If we view these as an either or option, the worst of both options leave society handcuffed. The beauty is in the tension of seeing your self as an individual with goals and boundaries, but also as a piece of greater whole. There are time to be self defined, but the greatest form of self-actualization is recognizing and engaging in interdependent relationships.

Same here.I came from a country which has strong collectivism culture, they also think individualism is so selfish.... They keep judging me I am a selfish person after I lived and studied abroad and got influenced by individualism which teaches me how to take care of myself first.

I'm an individualist first and foremost because the only one looking out for my own well being is me. But, I will treat others with dignity and respect but on an individualistic scale. People are not the same.

This discusses Collectivism and Individualism from a team dynamics perspective. That barely scratches the surface of the implications of these two different mindsets. The study is SO much deeper than this and a full study demands a study of the entirety of human history. Simply change the title of this to "Understanding Collectivism and Individualism in Business Team Dynamics"

Indeed. However, many Individualists in fact work well in teams and many Collectivists don't. In my experience, they aren't correlated and the lack of correlation is in no way ironic. For example, I am an individualist and am well known for being a "team player" in business, am a good facilitator of collaborations and my need/want for accolades (in keeping with the discussion from Tayo) has waned more and more over time. I know LOTS of Collectivists who do not play well. Who dominates conversations OR are overtly silent and sullenly so. People recognize and act on humanity's interdependency regardless of the mindset of Collectivism or Individualism. The application of Collectivism vs Individualism is frankly, IMO and experience (which is not short or light) in the context of team dynamics, be that familial, scholastic or business, is misplaced. Thelonious Mac posted a quote from Ayn Rand that is far more apt albeit only able to redirect the application of these terms in the right direction.

“Collectivism means the subjugation of the individual to a group-whether to a race, class or state does not matter. Collectivism holds that man must be chained to collective action and collective thought for the sake of what is called “the common good.” ― Ayn Rand Geopolitically speaking, the term collectivism is primarily used to refer to collectivist forms of government like communism and socialism. Collectivism is anathema to Americanism which is highly individualistic. Individualism is one of the primary tenets of western civilization and is given credit for helping the west (as you say) ACHIEVE as much as it has. The interesting thing about such achievement is that it typically moves society forward far more rapidly than collectivism. Still, even though we are individualistic, we OBVIOUSLY work in groups. Groups of individuals come together to achieve goals with individuals given specific responsibilities with a single individual taking overall responsibility for the success or failure of the group of individuals. “...Rugged individualism, derived from "individualism", is a term that indicates the ideal whereby an individual is totally self-reliant and independent from outside, usually state or government, assistance. While the term is often associated with the notion of laissez-faire and associated adherents it was actually coined by American President, Herbert Hoover, who presided over the emerging Great Depression. “ Leonard Pekoff In our on going cultural battle with collectivist ideologies like Marxism, Socialism, and Communism, the word collectivist fell out of use in favor of those other terms. “...Collectivism holds that the individual has no rights, that his life and work belong to the group . . . and that the group may sacrifice him at its own whim to its own interests. The only way to implement a doctrine of that kind is by means of brute force-and statism has always been the political corollary of collectivism...” Ayn Rand Again, collectivism is a highly anti-American point of view. RACISM is a form of COLLECTIVISM by definition. RACISM declares that my personal characteristics are due to nothing more than the race that others ascribe me to, primarily based on nothing more than the way I look, and equally disgusting based on a presumed shared body chemistry, again based on nothing more than the way I look. Interestingly one of the greatest values of Americanism is the nuclear family. “...A nuclear family, elementary family or conjugal family is a family group consisting of two parents (a man and a woman) and their children (one or more). It is in contrast to a single-parent family, the larger extended family, or a family with more than two parents. Nuclear families typically center on a married couple which may have any number of children...” Once again we have contradiction. America values rugged individualism, individual achievement, individual responsibility, but we also value the family greatly, which is a collective. Our individualistic society relies on the strength of the nuclear family collective, which is why so many of America’s domestic enemies and detractors attack the idea of the nuclear family in general. The nuclear family is a small group with an individual HEAD OF HOUSEHOLD, which is where the individual comes in. Each member of the family plays an individual role. There are many things that I worry about like the state of black people in the United States. I believe we suffer from negative group dynamics and that if we can instill western ideas such as individualism and individual responsibility into our culture, we can defeat many of our social problems.

Excellent post, spot on. I am quite sure that you could posit the same sentiments in another paragraph using white people as a foil and nail that too. We share so much more commonality than differences. Sometimes I think the incessant contrast of differences and complete absence of thought about commonality, among Collectivists, is them trying to hide from the very foibles you are pointing out.

I can with 100 percent certainty that I am a bit of both. Growing up with- in a large immediate and extended family I was thrusted into working collectively to accomplish goals just to survive everyday living. It was not until I was in middle school that I started to achieve individual goals that segway into adult hood. Having both collectivism as well as individualism in my life most definitely helped with job prospects and career choices.

However, life and especially a career as a military officer (and all the brain-washing that's required to become one) has taught me we must have Unity. 1:25 Well i would name your Description of Individualist "Egoist". Individualists do form and act in groups when needed, but they are more like cooperations to achieve a common goal. Everybody works together to achieve that goal for their own reasons, not for the group or because of peer pressure. *The group is just a tool to get shit done better, not everybody a tool to make the group better.*

@@crazycasy Spending other's money or having visible greed or even the act of being financial parasite is disdained in the east as well. While helping others is viewed as a virtue, asking for help is viewed as selfish and greedy. Collectivism is not always about sharing and equality like communism, it's also about not giving other people trouble (aside from strict formality).

Thanks for the video and for articulating this concept. Yours is a refreshing perspective that I appreciate. I think In social settings I can't help but act like a collectivist. Like I'm compelled, or compelling myself into the mindset. "These are my friends", "This is my family", "Would that group accept or reject me?". I'm happy to see myself belonging to certain groups, and I can't help but see the world as a collection of groups. Do you think there is a role for each theory, at the same time, in a successful society?

This is the fundamental core to all of the issues today and yesterday. If everyone put the time and process that it takes to understand this, we wouldn’t be so divided. Earlier generations emphasized in this, and made sure to reference to it regularly to steer people into thinking about it. This.... is the missing link the collectivists do not want the masses to focus on...

One of the great books on this issue is the book "Out of Step," the autobiography of the individualist philosopher Frank Chodorov. What makes Chodorov's analysis superior to that of von Mises and others who consider themselves libertarians is his recognition that there is a just distinction between those produced, tangible assets rightfully considered to be private property versus natural assets the individual control over which is rightfully considered a monopolistic privilege requiring a payment of the market-determined rent to the community.

It's so interesting reading all the views in the comments. I guess I'm an individualist? Not exactly by choice, I'm a Brit so a westerner and live alone, unmarried and a handful of friends and I socialise well but always find it hard to maintain any kind of network. However I love my family when we talk on the phone or they visit, we help each other out and the bonds grow deeper as I get older I think and enjoy spending time in groups on chatrooms or discord, it feels like a tribe or with volunteering it's a feeling you can't replicate by yourself , it's awesome ^_^. I'm also a creative and fairly smart individual and capable of a lot if I take people out of the equasion when I need a problem solved or have an idea I want to follow through with, I'm slowly pursueing my own road more and it's going well! However the downside is you have to do everything by yourself all of the time and that is hard sometimes, a few text messages or a phone call simply won't help when you need assistance and can't juggle it all alone . So that's a downside :\

Nicely put. It's all I've been thinking about for years. Conservatives are actually the better ones. They don't ask for anything, they don't want the world to change for them, they work hard, appreciate the small things and care only about really important stuff. Socialists are lazy and jealous, and see everything through a subjective lens. "Everything means everything therefore everything". People like this can justify anything, simply by refusing to acknowledge an intellectually legitimate critique of their acclaimed position in any debate. I've often found myself having to reinvent the wheel for people just to prove that wheels exist. It's really tiring.

The ethical code of Individualism created by Ayn Rand. She achieved what the enlightenment had not. Especially through her groundbreaking work of concepts and the mind's faculty of unit economy. Individualism is not isolationism, the opposite is true because individualism recognizes the requirement of the trader principle, it does so placing the emphasis on voluntary action and the division of labour. Not third party interventionism. Thanks Tayo. I'm glad you engaged in this topic.

I came to realise, painfully, that unless you are able to carry your own weight as an adult, you are a leech sucking the strength of the others and ultimately bringing down everybody. Being a witness to the sinking of a decrepit "real socialism" society did help. Unless you take ownership of your goals and make you and only you accountable for your success in reaching them, unless you at least try continuously to be more efficient and more useful in what you do to make other people's better and thus to earn their support, you are part of the problem, not of the solution, for yourself and for the rest of your community. We are all social beings and can only live in communities. We all need to work together. The real difference is in how we define our solidarity with our group: whether our solidarity is based on identity and privilege, or whether it is based on shared (or complementary) goals, values and interests. The first type encourages stability in suffering and waste of resources down to survival levels, the latter one leads to tensions, dynamism and sustainable progress.

I'm an individualist, I like to step up ,take control, be the best at things. But I think to some extent my Dad wanted me to be collectivist as well, often stated a lot about "how would that affect our name" or "think about your grandmother, stop being selfish" yet at the same time dad wanted me to achieve highly also. So i think even though people think they might be one or the other, I think most people will have a mix of both to some extent :)

Collectivism works well until you run into a family member that’s willing to disown you because of disagreement, like marrying someone of a different cultural background. Deep down all human beings are motivated by self interest and therefore whether or not they want to admit it even people who come from collectivist cultures are deep down individualistic because of the fact that human beings are selfish at the core. I don’t like socialism, therefore I don’t like collectivism.

Every culture has time when they’re individualism or collectivism. Those two are supposed to balance each other. For those individual worshiper in the comment section, the answer seems to be easy. But society start from individualism and was strengthened by collectivism. Collectivism was once protect humanitarian through many suffering and disaster. Now with a better life standards people are extremely inclined towards individualism. But I don’t know what future has to offer for humanity. So I choose both. People say that human nature is individualism. But I think human nature is capable of evolving. Or maybe something will eventually force the evolution like all other life form on earth.

Well, in America, the culture is definitely deeply rooted in individualism, especially amongst the major cities and the African American demographics. A lot of US have no choice but to be individualists. After all, Donald Trump is, "Individual 1." It's a rugged free enterprise of individualism for the have nots in a dog eat dog world. And the elites get all of the breaks, like a 50 yard handicap in 50 yard rat race. Whether your an individualist or a collectivist, no man is an island. But most individualists are like crabs, in a bucket that doesn't even need a lid on top, because they all consistently pull one another back down to the bottom.

@west of whatever I wish that I could understand your perspective and your point a little more clearly. After 2 years of making that comment, my socioeconomic concerns are still the same. Personally, I think that we have a people problem regardless of who our elected officials are. And since that comment, I have become aware of the stigma around mental wellness. Therefore, I still believe that our traditions and network for consumerism/ capitalism is not to be mistaken for collectivism in any sense. Maybe our system is closer to a form of socialism that has keep this country divided by ideological differences that goes back to events leading up to the American Civil War and then our civil rights movement and then Trump's populist movement. But our free market has always been fueled by cutthroat individualism (every man for himself) although our government only seems to interfere to negate monopolies or intervene to assist corporations that are too big to fail. Our system of government only tries to regulate our free enterprise and tax them on behalf lof the benefits they receive from capitalizing on our essential and established infrastructure. What I really want to point out is I believe that we are in a humanitarian crisis that is spawned from the stigmatized system of individualism (which is not at all regulated by our government). We have people today who doesn't even want our government to mandate CDC approved guidelines onto any part of the citizen's public life during a damn world wide pandemic. That is strong indicator of an uneducated democracy in our republic. Republics are governed by established law like our constitution. Democracy takes away the power of law, and gives that power to the majority. But the irony of our modern day politics is that the Democratic Party are our only representatives who are trying to amend our laws to benefit the people; and the GOP are the ones who refusing to respect our constitution, in hopes of promoting propaganda for their own personal profits. But still, there is the subject of personal agency, personal responsibility, plus the pursuit of happiness that the politicians never present as a debatable topic. In a nutshell, Americans have been dumbed down and numbed down to the ploys of propagandists- like Roger Ailes, the proprietor of Fake News. And our elected officials are powerless to do anything about it because of our unchecked free dumb and rites. I will go as far to say that it is unchecked narcissism and egomania that is fueling our ongoing COVID crisis that should have been curbed about 20 months ago (if our scientists and doctors didn't have to tiptoe around telling Americans, with their superiority complexes, that it is an individual responsibility to quarantine and not spread this highly infectious virus).

Individuality become valorise in this syterm we live because we have never experience the real sense of collectivity that could transcend the sense of oneself "myself,my family,my country,my colour.....etc" . one's success is depended to one's ownself so collectivity is waste of time in this modern era we live.

Giovanni Gentile was a collectivist and a socialist as well. His philosophy was based upon three principals that in which the state must be in control: Everything within the state, nothing outside the state and everything for the state. This was adopted by Benito Mussolini and was called 'Fascismo', the Italian word for Fascism. It was the prospect that the economy and production would be collective and organized by democratic and state rule. You may have missed at the definition of Individualism. These dictators are more fascist, everything being for the state and not for the individual. If you believe in individualism, no one misses out, because everyone is an individual. Watch this great video again or explore the works of History's great individualists, Classical Liberals like John Locke, Baron Charles de Montequieu and Edmund Burke.

Individualism derives from the rights of the individual and those rights stem from their right to life. A dictator does not motivate the people by pointing to every single one and asking them think about yourself? What do you want? It's always think about the people, the poor, the army, the king or god. A dictator infringes the rights of an individual to "server" a "greater collective". A person is only beholden to themselves and should hold themselves accountable for their wrongs and their rights. They have the ability to choose for themselves and be rewarded or punished for the results of the action. Anarchy is a kind of individualistic society but not one I agree with, you have to protect yourself from people that will infringe your right to life and etc etc. The government's job is that. To prevent another individual from infinging the rights of another. Or to at least punish them. A company cannot infringe your right to life, health, liberty, etc etc. You get the deal or they will face the law

You think Collectivism is better than Individualism because you are genetically designed that way. You cannot comprehend as spiritual concept beyond what your group master dictates to you, In your group you have no say about anything because your master dictates that he knows and you automatically believe him because your brain is wired that way and also you fear being shunned if you way to disagree with him. If you take a look at Individualist countries you will see they have human right and progress as compared to Collectivist Countries which have high levels of corruption and low levels of education. Most Collectivist Countries are run by dictatorship with mass killing of their own people who disagree. Everything they have is what we gave to them. They are not creative enough to discover or invent anything mew. Those countries also have the highest rates of child suicide. You can see many people from those countries immigrating to the west where as white people would never leave the west because people from those countries are extreme racists.

Why do we forget collectivism that happens on the right? The people who are typically the 'majority' who band together under mutual beliefs, opinions and the like against the 'minority'. Why are they never touched? It's always so bad when a group, a 'minority' that shares one thing in common, a thing that's heavily tarnished and demeaned and that has an overwhelming amount of them being left wing. Is it because the lines surrounding us (the 'minority') are easier to see due to us being easy to put into a 'box'?

I suppose because dangers associated with collectivism on the right are pretty obvious, and we're still often reminded of the past horror stories as a result of radical right wing collectives to this day. I consider myself an individualist and I love living in a society which is somewhat half way between individualist and collectivist (Italy). Having lived in countries that are more extreme at each end of the spectrum (UK and China), I find I quite like the balance here. People are fairly free to be themselves even when their identity, preferences and ideas diverge from the groups they belong to, but at the same time there is enough focus on tradition and family to create a good amount of emotional support and cohesion. There is no perfection. Here if somehow is, for example, gay or follows a religion that is uncommon, they will face some discrimination in certain environments. Nevertheless, their right to be whoever they are is protected by the law and most people will accept the fact that each of us is different.
