That brings back memories, the Okidata dot matrix printers were ones I worked on out of college. We often would replace that plastic button cover for the control panel, the membrane would get worn out/broken. It would come without the low grade board so that had to be moved over. Glad I don't do that anymore, they fell out of popularity but I hear about a few still out there being used just glad I don't fix them, I think I forgot most of the repair methods.

Very nice setup there with the four bins! Big thumbs-up for the -3- screwdrivers too.Changing bits gets fun really fast :) And regarding the small electric motors and transformers having to go as shred, well, I could be wrong but I think you've mentioned it at least once in every video.People must've been either fast-forwarding or not paying attention, tsk-tsk :)

Glad you like the set up. It's been working great so far. As for the small motors/transformers, I get it why only get shred for something with copper in it. We'll figure it out in time. I'm still working on a solution.

Just a thought but maybe you could work a deal with a scrapper that scraps copper - like maybe they could pay you a reasonable copper motor/transformer rate. If I was there, I'd be willing to pay about 1/2 of what I would expect to get for scrapping that item.

Shark, question do you see any hope for the stainless steel market anytime soon or is still going to be in the mid to low 30 cent range? Maybe I should ask this on your weekend talk show? It has just been setting there for ever it seems. I know it's been there for 18 months at that price.
@sharkscrapper2 күн бұрын
I see nothing that would cause a surge in stainless.

sometimes when im bored i do check resistors for gold (if its there, it will be on the inside of the cap, and they have 2 caps) ive never found any from 80's boards but if you take apart anything from the 60's (that had tubes on it), those will sometimes have it. theres not a lot of gold plating on them but some of them do indeed have it. its worth checking if the board had other components with gold, like gold legged transistors for example. where there is gold, there is sometimes, more gold.
@sharkscrapper4 күн бұрын
Older boards can be especially interesting for gold recovery, thanks.

Forgot to add that my yard allows a little steel with cast aluminum. Their mills are good with a small amount, I'm still trying to figure out that threshold so I tend to point out things like those steel bushing to see if they are okay or if it's too much. Smacking with a mallet can work too for small pieces like this sometimes, maybe a bit messy but fun.
@sharkscrapper5 күн бұрын
Any time a hammer is involved it's fun 🤣 It's good to have those conversations with your yard. It shows them you want to learn. They know you'll make it easier for them and get more consistent quality scrap from you.

Its ok sharky we get it you dont have to scrap everything.😂 Transformers included. It pains me that my aluminum motors go as shred. No dirty aluminum for me at my yard.... Its clean or shred.😢 Also thanks for spending time tearing down an oddball thing thats always fun to watch!

That clip is not stainless, its just an alloyed spring steel that has a nickel plating.
@sharkscrapper17 сағат бұрын
You raise an interesting point. The bottom line for a scrapper is do you put these in stainless or shred? Since "spring steel" is not a category most yards would use to differentiate materials the average scrapper as two choices, stainless or shred. Without analyzing the material or having the build parts list the average scrapper has no way of knowing for sure. Stainless steel is among the alloys included in "spring steels." So we're back to what bin to put these in. Little to no magnetic response is a common way to differentiate shred from stainless steel. Having said that, some yards can be very picky about how they define stainless steel. Bottom line - without analysis we don't with certainty what it is. Unless of course you used to build these and have the specs on the parts.

What the??!! Dude! Don’t you know small motors are valuable because of the copper in them?? I can’t believe you haven’t learned that by now! Just kidding😂 I’m sure there’s a yard relatively close you can save up to make a trip for those odd things and cash in when you find one along the way to somewhere. 👍 Edit: or maybe there’s another microscrapper that would pay to take them apart for himself.
