Thanks mate some great recommendations here for the spooky season. As for Ghost Watch, the main man is Michael Parkinson or Parky as he's affectionately known. He's a much beloved British television interviewer, has been around forever and has literally interviewed them all. The rest of the cast are all famous tv presenters too. That's what made it such a special event at the time. It caused massive outrage the night it was aired as it was presented as a true live event on Halloween. Just brilliant!
@soarproject8724Ай бұрын
Love the recommendations! I’ll pass the baton and give you one. Event Horizon is one of the best I’ve seen in regards to space horror, literally non of my friends or family talk about it, but it’s amazing especially with Sam Neil.
@oliverholmes-gunning5372Ай бұрын
A few points to add about Ghostwatch. It's actually still pretty famous (or infamous) to this day in the UK, though somewhat less well-known (outside of real horror aficionados at least) in the rest of the world I guess. The excellent cult anthology series Inside No. 9 (which I highly recommend to anyone who hasn't already watched it, even non-horror fans as a lot of the episodes are comedies or dramas too) did a tribute episode to it, Dead Line, for Halloween about 10 years ago which very much revived it in the collective mindset in the UK at least. For the record “that old news anchor guy” is Michael Parkinson, a legendary British talk show host (roughly analogous to David Letterman or Dick Cavett for Americans I guess) who had never to my knowledge appeared in a work of fiction before. That's one of the main reasons why Ghostwatch succeeded so well in convincing people it was real at the time (which was 100% the intention, it was a deliberate hoax like Orson Welles' infamous War of the Worlds broadcast), all of the people in it were extremely well-known talk show hosts, children's TV presenters, sports commentators, etc, who were all playing themselves as though they were hosting an actual reality show investigating the paranormal. As for the rest, I've seen all of them except Starve Acre (which I will definitely check out as I love The Witch), When Evil Lurks (it's been on my list for a long time), We Are Still Here, and Deadstream (which I've never even heard of, will definitely also check out). Glad to see a fellow House On Sorority Row defender, it's pretty much universally panned in my experience but I love it personally (I used to watch it as a young teen and had a major crush on the final girl lol), it's my favourite underrated 80s slasher alongside Sleepaway Camp. The 2009 remake with Carrie Fisher also has some decent moments and is one of the more underrated 00s slasher remakes (alongside the Platinum Dunes Friday the 13th remake and Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake and prequel which I will defend to the death no matter what anyone says), but doesn't match the original for sure. Session 9 is another banger, the reason it didn't receive as much attention as it should have is because it had the misfortune of being released on the same week as the 9/11 tragedy which understandably overshadowed it. And Haunt is so insanely underrated, I have no idea why that one isn't talked about more, it really harks back to the Scream/Final Destination glory days of teen slashers in the 00s. Speaking of Deadstream I'd recommend Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum which is basically the same premise and one of the more underrated K-horror movies out there. While we're on the subject of found footage I was actually making a list of some of the more underrated examples of that subgenre the other day for an article I'm planning to write- I'd highly recommend The Borderlands (often called the Wicker Man of found footage), The Dyatlov Pass Incident (which shows a surprising amount of restraint in the setup and has a neat little twist), Frankenstein's Army (amazing creature designs in this one, and an absolutely flawless execution given the low budget), The Conspiracy, Be My Cat: A Film For Anne (amazing no-budget thriller, it was uploaded by the director for free on youtube too), The Sacrament (solid offering from a pre-X/post-House of the Devil-era Ti West), The Last Horror Movie (fans of Man Bites Dog and Henry Portrait of a Serial Killer will really appreciate this one- fyi it's the 2003 movie, do not confuse with the 1982 movie called The Last Horror Film), Exhibit A, The House With 100 Eyes (be warned, this one's pretty extreme), Digging Up The Marrow (if you enjoyed Frankenstein's Army or The Conspiracy you'll like this one, and vice versa), Antrum (more of a slow-burn, arthouse-type deal; not for people who want instant thrills or clear answers), Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin (I'm not a fan of the franchise generally but this one's actually pretty good) and Hell House LLC Origins: The Carmichael Manor (easily the best of the Hell House movies).

Contrary to someones previous comment about Michael Parkinson, he was most famous for being a chat show host. His show Parkinson ran for 541 episodes between 1971 and 2007. The other main presenters, Sarah Greene and Mike Smith, were famous for presenting several television programmes including children's television, and were married in real life which lent an authenticity to their performances in Ghostwatch. Craig Charles was/is an actor who starred in a hugely successful sci-fi comedy series called Red Dwarf. The reason it deceived so many viewers is because the three main presenters were essentially doing their usual jobs.

I will check out The Deep House, Starve Acre I did make an attempt at but wasn't in the right mood for a slow burn and meant to go back to it but you lost me at The Witch comparison thus I found that to be one of the worse I've ever seen period. Session 9 like you saw it when it came out and have recommended it to friends. I thought I had seen Lake Mungo but the clips you show us implies I did not...lol So many Lake something horror films that I mixed it up with something Else so will check that out. A young Eileen Davidson makes House on Sorority Row a real pleasure. Haunt also a very good Slasher. Heard a lot of good things about When Evil Looks but I don't like reading my films so haven't checked it out. Well I haven't seen We Are Still Here so ......will check it out. The Deep House definitely sounds interesting. Personally, I wouldn't call Lake Mungo underrated. I hear it topping people's scariest movies ever list constantly. Then there are people like me, who watched it due to the hype, waited for something to happen, and then the credits rolled. I have a couple guilty pleasure ones I like that I haven't really heard anyone talk about before - The Task and They're Watching. They're Watching, especially, just because the ending goes so crazy that I fell in love with it.

You 'don't know' who Michael Parkinson is?? Wtf dude? He is/was 1 of our greatest talk show hosts ever, that's what made GhostWatch so awesome back in the 90's because they had Parkinson in the studio, playing it dead straight, so we were like "shit, this must be real, if Parkinson is hosting it!" And then you had Craig Charles and Sarah Greene reporting from the house, no wonder it scared people half to death 😂

It was way better enjoyed with a bunch of friends and some drinks... feel like we did the movie dirty by going in with completely wrong expectations. It was a goofy parody and had us laughing and rolling our eyes a lot, but not in the slightest scary. About as scary as Shaun of the Dead or Scary Movie :/
