@@mattlawrence6077 Music doesn't have to and shouldn't have to be technical or super experimental as long as it elicits some kind of feeling and emotion. It's not about whether or not it's "skillful". The simplest songs can be the most compelling sometimes. Not to say that a really intricate, technical song can't be incredibly moving too. But to disregard the band and their music and pretend that you don't know it just because it's a little bit simpler sounding now is pathetic. Just because you don't like it doesn't mean they sold out. After what Spencer and the others have been through, it's insulting to suggest they'd sell out. They're different people now and it makes sense that they might not wanna make the same style of music anymore. Heaviness doesn't equate to a song automatically being good. A great song can be heavy, but if that's what you base your judgement of quality on then you're entirely missing the point of music as a whole.

But one of my favorite songs by them is "Writing on the Walls" (an oooooold ass song. Like really old for them.) and they played it the other day, I wanted to cry I was so happy. Especially because it was my first time seeing them live. So I was like half smiling, half crying, half singing lmao. Erase me has received so much unnecessary hate for illogical reasons. It’s honestly a fantastic album in which they push themselves in many new musical territories. Just because they went for a more melodic approach doesn’t make them sell outs. As far as the backlash for them not outwardly identifying as a Christian band that should not be a surprise considering disambiguation was filled with those types of themes. Just because they don’t identify as a Christian band doesn’t mean they don’t have certain beliefs individually as bandmembers. Even if some of them don’t believe anymore that’s their personal choices and it’s pretty safe to assume that things change within a 20 year span of a band and in life in general. In the end this album is going to have probably the most playback ability than all of them in my opinion and I’ve been listening since 2006.

I relate to this because i know the band wrote it as basically saying it's about drugs or someone in your life you can't get enough of (but wind up being to dependant on them) Yet i feel it's strong message about God and how we don't deserve what he gives us is very telling. and something most of us who care about faith all feel it at some point. and sometimes we do wish God would just erase us.

I could be wrong, but I think the writer of this song was actually conveying a very real condition of the heart of a christian during certain seasons of life. "Taste and see that the Lord is good." - quoted in Psalms. For a genuine Christian, experiencing the Love of Christ is almost like a drug, and better than anything. Sex, narcotics, money, you name it. However, the bad or "sinful" parts of the heart still desire other things apart from God. The more you feed that part of yourself the more you start to feel alienated from God even though the Bible teaches God loves you regardless. Sometimes, it's easier to just walk away from the faith completely. But after tasting of something so great and powerful, you begin to feel unsatisfied when settling for the lesser time and time again. I think that's what he means when he sings, "You're the only thing that gets me high and I hate it." He hates it because part of him still wants the better alternative, but he doesn't feel like he's worthy. "I don't deserve the life you give" which I'm assuming refers to the life of Christ which He gave on the cross. He wants to change, but feels like he can't. It doesn't seem to me like he's lost faith because in the end it's revealed that the song is a conversation between him and God which assumes he believes that God exists, otherwise why talk to him? But like I said. I don't know if that's what this song is about. Just some insight.

Then they have a chorus of woah-oah-oah-oah-oah. Go back and listen to It's Dangerous Business Walking Out Your Front Door and compare the song structure both instrumentally and vocally to this.

Yes I did I grew up on their music man I have been listening to them since Acts of Depression/Cries of the past era and honestly I love their evolution, but I guess that's because I am more diverse when it comes to musical tastes. Also your comparison is not even fair, in this case they clearly went for a completely different style. If you don't enjoy their new direction I am ok with that, but saying this sucks just because you can't keep up with "The Changing of Times" is not a correct assumption. This may suck in your opinion and I respect it and value it, but I honestly think it's a refreshing direction and a nice switch from a genre that has mostly died out and said it's part.

From Mongolian rock music like Altan Urag, neofolk like Heilung, Industrial like Minisrty, Mathcore like The Number 12 Looks Like You, pop music like Adele, classical piano like Chopin, electronicore like Fear And Loathing in Las Vegas, etc. This song is lifeless and lacks creativity. It's not just about how much he screams. There's been hundreds of bands that could make a song like this. Underoath was hated by a lot of people but they were never bland and lifeless.
