@@jismeraiverhoevenI live in that world. I've called myself a whore because I will do a lot to earn money. I wouldn't do anything like these people. If you think money is what these people are after, you're not paying attention. One of these stories is about someone winning 30K and losing it all. That's what is so sad about these gamblers. They aren't chasing money. They are chasing a "high". They aren't just bad with money. They need to "win". They're after the dopamine. If they were just desperate for money there wouldn't be as many stories of people winning big only to lose it all.

I worked at a casino for over 5 years as a cashier and I have had so many people upset at me because I stole all their money when they come up and turn in chips or tickets. The saddest story for me was a regular of ours and her husband would come in 2-3 times a week to have fun and play a certain set of slot machines that was always in front of the cage/cashier area. At some point we noticed they didn't show for a couple weeks and we thought it was strange but figured that they were probably on vacation. Fast forward 2 more weeks and the wife shows up and you can tell something was wrong. Come to find out, her husband died in a car accident and she was still devastated. It got to the point one night where she got so drunk she peed herself and passed out and fell out of her chair. She eventually got banned from the casino due to the amount of times she would just pee herself at her chair and crying. I don't know what happened to her ever since but I do hope she is okay.

Stories like this are the reason I think we need low-stakes casinos where you don't play with real money and just win silly plastic prizes like at the two-penny arcades. Sort of like methadone for gambling addicts.

I remember one story someone posted of how their grandparents had a retro slot machine and they'd play it as a kid and see exactly how rigged it is and never touched a real one. I've been considering whether or not it'd be a good idea like you said but yeah, I think so: those who couod be deterred are, and those who get addicted can get early intervention.

I used to live pretty close to the Canadian side of the Niagara area while in school a few years back. My parents took me to the city there for my birthday, and my dad took me to a casino and showed me around (not entirely sure why, but it was interesting). I used one of the machines ONCE and loved the thrill of it. I haven't done anything gambling-related since.

Well done. My dad was always employed in decent jobs, but never had any money, due to gambling. Depending on how his betting went, decided on how we ate each week. I've heard that one thing many gambling addicts have in common is hitting a relatively large payout very early in their gambling "career". If you go to a casino and lose your bankroll in a couple hours, or play the lottery several times and never win anything, it loses its luster (for most people). But if you happen to win some big prize, even a few thousand dollars, it sets an expectation that you're "lucky" and you're more likely going to keep trying to win again.

Some regulars aren't there to win money but because they genuinely enjoy the experience and are willing and able to lose what they bring in and have the self control to stop. However these are definitely in the minority. I used to go with a group would go to a local spot that had a $5 blackjack table on the weekdays that was right next to the bar. The goal was to bring in $50 and try to get 10 drinks before you lost the $50. Then take the bus into the city. Often if one of us busted we could hang around the table and still get the free drinks while the others were still playing

Spent a bit on the slots and on a 15 cent bet made $40ish. I genuinely thought I broke the machine and didn't understand how I won. Not a casino worker but ex-residential HVAC. So, part of being on the job is stopping by gas stations to refill and grab snacks for the day. The sad thing was, if you made routine visits to stations with digital slot machines, you could tell who the regulars were. And what's worse, based on their appearance, you could tell who was on SSI, disability or some other sort of fixed income. Once you realized that, you could learn when the checks deposited, because they were in on that very day gambling away the limited assistance they had.

While not a sad story, he did tell me that casino’s (at least in that area) would keep tabs on new and returning gamblers who come in. If it was their first time in, good, they would rig the games and give them a better chance of winning so they return, and when they do, they try to earn back as much of that lost money by making it harder to win.

If they had helped him, perhaps those kids would never have had those terrible traumas. If we only focus on punishment, we will never solve the problem. My first time at a casino I witnessed a really drunk guy lose everything at the roulette table and try to fight someone. No more than 10 minutes later I saw him on the ground passed out pissing his pants with security crowding around him. He was at least 40 years old and you could tell this wasn't his first time there. I asked the dealer about him and they said he went to ATM at least 4 times only to return to the table and lose everything. He had a wedding ring on so I legitimately felt bad because his family is most likely going to suffer due to his addiction that casinos support. I bet they offered him a couple free nights after losing all that money just for him to come back and do it again

Story 12 is one I experienced. When I was first assigned to a base in Germany back in the 80s, I was placed in a dorm with a roommate, until I was able to rent a place in a nearby village, who would spend his entire paycheck on slots at the NCO club and be totally broke until next paycheck. At least he had an issued meal card so he was able to eat.

I have a couple rules that I set for myself when gambling, and I stick to them *rigidly*. Rule 1: If I zero out, what is the absolute maximum I'd be willing to lose? Never put more than that in the machine. If I only have $5 to spare, that's all I put in the machine. Rule 2: I play for double or nothing. To use my earlier $5 example, If I zero out, oh well, I've only lost $5. If I get a $10 payout, I call it quits.

Hoooly fuck. I'm glad this shit is illegal where I grew up. Or, well, the state owns a few casinos _(I think three, one in each of the three biggest cities in the country)_ where you can't bet too much and you can't lose too much, and all the earnings that don't go to pay those who work there and into upkeep of the places goes directly into care for addicts of *any* kind - drug addicts, sex addicts, gambling addicts or whatever. I think that's the best way to keep gambling "clean" and I'm 100% behind it.

Online casino worker: I joined a table of speed blackjack and at the point where I was revealing the dealers card one player started writing threats in the chat, I mean, the players had good odds, but one player decided to split 10's and got too many on both sides after hitting, and guess what, those cards would've made the dealer bust, yet the dealer got 21 and everyone lost. And that player I mentioned lost it, cuz he went all in and he needs that money for living and said he would off himself. I reported him and kept doing my job while advocating that it's not a good idea and he should've been responsible with his expenses. So he left the table, a bit later two guys came and eventually closed the table, once the cameras were off I asked them if it's about what just happened, they said no, they were there to just change the camera. Honestly, was scared that I did something wrong, but never got anything about what happened after.

I went to the Casino like once in my live. Last time I checked there was a ban on gambling in a casino within a certain area from where you live in Germany, to avoid stories like those to happen. idk if that was lifted at some point and tbh I'm not really interested as I rather stay away from gambling entirely.

When talking about people dying in a casino….reminds me of working at a major manufacturer. The saying was, no employee ever died there. No matter if your head was smashed like a pancake, they would say that they had a pulse as they loaded you up into ambulance. People always were “alive” when they left company property. Thankfully I never had any firsthand experience with a situation like that while working there

I worked at a casino as a slot attendant so had free roam of the floor. I saw a lot of things; people peeing in their seats, counterfeit money, but the most worrying thing I saw was this couple wheel in their extremely disabled (as in there was no way he was enjoying, if even aware of, these experiences) son about once a month to gamble for a few hours.

I have always been a very disciplined gambler. I am a drug addict, so I can definitely relate to the feeling of sheer desperation these people feel. If I am gambling and win $40 I can very easily walk away. I understand the addiction, but I can't understand the addiction to gambling. It's cool to win a couple bucks, but I could never spend every dime I had gambling. To be honest people go to much more desperate measures than us drug addicts. I have been clean for two years, and I graduate college with honors in about a month. Never give up, you can achieve anything you set your mind to.

I’ve been a dealer for 8 months now and I already have a sad story. This man would come in and he wanted to bring his stepson to the casino to spend time with him. He is a good man and despite being a very sore loser especially when he bets large amounts of money, I love having him around. One day he shows up clean shaven, I don’t question it but he always had this long goatee so I thought it was strange. The next week he loses a $300 hand of Pai Gow and says “I think this is my stepson putting a curse on me.” My supervisor asks him what he’s talking about and he tells her that his stepson died the week prior. This was the first time we heard about this and to say the least we were very shocked. I had just met his stepson not that long ago and he was a very nice guy and now he’s dead. He was 39 years old and had a heart condition, he had a heart attack in his hotel in his stepdads hometown. He shaved for the funeral.

One very slow night while I was dealing in High Limit a slot player was motioning and asking for someone's assistance in a very calm demeanor while still playing his machine. Since myself and the other dealers and floormen can't leave our assigned area and it didn't sound like any kind of emergency we told them to hold on as our Pit would be back shortly. Upon the pits arrival and walking over to the man, who's still playing his machine, he finds a nonresponsive man on the floor next to him. The man had apparently collapsed while playing his own machine. Our on staff EMTs resuscitate the man shortly before the fire station EMTs arrive. The man gets up, sits back down at his machine and continues to play, denying any further medical assistances. Still the craziest display of udder addiction I've seen.

Most od the players was workers of the shipyard nearby - cheap drugs, cheap beers and shit like this. Iv seen plenty of guys burning whole monthly paycheck on just one night, sometimes just on couple of hours. I will never forget their empty look and questions they Ask themselves "what will I tell my wife?" I worked there just a couple of months and I have gambling allergy since that time.

Gambling addiction has seriously destroyed lives and ruined marriages and broken families apart. We have a family in our larger family that ended up divorced because the husband/father got so addicted to gambling that he was losing all of his paycheck & had been taking out his pension money for quite a long time, and he was about to lose the family home all due to his addiction. His wife had to divorce him to protect herself because she is older & not well and didn’t want to be homeless with no ability to care for herself. He has no interest in stopping.

Story 1: gay couple got in an arguement in their room. Security got involved. As we were discussing the incident with them in the hallway, one stands up, runs down the hall into the staurwell amd yeets himself over the edge falling 9 stories. . . He was alive long enough to regret every decision he'd ever made in life upon hitting the ground. He died. Story 2: respond to a noise complaint. Enter the room. 8 month old child is crying, no parents in the room. We contact the hotel manager. I am holding the child. It stops crying and goes limp. I tell the emt. We roll paramedics. The baby is declared dead on the scene. It had a 108 degree fever and cause of death was deemed dehydration due to illness. No matter what ppl see on the casino floor, nothing is worse than what goes on in the towers.

I recently checked into a Northern California Indian Casino/ Hotel for an event at the local fairgrounds. I reserved my room for 1 day. I enjoyed the event and went back to the casino. I liked the whole ambiance and asked to keep my room for an additional day. No problem. While walking the casino floor, I saw a lady in her mid 70’s feeding a video slot (reminded me of the folks in this video), next to her was what I assumed was a young relative in the early 20’s. The young one was stricken to a gurney and clearly had serious CP or similar affliction. Unable to talk and just stare around at the casino ceiling lights. Apparently, if you feed them machines they’ll make a space available to assist your needs. As for me, a $10 gambling credit per day voucher was part of my accommodation. I gladly lost those each day and that was it. I quite enjoyed the many bars and restaurants, but mostly the bars.

Addiction isn't by coincidence and only on terrible choices. These venues are designed to play on every fucking instinct a human has to draw them in. From how the slots are placed in an almost maze-like structure, to lights, sounds and anything else that'll make someone physically addicted through dopamine hits. They have people to research which sounds and tricks that has the highest probability of keeping them playing. I feel bad for people that get addicted this badly to gambling in the same way I feel bad for people with a drug addiction or eating disorder. The power is within them to change but it's definitely easier said than done.
