Carbon Capture and Bio Diversity will work along side the mgmt. of the moors in their current capacity. The ladder trap is a well known tool for catching jackdaws and crows which is what we saw and to protect both livestock (lambs as well as baby grouse) as well as maintain a sustainable habitat. Could Channel 4 review the moors above Lake Vyrnwy which has been managed by the RSPB. The total drop in wild birds has been significant and yet is never mentioned. However, the managed moor not too far away is seeing an abundance of wild birds, including goshawks and hen harriers...
@theotheseaeagle2 жыл бұрын
How is it showing an abundance of raptors when they are constantly being culled? Go to any driven grouse moor and chances are the only thing you will see is a grouse, maybe a crow or couple of lapwing if your lucky. Then go to a moor where it’s still managed (e.g burning/cutting heather) but not used as mono-culture for grouse and you will see tons of curlews etc. I can understand that ground predators do need to be managed in some circumstances, but culling corvids and birds of prey won’t help any endangered species, especially when you take into account corvids and raptors have a very minimal impact on overall bird populations

We also have no Red Kites, Osprey or Eagles. This is because fox, magpies and crows, have been the dominant predators. There is only a limited food supply so all other competitors are struggling to establish. Do you see my point? Like it or not, the managed shoots produce more varied species in greater numbers compared with non managed lands.
@ChrisJB3 жыл бұрын
Yes, but we have those three raptor species in habitats where no driven grouse shooting takes place and where predators aren't 'removed'. Your point also illustrates beautifully that red grouse aren't dependent on grouse moors (contrary to what Silver Back above says). My point being that those species can happily exist where grouse moors do not. I have driven grouse moors close at hand and I have decent moors close at hand, so comparisons are straightforward. And with my experiences of both, I am confident in my assertions that the archaic management of grouse moors impacts biodiversity harshly, whether it be raptors, waders, small mammals, amphibians, reptiles and/or invertebrates. I have spent some time in a conservation capacity in Eire and whilst not overly blessed with raptors, it makes up for it in other ways. ATB, Chris

I think they could easily replace the jobs they lose if grouse shooting were shut down with tourism jobs if these places became nature reserves. Stopping the grouse shoots and allowing trees to grow so that wildlife would return to these areas would make them much more attractive to tourists. At the moment they are wildlife deserts as a result of the current use of the land. And actually the public aren't allowed in these areas as they are reserved for the wealthy who pay large sums of money to shoot grouse there.

Peatland stores are the dencest carbon stores in the world. Burning allows the habitat to be just as fruitfull as it used to be, jsut on a smaller area (due to forestry, building, and road networks). To suggest that grousemoors only have grouse on them is a sign of imbecility that we only see from the media, and the infirm, we have the largest number of wild birds including raptors on land managed for grouse shooting. No one in the industry agrees with breaking the law to allow for a gain on their shoot. Gamekeepers who engage in this kind of behaviour want locking up. Sadly that won't bring the lost birds back. Our raptors are precious, conserving them is more important than ever as they are facing threats from humans, climate change, habitat loss and more. It's SO sad. Crimes against birds of prey are not punished half as harshly as they should be. It should be a minimum of two years and/or an unlimited fine at the very least. Not ALL gamekeepers are like this, many gamekeepers appreciate the importance of birds of prey and are actively involved in helping other gamekeepers proof their stock and improving local habitats. It's those few that aren't that want rooting out and punishing, they want making examples of!.

As for the wildlife on the moors, how do they account for the fact that managed land has more wildlife of every kind than any RSPCA or RSPB land . The outcome for burning is to steralise the land which promotes growth and insects and habitat for birds. Where as chemicals destroy water courses and kill everything down stream as well. As for a fair interview , this was like a piers morgan style , interview everyone else at leisure then ambush people who have paid for a day or at work. @@GEMahler The UK population is indeed stable, stably low at around 350 pairs with localised declines and displacement, often due to persecution. The Peak District population adjacent to the Moscar Estate being a prime example. I'm glad you made reference to black grouse, as they are a species I observe regularly in North Yorkshire, County Durham and Cumbria and I'd say populations in these locations seem reasonably consistent in the several years I have been observing them. Besides, so what if goshawks (and foxes and mustelids, etc, etc) take a few? That's nature, a natural predator- prey relationship. Either way an illegal act has, in all likelihood, taken place here and the conduct of the '(cough, splutter) custodians of the countryside' in the film did their cause no favours either.

@@Teeb2023 no answers so more questions: Why does the 'hidden' camera move three times during the incident? Why are three jackdaws put in the trap, but only one remaining when the raptor arrives? Why does it take several minutes to kill the raptor (going by the movement of the sunlight on the hill)? Smells more than a bit fishy. Staged.
@ChrisJB4 жыл бұрын
@@turquoiseowl Not true at all. There is a well watched raptor watchpoint adjacent where goshawks are seen reasonably often. I speak from experience of course. And does it matter what species of hawk it is? It's still illegal. If it is indeed staged as you confidently assert, the man in question and the industry has nothing to worry about.

Seems like they were trespassing on private land and causing nuisance which is an offence. In addition, the person being filmed could quite easily be one of the trespassers. Just a normal anti- shooting trick and not a credible one.

And Luke Steele is a jail bird. Fancy having him as spokesperson. The film crew and antis illegally obtained a Forestry Commission key to access land in order to film.

I get the fact that killing endangered birds is bad and that those that kill them should be prosecuted but this is the most biased thing I have ever seen! It’s ridiculous that this can be made by channel 4 and all the people that see this and think that every gamekeeper kills endangered birds. Its just misleading for members of the public that do not shoot game as 99.9% of gamekeepers do not kill endangered birds. Although, those that do should be prosecuted.
