I got my bike stolen while I was inside the library. It was a very old bike (25 years old) and was in poor condition. I also hid the bike behind a big tree with a big bush infront of it. I even chained the bike to the tree. I was in the library for only 5 minutes, and when I came back my chain was laying cut inside of the bush and my bike was gone. It really messed my day up too because I lived 2 miles from the library, and now had to walk home. That bike wasn't even worth 10 dollars at a garage sale. Who are these low lives that steal bikes the second they see them, it's a serious problem

"They can't prove he's the actual thief." It doesn't matter. He's in possession of the bike, and Possession of Stolen Goods is a crime. In many jurisdictions, it carries the same penalty as if they are the actual thief.
@johnstack5008
@johnstack5008 Жыл бұрын
The prosecution would have to prove beyond reasonable doubt that the guy knew that the bike was stolen to convict. That's why they didn't arrest him. Think about it. Any used item that you buy, say from a yard sale or on Ebay could be stolen. How would you know? Way too many innocent people would get caught up if that was the law.
@thatguyrich9822
@thatguyrich9822 Жыл бұрын
@@johnstack5008 While you're mostly correct, it leaves a requirement for the person with the stolen item to detail how/where they got, and most importantly, from whom. Also, buying a $500 gold necklace (not in this video) for only $20, a reasonable person could conclude they knew it had to be stolen for that price point.
@johnstack5008
@johnstack5008 Жыл бұрын
Under the law he has the right to remain silent, and his silence can't be used against him in court. With the necklace example, it's likely that he knew it was stolen but it's not proof beyond a reasonable doubt which is what's required to convict. All the cops can do is detain him and hope that he admits to the crime, but with no other evidence, they have to let him go.
@thatguyrich9822
@thatguyrich9822 Жыл бұрын
@@johnstack5008 This is where you're incorrect. Being in possession of stolen property, but saying that you were unaware that it was stolen, is called an affirmative defense. An affirmative defense means you understand that you're in the wrong, you do indeed have stolen property, but you have a reasonable explanation. That reasonable explanation must be communicated in detail, otherwise the charge can fall on you. This isn't just some theory, this is how millions of people have been convicted of possession of stolen property. When you have stolen property, but refuse to communicate how you got it, you're complicit. Imagine if cops found a gun on you, a gun that was used in a murder... you tell them you bought the gun earlier that day, but refuse to say how, or from who. Do you think the cops will just go "oh, OK," or do you think you're getting hit with a murder charge?
@johnstack5008
@johnstack5008 Жыл бұрын
@@thatguyrich9822 If you have stolen property you should expect to get arrested. But we are not talking about getting arrested or charged. We are talking about getting convicted. Any criminal defense attorney worth his beans will tell you to remain silent until you speak to an attorney. The attorney represents you and you should let him speak on your behalf.

I had my cannondale quick cx3 stolen early last year while I was insode my friends apartment. I parked my bike inside the complex and my friend watched out the window but couldn't get to the door fast enough. I put it on Facebook and the next day my friend at a pawn shop called and said someone was trying to sell them my bike. The police caught the guy but didn't recover the bike. He owes me $1000 in restitution, of which he's paid $100 in almost 2 years. Contacted his PO and he recently left to Arizona. I go to court next month to request reincarceration and payment.

Just in case anyone reads this. All hope is not lost. Although i never got the bike back, i have gotten over half of the restitution owed to me for the loss of the bike. I learned my lesson and have bot a cable lock and a U-lock i use wherever i go now. Expensive as they are, its cheaper than having to buy a new bike.

+insectdude1258 Glad you got at least some restitution. I had my bike stolen several years ago. It was an expensive bike but I was making good money at the time so it was not a huge issue financially to me but it is personal. I also made a bike (heavily modified an existing frame) for a friend's disabled son. It wasn't even really useful for someone without the same disability & someone stole that. The kid was devastated & the thief got nothing useful. Maybe a few parts for a kids bike. Why? We did make a new bike for him & he does use a quality lock now.

the cops never got any of my bikes back but I did along with a friend's and my sister's bike back. I was up in our tree house recording some birds. I has a clear view of my friends back yard from the tree house sense it hung over the property line. the bike was chained to the ladder on her side. I got the teen red handed and I know ruffly where he lived to I rode my bike to his apartment in his gated community and asked the gaurd to call his mother. she came to the gate and watched the video. she then called her son to get home now. the teen went alone to get the dike and brought back the wrong one. it was my sister's bike. then we fallowed him to the family's storage room to fine over 30 stolen bikes along with other stolen stuff. the mother yanked his pants down and whooped him then called the police. the teen spent 4 years in juvy.

It isn’t done here either. This was done as a Public Relations stunt. Cops don’t care about stolen bikes. They do revenue enforcement or crimes where injuries are involved. Writing tickets were fines are collected is their primary focus. The judicial system doesn’t prosecute other crimes with no injury. It doesn’t happen.

I've had plenty of bikes stolen when i was younger. Cops never did anything to help. Even had a dirtbike stolen. Cops did nothing to find it. I suggest keeping expensive bikes inside. That way if a criminal breaks in you're justified in using deadly force. At least in my state. You would probably do life for cursing at a thief in California.

Rainbow Dash I live in New Orleans and if someone call their self trying to steal a car and break their hand the police will let the person go to the hospital to get a cast on his hand then take him to Jail, if he would've broke in someone's home and got shot and kill inside the home the police not going to do the home owner nothing but ask what happened then take the dead body out the house and the home owner won't go to Jail because here it's legal to kill somebody in New Orleans only if the person or people is still in your home.

People have no moral compass today. Back in the 1960's I owned several bikes as a kid, and I never had to lock it up. I would walk into any store, leave my bike parked outside without locking it and it would be there when I returned. Locking up one's bike was not even thought of. Also people left their keys in their car and never had to worry about it being stolen. When did things change and why?

In 1994 I lost a Gt Timberline with Road Shocks front fork, 30 centimeter frame... I rode that bike everywhere. 1 day I rode from Concord to Lodi and back. A friend talked me into accepting a fee and allowing him use of it. He had it locked up at fisherman’s wharf. Descent lock, braided steel cable with a master lock. He showed me the cable, cut by a good set of cutters. The most incredible thing is this guy owned up. I had offered to sell it to him for a descent price. When he approached me about the theft, he asked me what I said the price was. I told him, and he pulled it out of the bank and handed it to me. I don’t think I’ve ever since witnessed that kind of character.

Cops are so ineffective with finding actual stolen cars / bikes. They should be helping people who get their bikes stolen, not planting ones to pretend like they actually solve crimes. Like another poster says, they come, write a report (usually without getting out of their cruiser), and you never see them or your stuff again! They will also blame you for the theft. "Why didn't you lock it up better?" Etc.
@ElTacoAssassin
@ElTacoAssassin 8 жыл бұрын
They aren't planting bikes to "pretend like they are actually solving crimes". They plant the bikes to catch thieves who possibly have stolen before or might in the future. Catching thieves with bait is the most efficient way to fix this issue. Not only do they offer up their own bikes for the taking rather than an innocent civilian's, but they are more likely to catch the criminals this way as these bikes have GPS and undercover officers around.
@pickles3128
@pickles3128 8 жыл бұрын
+ElTacoAssassin This is diverting police attention away from crimes against citizens. Did you know drunk driving deaths go up when police set up sobriety checkpoints? Each checkpoint has at least 20 officers who aren't intercepting actual drunks before they kill themselves or someone else. It's the same thing here. I had my bike stolen as a kid. The thief who took my bike was under 18 as well so they didn't do anything. They only busted him after my bike went to a chop shop. At least they were kind enough to return my handlebars!
@pickles3128
@pickles3128 8 жыл бұрын
Also, I may point out that they're offering up their own bikes? No, they're offering up bicycles bought with taxpayer (read: your and my) money! How thoughtful. Have one of the officers give up his own personal expensive bike / paycheck and I'll be happy to commend them for that. But they're still diverting attention from real crimes.

You and me both. I love seeing these videos. I bought my first Trek bike in 2000. It lasted me 15 years. In August 2015 I donated and bought my second Trek. Neither one has ever been stolen because whenever I leave it my bike is locked up with a kryptonite lock.

Hi Caeser....Every time I have left my bike it has always been locked up with a Kryptonitelock. Three times when I came out I have seen my bike rearranged in the bed of my truck. But it has never been stolen.

imagine that cops using a helicopter for a bike thief and most people get their car stolen without much of any help. lmao

When I was still living in the Netherlands, I had three locks on my bike and nobody stole it ever. I had 1 thick chain lock, a thick U lock and the highest level master hang lock on the front tire. Come on! A flimsy plastic lock is just a joke.

Mads V you are a lucky man. I don’t think that’s a common thing. Usually thieves aren’t as kind to your belongings as you are.

This is nothing, go to Amsterdam and see how long it takes to get your bike stolen. Every single bike there is locked up with giant tool-proof chains and most even have a special rear wheel lock for short stops. I went there with my Raleigh, a cable lock and no idea about the bike theft problem there and it was gone within an hour. However it did end up making my Europe trip easier since I could ride any train without having to worry about a place to put my bike.

Coincidentally, Amsterdam is also the city were one can buy a bike at very, very affordable prices, usually from very questionable people.

People don't realize the value of this, it removes scum from the area. It also invokes fear in people, imagine ur a thief and u see 100s of these bait vids. U will be scared to continue. Why wait to hunt and arrest a thief when he steals from randoms when u can capture them b4 hand
