Idk if this is a hot take or not(maybe to OT fans), but the clone wars series was the best thing to happen to Star Wars in Star Wars history. I might sound biased since it’s my favorite era, but so much character development came out of that series that it brought me closer to the Star Wars universe. It also had the opportunity to come out during a time where Star Wars tv and movie entertainment was lacking. In terms of clone wars itself, Maul was the greatest thing to happen to that show despite how good it is.

In the Prequels, we were so hyped at him especially with his looks and lightsaber. We thought he was gonna be awesome but then immediately gets killed off. But here CW brings him back on screen and instantly gets the complexity we wanted and became one of the best fan favorite character in the franchise. @@tko930 Exactly. Because he didn't have a solid personality with his own ideas that could own a porpuse to make sense of the victory. Anakin had a goal. So did Dooku. Becoming Vader had a porpuse. Turning to the dark side had personal fuel and ideological basis for these two. Just like protecting the innocent and fighting for their freedom, oppressing the rebellious to keep them in line had their porpuse. Light or dark, the force was a tool fueld by whichever side that matched with the attitude of the respective approach. But Maul had no goal. He had no ideology. All he actually ever had as his own was power to use the force, and the lack of it to form his own life. And, thus, anger. Had he won, and found and killed Luke too, he would have just continued to suffer on a new level. The force couldn't free him through His victory. It had to be the enemy's.

One of the most tragic parts of their final fight is that Kenobi seemed to be trying to tactfully talk Maul down. He genuinely didn't want to kill him. Perhaps if there had been no Luke, no Chosen One, the two would have ended their days fighting together, instead of against each other.

The Jedi Council is deeply, deeply flawed. A lot of this comes from politics. The Jedi have long since began abiding more by the Senate and public opinion over the will of the Force. This is a common theme in George Lucas Star Wars, and why Qui-Gon refused to join the Council or often even cooperate with them. They are detached from their ways and have become warriors of the Republic rather than peacekeepers, following the Senate over the will of the Force. They have become completely disconnected from the people they serve, people who protest against the war regularly and are often neglected. They do not go and free slaves in the Outer Rim because it's outside Republic jurisdiction and they solely serve the Republic. This was preyed upon by Sidious to take them down. The bombing of the Jedi Temple puts this on display. Ahsoka was not even at the Jedi Temple at the time of the bombing, she was in a battle off world. Nor is there significant evidence against her at all outside of that. Yet the second there's any signs at all, the Council turns their back on her after years, too afraid of public opinion to listen to reason or hear her out. They capture her, expel her from the Order and assume she's guilty immediately. This even goes as far as allowing Ahsoka to be put up for execution by Tarkin. And then when Anakin finally proves her innocent (which requires a confession from the real culprit) and saves her life from the twisted politics of the Republic, they say "the Force works in mysterious ways" and that "because of this trial, you have become a greater Jedi than you would have otherwise". They don't show remorse for instantly turning on her the second things looked a little off, they just blame it on the will of the Force, of which was the very thing they didn't listen to during all of this. Ahsoka declines their offer to rejoin the Order, and leaves to forge her own path and eventually reconnect with the citizens of the Republic that the Jedi have become so distant and disconnected from. There's a lot more to it and others have probably said it better than I did, but this is all canon.

Literally the only ones who honestly loved Maul are dead. We know nothing about his father, but since he's never mentioned in Canon he's probably dead, and he is confirmed dead in Legends. His youngest brother Feral is dead, and Savage, his only real friend, was killed right in front of him, as was his mom, Talzin. All because of Sidious. Vader's life was tragic too, but at least he got a couple breaks and he died with his loved ones. Maul died in peace, but he died alone. I just hope that the guy got reunited with his family. Maul was a monster, but he still deserves something good to happen to him after a life of constant misery.

That was what confused me with 'Rebels' Maul. I genuinely saw care, if not exactly compassion, in his reactions to Ezra. I saw a certain kind of sympathy and honesty in his dealings with Ahsoka too. In fact, he never disrespected his opponents. But Ezra (understandably) didn't see how he could abandon Kanan and Sabine to the undead Nightsisters. I realised that, as well as most likely feeling that he had to 'rid' Ezra of his previous allegiances, Maul had been genuinely scared when those 'ghosts' started coming out of the cave. That’s what I thought too, Savage seems to be the only person in the galaxy that actually cared about Maul. Their relationship appears to have changed Maul as well, not necessarily for the better but it has. There’s a saying that you never know what you have until it’s it gone and I think Savage and his death opened Maul’s eyes at least a little. Maul was essentially alone his entire life and then suddenly this guy claiming to be his brother shows up and pulls him out the trash, gets him fixed up, and follows him basically unconditionally. And then Savage dies and only then does Maul realize what he’d had and now lost, which is why he seems to be searching for another apprentice so much. He now knows that he is cripplingly lonely without his brother. If he somehow had come to that epiphany without Savage dying he may have been able to be happy, train Savage right so he would be able to protect himself, and put an end to his former master for good. I always really liked this duo when I watched as a kid, now I wish we got more of their relationship progressing and even Savage’s POV on it.

What I love about Maul's story is how its the perfect showcase of how to do a Star Wars story that isn't centric to the Skywalker family, yes Obi-Wan is part of it but ultimately the majority of Maul's story occurs outside the main story, and I think it is through characters like this in which the future of the franchise is best.

oh boy. oh BOY do i have some feelings. i love Maul with my whole ass heart. tar wars has always been about tragedy and about how the galaxy is not kind and very few are allowed actual lasting happiness. Maul's story began with tragedy and he was never allowed to grow from it. This hurts on levels that I can't even put into words. I sometimes think about what might have happened had he been taken by the Jedi. how he might have thrived and flourished and maybe known some kind of peace and comfort. His is a character who never had a destiny. i read a post on tumblr that said he died because he tried to put himself back into the narrative, which is such an interesting take. he has lived through things that no mortal should be able to survive, mentally and physically, he's powerful courageous and strong... he *belongs* in the narrative. but dear gods, i dont care if he's done terrible things, *everyone* deserves some measure of comfort and even a *chance* at redemption. you've basically, in this glorious video that i am *not* ashamed to have cried most of the way through, summed up my entire TEDtalk on Maul. I love him and his tragedy and i honestly just want to give him a big hug and a mug of cocoa. i just. have a lot of feelings.

Another thing to add is that Maul was probably jealous of Ezra and Kanan's Master/Padawan relationship. Maul saw Kanan as a direct threat to him connecting with Ezra because 1) Kanan didn't trust him with Ezra. 2) Kanan was Ezra's master while simultaneously having a father/son dynamic with him. Maul never had a healthy Master/Padawan relationship with Darth Sideous unlike Ezra and Kanan. That's why Maul directly targeted Kanan multiple times to either kill him or blind his eyes. He thought that by getting Kanan out of the picture that he would have claimed Ezra's loyalty. But like you said in your video, he doesn't know how to form healthy relationships because of his past with Darth Sideous. He doesn't know that by hurting Kanan, he is simultaneously making himself a threat in Ezra's eyes. He is basically doing what Darth Sideous did to Savage, but at least Kanan survived then. Like that scene where he asked Ezra to come with him. Maul is definitely projecting himself onto Ezra, but Ezra actively rejects that narrative to Maul's face because he does have deep connections of unconditional love with his found family that he can't just leave behind. Exactly what Maul craves (unconditional love/support like Savage had for him) but doesn't know how to aquire that type of relationship in an healthy way. Maul was craving that type of bond, but his past clouded him to even creating those kinds of connections. But Ezra already knows the importance of those relationships because he was alone once like Maul for years. But because of his connections he formed with his found family, he knows those relationships are way more important. He learned to open up and heal from his own trauma. He learned its better to have people by your side than trying to survive alone. But because of Maul's traumatic past, he can't see the importance of being vulnerable and allowing himself to connect with others. He never learned those tools thanks to Sideous. Basically, Ezra demonstrated the importance of connections while Maul struggles with his need for those supportive connections yet not knowing how to reach out in a healthy way.

Interesting perspective. I used to see Obi-Wan as the reason for Maul’s lust for revenge, but seeing him as an outlet instead makes their dynamic a bit more interesting. I knew he hated Sidious, but I also felt like he hated Obi-Wan just as much until his last duel with him in Rebels. Dying on the planet of the one chosen to bring down the man he had this immense hatred for probably brought him some sort of peace. We need a what if story that shows Mail actually receiving the full vision he shared with Ezra. I would assume he’d have more motivation to want to win that battle against Obi-Wan.

Well what should have happened is something like that… him seeking revenge against Obi-Wan makes no real sense at all. He beat Obi-Wan in dueling multiple times, he killed his lover, and where we left him in Clone Wars he wanted revenge against Darth Sidius, not really worried about Obi-Wan at all. Then when he is hunting for the holocron and knowledge it brings he is seemingly still motivated to fight the Sith, for killing his brother and leaving him in a poor state, even if it is for selfish and evil reasons like revenge and gaining power and control. But suddenly he becomes a wack job and goes after Kenobi. What if instead of him going after Kenobi when he already was done with that he redeems himself trying to fight Vader or Sidius, thus hiding Obi-WAN’s location? Or he wants Luke to become his apprentice to fight Sidius and Obi-Wan has to fight him to steer Luke towards the light, removing the whole “he’s alive” rant or screaming “KENOBI” in the desert when he wants revenge against Sidius for killing Savage?

What if Maul was able to break his own mental blocks on relationships and see her as an equal rather than an apprentice and what if Ahsoka could put the past fully behind and allow her to see Maul's perspective as one who was privy to what was actually going on behind enemy lines? I feel like we would have gotten a modern take on what happened between Satele Shan and Darth Marr in the Old Republic where the two were able to have discussions on the differing philosophies of the Jedi and Sith in a civil way.
