I was trying to understand the difference between brakes and the spool tension knob and you explained it very well in this video. Thank you!

When should you tighten the brakes and when should you have the least brakes applied?

Some of the old style round reels do have a rudimentary 2 pin centrifugal brake inside. They can't be turned off you can remove one or both of them but when they are installed they are on.

I love my 13 fishing baitcaster too. It casts further than either of my spinning rods without me even thumbing the spool on the fall. Such a nice reel. Doesn't backlash easy. It's my only casting reel currently, so I'm doing all this research. Braking system is critical when choosing a reel. I don't like when you have to remove the side plate to adjust the brakes and the side plate isn't attached to the reel. You lose that plate you might as well buy a new reel. On my concept Z it hangs and is still attached when it's removed and out of the way for a brake adjustment. I might buy another 13 fishing reel. Ain't broke, ain't gon fix it. Tight lines

Which should be adjusted first... the tension or the brake? Also, how do I know how much brake to apply?

Some round reels have pin brakes that are accessed by removing the spool.

These days you will also find centrifugal brakes that are externally adjusted and look like a magnetic system. They usually work by allowing you to move the metal ring which the brakes rub against in and out.

your round baitcaster should have centrifugal brakes
