Cults are really dangerous. A recent one is the Shakahola christian cult in Kenya that was lead by a lunatic evangelist called Paul Mackenzie. Hundreds of bodies are still being retrieved after people starved themselves, including children, to death. A father told a story of how he lost his wife and 5 kids to that church. Another lost his daughter and grandson who left a successful job as a airhostess and went to die there. 😢

Fear-based religions/sects are a scourge on this planet. I grew up terrified of the cult (clarification: it was a rather extreme offshoot of Pentecostalism) which my grandmother took me to. From age 2 through approximately age 8 or 9, I loved Sunday school. Then they started taking us upstairs to the adult services. People praying, shouting, screaming clapping frantically, some falling to the floor as the spirit of the Lord "moved" them. At age 15, I was moved ... to exit the front door of that place. Never looked back.

Most of my family are JWs, unfortunately. My grandmother got them into it long before I was born. I'm actually one of the few who isn't one. Even worse to them, I never believed in the first place, no matter how much they tried to force me. It's one of the reasons I'm glad I'm ASD and thus don't think the way most people do. I simply don't have the urge to conform or go on "faith." They didn't like all the stuff I pointed out that just doesn't make any sense, particularly since I was a little kid at the time showing up all these adults and making them stumble and stutter. Oh, and there's the fact that their stubborn adherence to their beliefs almost killed me. Twice.

It’s about going to a God who loves you and cares for you, and wants a relationship with you. I’m so sorry to the people who had situations in the church, where you felt uncomfortable, unsafe, abused and manipulated. My mom fell down the Mormon rabbit hole when I was 8/9. My dad had died the year prior and she was drowning her grief in spirituality. She'd been searching for a church family to be a part of before that as well, but none of them had spoken to her. My dad had been part of a local church and that's where my siblings and I went for most of our lives up to that point, but once the missionaries knocked on our door, everything changed. She became obsessed with this religion, to the point where calling her a zealot would be an understatement. She spent so much money on tithing and church "investments", it would probably make my stomach turn if I knew the real numbers. Easy 7 figures over roughly 20 years. Most of it at the beginning since she had my dad's inheritance, life insurance, and money from selling my childhood home. Once that ran out, she sent whatever SSI benefits she didn't need to keep a roof over our heads and food in our mouths to the church. Eventually, she did get a job because she thought that sending even more money would eventually mean we'd see monetary returns by way of "blessings". I don't know if anyone in the church ever tried to steer her in other directions, but probably not. Even if they did, she wouldn't have listened. She loved to claim that, since we had no living father, God would speak directly to her as the head of our household so everything she did was based on His words and His spirit (the Holy Spirit). It was rough living with her and I left as soon as I was 18. Never looked back. She would call me constantly, trying to tell me I was going to hell (the really bad one. In Mormonism there are, like, 3 heavens and a hell, you have to be like a mass murderer or unapologetic sinner to end up in Mormon Hell, since most people usually end up in 2nd or 3rd heaven by being average or above average good people. She said that turning my back on God (read Mormonism) constituted the latter so I was going to hell) I was going to die (either spiritually or literally) and other things to try to scare me or bring me back to her. Thankfully, my boyfriend then husband was there to help keep my head on straight or I might have listened to her eventually. I ended up cutting her out of my life entirely back in 2014/15 and didn't speak to her again until late 2021 when all three of my dad's siblings all passed away within 6 months of each other. And that was just to decide who was going to be taking over handling their estates and I made sure to keep the conversations purely business. She hated that. Kept trying to steer the conversation back to reconciliation between the two of us (read -- I give in to her demands without complaint) and I shut that down. Thank god, I had a good therapist during this time or I might have never made it through those phone calls. She died this last year right before Christmas and I think it was the best gift she ever gave me.

The only story I have is that on my day off, I had an old couple ring my doorbell. I open the door and the old lady starts saying about “Have you heard about Jehovah?” when she looks at my T-shirt and pauses. Guess who decided to wear a ‘Bendy and the Ink machine’ t-shirt that showed the Ink demon reaching out to the viewer and saying “Come join the Dark puddles”. (I swear I could not make this scenario up). To her credit, she carried on with her speech and finished with a ‘Jesus loves me.’ I said “okay thank you” before she and her husband left. I don’t remember him saying anything though. They must have told their friends that my house has a demon worshipper as I have not had anymore JW’s knocking on my door.

Whatever encourages you to treat others right is good in my book. However, lately my mom has been saying some things that sound less like typical catholic stuff and more like fanaticism. Things like "You have no free will; everything you do is God's decision." Which... honestly irks the hell out of me. Every day I try to better myself so I don't hurt others, and allow myself to communicate better with people. I have autism, so communication has been a lifelong challenge. I spent a lot of time trying to learn how to be better at communication and not being perceived as unusual. But now my mom wants me to believe that i had no say in any of this? That this was all God's will and I have no free will of my own? That... sounds so wrong to me, and I hope someday she'll stop thinking like this... but I highly doubt it. I don't typically associate Catholics as being a cult, but the things she's saying lately... it sounds cult like.

My daughter was cornered and verbally harangued by said pastor. (I didn’t hear about this until later). Things were going swimmingly for this Mega Church until the pastor came out of the closet. The lost all of their followers and the church was foreclosed. Years later it was purchased by a mainstream church at a significantly lower price. I’m in a large Christian church and in some places I’ve been, people are chill and kind and just use it as a guideline for living well and as hope in an afterlife. (Me included) but I’ve been to towns where it’s mostly Christians and so if there’s someone not of the same faith they act holier than thou, and as if it’s immediate hellfire for daring to believe other things. All in the same religion. It really is a matter of influence and it’s important to be aware of the dangers and to remember that YOU ARE NOT IMMUNE TO PROPAGANDA! Always be aware and questioning.

I live in the US's bible belt and honestly, I've never had a good experience with church groups or religious people in general, aside from my Grandmother. They were always toxic, extremely manipulative, heavily narcissistic, offensively judgmental, and generally insufferable. It's to the point of where every time someone tells me they're religious, I wince a little and distance myself from them.

The 'memorization of bible verses' one sounds a lot like AWANA, which is/was(?) a church program for kids where you have to pledge to the Christian flag, wear a uniform(like boy scouts), memorize bible verses and then get tested on your retention and the like. AWANA was the cultiest part of my Southern Baptist upbringing.

As some who has witnessed people of the baptist faith not only believe Israel is in the right, and encouraged their actions against the Palestinian people. It’s safe to say it could be considered a cult.

It's not a cult per se but a religious movement. It's called Zionism common (almost exclusively) a Christian or Judaic thing. Edited to clarify: all Christians, not just Baptists.

My mum's ex, still friend, ended up going AWOL last year and found himself in a hollistic frog cult. Yes, a hollistic frog cult. They would collect frog mucus and burn it on their skin during yoga. To cut to the chase, he was in such a bad state mentally that even the cult couldn't manipulate him.

I wouldn't say they all are cults today, but some of them definitely started as a cult. I mean just look at Jesus: guy is a religious leader, preaches the end of times, "he who's not with me is against me", "I'm the only way to heaven", etc. It was definitely a cult of personality

I was listening to Story 6 and went 'wait, this sounds like the church I grew up in'. Which is called Living Word Christian Center. I see that there is a cult for Living Word Fellowship that supposedly disbanded. There's a bunch of churches across the nation called 'Living Word' though so idk. But I know the one I went to definitely sounded like Story 6 and also tried to pray the gay away, did the pressing hands to foreheads speaking in tongues and people fall over convulsing shit and more.

Some cousins brought a friend to a family gathering(Christmas i think). They were Mormons and trying to convert the friend and badmouthed us for being Christians and saying we were going to hell. My mom over heard and said some things, nicely btw aside from saying some things that the Mormons do that is a big no no according to God's word. My mom asked the friend nicely if she would still like to join the Mormon church after what she said and pointed out how they were treating family who weren't Mormon? Friend said no. The cousins were piiiiiiisssssed.

Always baffles me how these groups always enforce stupid rules with suppression and shame and isolation and fear. Wouldn’t be amazing if there was something that united us in spirituality (which is an essential part of the human existence - body/mind/spirit), but did not force everyone to conform and isolate. I believe everyone in all religions is talking about the same thing but with different interpretations and then get on their high horse about their interpretations being the only correct way to believe. It’s nuts
