Rockstar just had to flip the switch and stop GTA Online from running on deck the day I posted this 😑 As far as I understand, the single player mode works fine still (with a fun new added update requiring you start the game on an internet connection), but the game went from fully verified to unsupported. Had I known this was going to happen, I wouldn’t have put the clip in the video.

I had about 40 games in my steam library before I got my deck in december 2022, now I have about 600. It completely re-invigorated my passion for gaming that had been lost for years prior and for the first time in my life got me interested in AAA games

Wow, someone who really REALLY gets it. When I got my Steam Deck, it wasn't just another game machine to play on, it basically became my Swiss army knife - I would throw copious things at it to see what it could do, and it never balked at what I was attempting, no matter how silly or seemingly impossible. I also felt like playing games at a computer desk felt very off - not that it's bad, but when you're using that same space to also work, it feels as if I'm meant to be doing something else entirely. Growing up with portable gaming, I missed that feeling of taking my games with me and turning anywhere into a play space, so it basically brought that back for me. Also got recommended this video out of nowhere (okay, maybe because I follow a lot of Steam Deck-adjacent channels), I think KZbin did me a solid and found a really intriguing channel for me. Looking forward to your new stuff, and I'll peep the backlog of material too.

Thanks for watching! I hope you like what you see on the channel! Your sentiment about playing on a desktop computer was the exact thing that kept me away from PC for years. Since I was always on the computer for work, sitting at a desk to play more games felt like more work. I am so thankful that the handheld PC market is expanding because it's all the games I want to play with none of the mental blockage that comes with sitting at a keyboard.

As someone whos been gaming since before 'graphics' existed and owned pretty much every console and built PCs for years, i have to say that the steamdeck is the best 'gaming' device ive ever bought, i cant explain why, i have more powerful PCs, i have a PS5 but i find both of them gathering dust. @Under10Hours
@Under10Hours 3 ай бұрын
That is so disappointing. I had no idea you couldn't just buy one if you wanted. Do you know anyone in the states that could help you snag one, if you still want it? Also, is this just a Steam Deck thing, or is this a common issue with other kinds of tech?
@ultraokletsgo

@Under10Hours It's just a commercial decision by Valve. I think their choice is informed by the very strict consumer protection laws we have here in Australia regarding warranties, defects and refunds. Remember how Steam didn't have a refund system? Guess which country kicked up a stink to push them to implement one. I think that left a sour taste in Valves mouth. However, selling any electronic product in any country requires adherence to that countries regulatory rules, and maybe we have one in Aus that disqualifies the Steam Deck or maybe there are some registration fees that Valve just don't want to pay because they don't think the market is big enough here or they don't want to have a shortage of inventory for other countries. All that to say, it's a business decision by Valve not to sell it here.

Thanks for this video that I can finally send to friends to show them the versatility of the Steam Deck. I tried to explain it to them before but I never manage to quite put it into words right. I think this video shows perfectly what I've been trying to say to them. It's hard to convince console gamers like them how great and versatile this thing is, I would know because I was a console gamer before getting the Steamdeck myself. It was an impulse buy because I wanted to play Palworld so badly at the beginning of the year and it wasn't available on PS5 at the time yet. But it has since opened my eyes to so much more. I was always a fan of emulation on my old crappy laptop but I never knew what was possible with mods and texture packs and alike. Whenever I play another game now I'm always looking at what mods are available for it. It really is crazy how dedicated fans improve so many new and old games alike to a completely new level that the official publisher couldn't be bothered to do (this couldn't be more true for Pokemon games in particular). Above all else I'm really glad that the Steamdeck as an easy to use PC handheld has enabled me to play so many great passionate fan projects and mods that I could never hope to play on a tradional unmodified console while still giving me that plug in and play console experience (once said mods are installed) where I don't have to bother with Windows frustrations like when I initially tried to get into PC gaming on a gaming laptop.

I agree on the versatility. The Steam Deck gets me about 80% of where I would like to be for old Win apps & games to recent apps too, in Desktop Mode. The third party docks and your own gear works great with it. Once I get closer to 95% or one day 100% compatiblity and reliability, I will be on a Steam Deck and a Pop OS Linux PC by System 76 for most of my music, game development, VO, and other creations going forward.

This really is the perfect kind of customer for the Steam Deck. For people that like to play on handhelds and aren't the type that don't want to ever see a settings menu and have no interest in the way anything works, it really is a great gateway into PC gaming, Linux, and an awesome value proposition. (I love PC handhelds taking off like this in general though. I used to want a GPD Win 2 and later devices so bad, but the price tag and risk, where if something went wrong I'd have to try to deal with Chinese companies, stopped me from jumping in until the Steam Deck released. Thankfully, with the boom now even Best Buy is selling some Aya Neo devices and they're more accessible than ever. As much as I appreciate the Steam Deck I might switch to something else later because we have so many great options that can fit specific individuals wants and needs these days. Good times.)

I've been waiting for something like the steam deck forever. Back in 2011 I bought a surface pro trying to run PC games on it. I also would play around trying to get bunch of games working on Mac as well. Nothing really got close to what I wanted until 2017 when the Switch came out. A portable tablet or game console that can dock to a TV or play AAA games at decent FPS and resolutions. The deck is not perfect, and the more you push its limits, you'll notice it, but it doesn't stop you from trying at all. And if you can get it to work, nobody is gonna stop it. I don't own a gaming laptop anymore since having one and it's frictionless with the pick up and play design. Put the game in sleep and pick it up later to resume.

"hardware purist"? Emulation surpassed real hardware. There's no reason for real hardware or paying some scalper hundred for a game.
@Under10Hours
@Under10Hours 3 ай бұрын
I agree. Scalping has gotten ridiculous, and I refuse to pay for any of that anymore. But if I emulate a game and it's perfect and I make a video on that experience, and then someone digs their old console out of their attic after seeing my video to play a game I discussed, we aren't having the same experience. Hardware is the baseline for what you can expect. Driver 2 is a great example of a game that plays very slowly on console, but is full speed after emulation. You can always get better through emulation, but you can't get worse than console.
@jtchoi2003
@jtchoi2003 3 ай бұрын
Sure, but consoles also allow me to get soldering experience with cool modifications or repairs. You can't do much on laptops or handheld PCs unless you have a hot air station to upgrade the RAM or maybe the WiFi card, but that's about it. Any other soldering you would do on a computer would literally only be for repair purposes. That being said, I'm not the type who has much interest in systems older than 6th gen anyway. Anything older is easily emulated on a toaster these days, even on modded Xboxes or 7th gen consoles Also yeah, I'll agree with the game scalpers point. The only way to get good prices these days is to go to thrift stores or buy from local sellers, lol. Thats why I want to mod consoles to use ODEs/flashcarts or softmod them to play off their internal hard drives.
@thommohawk1216
@thommohawk1216 3 ай бұрын
Yeah but emulation is free too, but you don't get that physical joy of using the original console though sometimes can be bad too I use a lot of different controllers these days as an adult - PS5 controller on PS3 console via converter for example and PS4 on PS2 respectively. Modern joys for older hardware.
@THRILLSON2183
@THRILLSON2183 3 ай бұрын
Emulation isn’t always perfect, and some people prefer to play the original experience. Think dithering or other CRT display advantages. Also it isn’t always “legal” and some people care about that. People also like to display their collections. I wouldn’t call it scalping either because these games are out of print. “Retired” goods/toys/collectibles whatever you want to call them will always have a market value that is enforced by things like quality and rarity. Scalping is buying out current run products and creating a shortage. Like PS5’s in 2020-2021. It’s up to game devs and license holders to re-release games. Square Enix still sells the final fantasy games as new for their original hardware. Sure some people might buy up a bunch of games but it is largely the fact that they are out of print that is driving the costs. You can also modify hardware to play game isos. Dreamcast has no copy protection, ps2 has freemcboot and OPL, Xbox has Xbmc and other custom firmware. Swiss for GameCube. Wii’s are hilariously easy to hack. Then all you need is hardware for your ISO’s.

I’m in the ROG camp just because I like being able to swap things easily from my desktop. Emulation is something I’m just starting to get with since I sold my original retro gaming collection years ago. Replacing what I sold would likely cost me thousands more than I originally got everything for (RIP my Nomad and Jaguar), but emulation is the perfect replacement so long as I don’t overload myself with games to play.

@QF_Dan72 3 ай бұрын
Glad to see you returned. I really miss your reviews. Regarding emulation, i think it's a better option compared to buying physical games that are becoming expensive. I used to have this mindset where buying physical game makes you have a bigger ownership of your games but as time went on, i just don't think so anymore. I got so many games sitting on my shelf and every few days i keep thinking to myself, was it worth it wasting your money just to get the games from your nostalgia? Why should i play them when i can just emulate them? It keeps going back and forth until recently, i decide to just sell all of my games and then embrace emulation. Yeah, some elitists would say "you are not playing the authentic", to which i say "screw them", games are meant to be played, not to be stored on a shelf waiting for days to be put into console. So i better sell them while they still have values. Currently i emulate on my phone and when i got enough money, i will also purchase a Steam Deck.
@Under10Hours
@Under10Hours 3 ай бұрын
I would be lying if I said I hadn't considered selling off some games as emulation has gotten so good. I still love them, but as my priorities change, being able to play these games reliably through emulation has made collecting every single game feel less necessary too.

It would be nice to have a video about how to actually use a journal. I have a lot of trouble starting one but feel like it would be useful...
@Under10Hours
@Under10Hours 3 ай бұрын
I don't think there is one right or wrong way to start a journal so I don't know if making a video would be helpful to a ton of people. When I started my first bullet journal in 2019, I had previously been trying to keep all my responsibilities in my head. After a while that stopped working, and I turned to KZbin for ideas. I had tried digital and physical journaling years leading up to it, and I couldn't ever stick with it for more than a few weeks. Eventually the trend of Bullet Journaling popped up as an efficient way to reclaim your time. Not everything in the "official bullet journal" method worked for me, but over time I took what did work and kept it up and started adapting or removing what didn't. Today, I mostly use my journal as a scrapbook and a way to document and get my feelings out on paper. My notebook is an A6-size Hobonichi planner that has one page per day. Since the book is smaller, the empty page isn't as daunting. Plus there is a quote at the bottom of each couple of pages for inspiration. I use an HP Sprocket to print photos and make collages of video games, movies and books I liked each month. Or I'll put photos of major life events or world events (unfortunately a lot of those lately) on the days they happened. My only real advice for starting a journal would be to ask yourself why you want one in the first place i.e. organization, documenting your life, processing things that happened, etc. Then you can look at different content creators or go to r/journaling and get some inspiration. There's a lot of pressure on KZbin to make your journal beautiful, and there is value to making something like that if it's calming and something you enjoy, but if that doesn't work for you, don't force yourself to do it. It's important to keep in mind that a journal is supposed to be a helpful tool, not a burden you feel tied to.

My 2012 PC is showing its age, even with a SSD and 1060. Before I save enough for a new machine that will last +10 years, the Steam Deck will be a stepping stone. Win10 has become increasingly annoying with MS begging to use all their services all the time. I only need VLC/Foobar, Firefox, Discord - maybe light photo editing with GIMP or Krita. Other channels showed that my +400 gog games will work. Another proved that external DVD drives will work for music and movies.

I finally caved in and ordered a steam deck. Very excited about it. Should be coming soon friday maybe. I was wondering is emulation really that easy as everybody says. I'd say im a tech noob but hopefully it won't be hard for me since I plan on using my steam deck for a lot of emulation
@Under10Hours
@Under10Hours 3 ай бұрын
It's a great device for emulation, and EmuDeck makes it a lot easier. There are tons of great guides on how to use it. It takes a little elbow grease, but since EmuDeck installs emulators in bulk, it streamlines the process a lot. The one thing I'll stress is that you do have to provide the system BIOS files for a lot of the emulators so make sure you get those as well. Also after the lawsuit with Yuzu, you might have to find it and download it separately. I just searched for a tutorial, and I found this one to be very thorough. If you run into any trouble, the community is very helpful and welcoming. kzbin.info/www/bejne/l4ubmqOOntyjr8U

I wish the made a "mini" version. Smaller and less powerful. I don't need the option to play RDR or cyberpunk in handheld, it's just better on big screen, but having steam saves on indies of switch level like Hades and stuff, that would be out of this world value.

In retrospect, mistakes were made and I am kind of stuck with it. I built an ITX board with a simple case that helps it stand out less in my living room. I got a 13th Gen Intel Core i5 (but with the design issues from the factory I should have gone with AMD), an RTX 2080 Founders Edition, and 3TB of storage on M.2 drives. It was a sort of budget build, but it handles all I want very well, even up to 4K on less demanding games. I mostly play in 1440p for anything that drops frames, and I am really happy with it. EDIT: Forgot to mention 32GB of RAM.
