4 year period, and that’s in athletics, where time plays a much bigger factor due to the effects of aging.
@kwanro9172 Жыл бұрын
If you make one mistake, you basically lose the championship because of how few games there are. The way you solve this is to have more games so it's more likely the better player will win out. But you can't have more games, when each game lasts like 4-7 hours. It would be torture to play like 20+ games that all last hours. The solution as Magnus proposes is to then reduce the time, but play more games. He proposed giving each player 45 minutes, +15min at move 40, and time increments. Also, chess has evolved from the 1900s due to engines. Time management is arguably a better measure of a chess player's skill, as engines have made exploring and memorizing entire lines trivial. Anyone can use engines to prep and solve lines. Only the best can improv in a time crunch.

@ChessDownUnder Жыл бұрын
I agree that they should consider changing the format to be mixed time controls. For example - to followers of cricket, I like how the women's Ashes series between AUS and ENG was. It was one long test match, followed by three ODIs and then three T20s. I think that approach isn't just "who is the better test match team?", but instead playing against all formats is asking the more general question "who is the best team?". I think the same can be applied to Chess. Consider something like the following: 2x Classical Matches (Each win is worth 5pts) 4x Rapid Matches (Each win is worth 3pts) 6x Blitz Matches (Each win is worth 2pts) That way its more of a true test of chess ability across the different time controls, and its not simply a test of who has the better team of seconds who were able to prepare the best novelties. Don't get me wrong, there is a part of that which I love as a chess spectator, to see the battle between the two camps. For example, when Krammnik played vs Annand and had their famous battles in the semi-slav, in many ways it was a battle between the seconds and a battle of preparation. I do find that interesting, but it shouldn't be EVERYTHING - thats why we should also bring rapid and blitz into the format as well so the World Championship match is also a test of chess general intuition. I also think it will bring more general popular attention to chess in general, the mixed format would appeal to a wider audience of more casual viewers. Casual viewers don't want to follow a single game of chess over multiple hours. That is why rapid and blitz events get so much viewership these days on streaming platforms, it appeals more to the masses. Cricket has realised this with their T20 format. All countries now have updated their main summer domestic events to revolve around T20 series, because the shorter time format is what brings the spectators to the stadium.

The problem with WC tournament is that the system favors playing draws and attempting one win at the last possible moment. You minimize your risk and maximize the chance of winning the whole thing. What Magnus essentially wants is more games and less swingy results. The easiest format to achieve this would be playing until one side has won 6 games... but Kasparov - Karpov 1984 put a stop to that. 48 games which lasted for 5 months and only ended because Karpov collapsed and ended up in a hospital. Playing more shorter games, determining world champ via some other means (rating, score from classical tournaments) etc. are other options. But here's the thing: FIDE doesn't want to change the event because it's the most popular and best known chess event. It makes them the most money and gives chess the most visibility. Good luck fixing that.

I doubt he would want to voice his opinion on that. He probably feels that it's not his place. As for when he would play, I assume he would play if it was every 4 years instead of every 2, the preparation time seems to be the main issue -- not match time.

Magnus wants Four games of rapid 25+10 each day or six games of 15 +10. Match would be like best of 48 to 60 depending on time control. Hear me out: 16 players qualify for the WC. There’s no Candidates, just one big tournament. They play in 4 4-men groups where the best two get to the Quarterfinals. Time Control is 90 minutes plus 30 second increment per move without additional time (which often confuses new viewers). In the Groups you play two times against each opponent which equals 6 games. In the Quarterfinals and Semifinals you play 4 games, in the Final 6. If a match is tied there could be the Tiebreak format from the World Cup. In total there would be 20 games/days of play. What do you think?
