I want to add something interesting that I saw a few years ago from the university of Milan, Italy, where they did a study on 'tail talk'. Dog was placed in a large box facing the only window, and cameras were recording the tail from all angles. The would parade a variety of people and things in front of the window, including his owner, friends, acquaintances, uniformed, strange dogs, cats, doggy friends etc...and what they discovered was, the tail actually has a language. It would do exactly the same thing when seeing owner, which is tail spins like a propeller or stranger, the tail only goes from centre to left wag. I wish I had a link to share this with you. I think you would like it. I wish the same study could be made with ears as well. :)

I watched Part 1 and Part 2 for the first time when we just got our puppy three months ago, re-watching them again today since I need re-learning all of these again! I think it's really easy to mirror people's feelings into our dogs' behaviours and it's just not the way to go. "Oh, they're just playing. Let kids be kids." "No, one of them is actually really stressed out". Really love your videos, it helps me how to be the best person to my dog

I just discovered your videos. New subscriber here ! Body language in dogs is so often missed because it is so often subtle. Humans don't recognize what the dog is "saying" until it has escalated into a problem. Thank you for making this clear. Dogs are the one animal on this earth that is genetically predisposed to want to be with us. The least we can do is attempt to learn their language.

Check out Australian Shepherds. Many are born with naturally cropped tails and nearly all of them have quite small ears: it is just part of the breed's characteristics. And if they had difficulty turning, they probably wouldn't make good herding/working dogs. :o)

These videos are awesome. A good understanding of dog body language could prevent a large number of dog bite incidents. As someone who has owned a 130lb Olde English Bulldogge and has worked with/had a fascination with large so-called "aggressive" dogs, I have found being able to read a dogs body language to be an invaluable tool. Thanks for the content.

I see a lot of this behavior in my schnauzer/poodle mix. She was bit pretty badly a couple years back and still has anxiety issues around other dogs (she tends to distrust and fear all other dogs now sadly). Great video to help me understand some of what she's going through. I will be interested in seeing some of this in her behavior when I take her for a walk tomorrow. She loves going for a walk, but almost as soon as we're outside, she starts whining, even when there are no other dogs around. She sniffs around at bushes and other places a lot, and I notice that her legs are shaking as she's doing this.

Many many dogs are overweight and under exercised. Dogs used to have a job in the past meaning they had something to do but like the horse a dogs job isn't what it use to be. Even way back in their family tree they had a job in the pack, they were needed and they loved their job. I have a service dog named Garth he's with me general everywhere I go save certain locations he's not a load too (court room) or environments that might endanger him and others. Even with that Garth and I go on 30-40 minute walks every day, play at the park (tricks), hike and or go to the beach every other weekend. When I am unable, too sick or in pain to play Garth is understanding and for those occasions he lays with me or chews his bone (deer antler). Advice to keep your dog happy, walk them, train them and play the earlier the better. Lead your dog. A lot of people don't understand that Garth is a very happy and healthy dog--he and rather dogs in general like doing stuff!! Be kind to your puppy socialize them, take them out to see new things, train them, play with them, pet them, talk to them in your normal voice, happy voice and bad voice (Micky Mouse for positive and Schwarzenegger voice for negative) please don't yell or hit your dog and let them sleep this will help them. Socialize puppy with other puppies and places, train them (command them like a two year old), play, pet and sleep. Ask your vet how much to feed them and what to feed them. Garth loves salmon and sweet potato from Merrick. Lastly walk in the morning before their breakfast, same with any activity wait for at least 45 minutes after eating before the stimulus. Never never play or encourage play after eating. Bloat or a turned stomach is a very common cause of death for dogs.

I find interesting how animals can tell the moods we are in. Not by learning the indicators of our behavior but by feeling our energy. That’s why we cannot hide behind our behavior and that’s why they get confused when we are not consistent. Animals are the best teachers.

So my mother has a small dog and I have a husky pup. The small ones is very protective and jealous meaning, my bigger dog is often barked at and nipped and in turn sometimes comes back a little too strong. They've never came out with bites or anything but I'm having trouble disbursing the small dogs aggressive behaviors and my big dogs instant reaction. I've tried distraction but he will not look or pay attention to anything else. We've tried the leash but it seems to make him more aggressive. Might I add this isn't something they always do. I've seen them play fight with good edicate and will see them sleeping together every night and most days. But at least once or twice a day when my mums home, they do that. Anyone have any suggestions?

These videos are really helping me understand my dog. Thank you! Just a question, when my dog is on a walk if she, say, sees a cat in the distance, she might lift her front paw and freeze, staring at whatever she is seeing, also if we call her she might freeze with her paw up. Is this negative? She just looks attentive and alert and we always said it was her 'Gundog paw up' like you see in cartoons. Also, when she meets another dog or human, she always collapses, wagging at their feet. bottom-up head down and curled up and tail wagging her whole body. Is this submission of just her being so happy to see them? If they stroke her she may even roll over on her back. Thank you!

First of all; thanks for making such informative videos for us to learn by. The visual "video clips" and narration including slow motion are most helpful. I personally don't respond well to instructors who read notes while showing the notes scroll past. No two people are going to read at the same rate. The exact parroting of what is scrolling (reading your written notes) is disruptive to me getting your message. I like to listen to your voice, while video is playing. But in general I think your very good presentations would be further enhanced if there were less showing exactly what your telling. Does that make sense? Keep them coming Kristin I'm learning from you and my dog lives better because of it. Many thanks

8:06 - there are many signals telling this dog is insecure about this situation however he continues to sniff the person and then escaped. In the previous video, another dog showed similar signals and attacked the toy eventually. How to react during such situations? Should I distract a dog by pulling him away as soon as I see a lifted paw? Or what? Edit: I found the answer at 9:01 - Yay! Escape!

A single ear held low, is often a tipoff that the dog is feeling a sore ear. examine usually for parasites or infection. a vet visit is safe. I look with illumination and magnification, but my dog is fine with me doing this. The safety of touching a potentially sore place depends on your training and the relationship, current mood with your dog. Have you noticed your dog sniffing your ears? this can be a good time to sniff back mutually.

I believe she said in the first video that a good way to resolve situations where one dog keeps pushing when the other isn't having it is to provide a positive distraction for the playful one so he disengages from the other dog 😊 I'm a dog newbie though so check the first video. I hope your pups will get along!

Well actually super impressed this is the first video in probably fifteen I have watched tonight and I'm just basically going crazy with all the misinformation... BUT... This video is right on pointI'm more than pleasantly surprised and help you keep making the videos I think you would find it very interesting 2checkout "Martin McKenna dreadlock dog man"his story will captivate you but the wealth of information that he came by and shares is a complete game changerbecause once you understand what your dog is trying to communicate to you you might realize that your dog is reading you like a book LOL but that's not a joke if you think about it some dogs can comprehend correctly up to 400 words/commands that a toddler would understand on top of reading body language being experts and dog etiquette and pack mentality being able to tell by a single scent without effort being able to tell if you are well or sick male or female how old you are where you been where you're going your mood if you're to be trusted if your dominant or submissive and the list goes aren't they can tell if you have a disease if you're going to have a seizure if you're sad dog is a most amazing creature once you just understand how to properly communicate with with them it is a world of blissand there's just so much misinformation out there some people say lip-licking is a sign of nervousness other people say is a comic signal some people say yonny is a relaxed state are calming sign while others will say that it is like them blowing you offshake their whole body like they are wet after experiencing something unpleasant like a scolding work being petted where they don't want her when they don't want for example... they understand micro-expressions moods volume of voice tone of voice even voice inflection and the difference in voicesand the very saddest thing in the world to me as if we can't get them to respond to us in a way that we think they should and we can understand because they're doing what we wantthen we punish them in one way or another neglect abuse taking him to the pound giving them away beating them just all kinds of horrendous things it's so sad because dogs want nothing more than to please you in every way they want absolutely nothing they expect nothing ever...the reward for them knowing all these forms of communication and having good dog etiquette and pack mentality is only one day this day to be taking in and accept it as part of the given a job within the pack hunting killing feeding with the pack and then sleeping with the back knowing that tomorrow you're only promise the same thing which is enough for i-dog everything else is a bonus that's my opinion the bonus part LOL petting working being rewarded etc those are all human things that we give to the dogs (or not) and that is what makes them domesticated the actual liking and needing and wanting to be part of a human pack. thank you for making this video again it is the best one I have seen not just today but wow... Check out Martin McKinnon dreadlocks dog guy I ran across him and everything has been two hundred percent better for my3 dog household ever since I used to think I was an amazing dog owner and I did all these great things for my dogs only to find out I was miscommunicated misreading misunderstandingthis guy was a identical triplet I think he was living in Ireland I can't remember and he couldn't read and he got made fun of a lot so he ran away I think he was 12 years old and he stayed living on the streets there for three years literally a pack of dogs I think it was six or seven took him in as their own and he spent the next three years on Street living in a pack of dogs where he learned truly learned all the forms of communication within the dogs the dog pack hierarchy the pecking order the communication dog etiquette everything I have three big dogs and I dug deep to try to figure out what all the sudden to me just came out of nowhere when my youngest dog began attacking my two other dogs after extensive research I thought I'd God this is resource gaurding but once I realized how and what the dog body language really meant and at the time of the incident and so forththis guy simply said do this that and the other thing which were all natural to dog packs and humans and many instances example once I knew what to look for in my youngest dogI kept an eye on her when she sewed showed those signs like the rigid body the hard stairs the whale eyes posturing or whatever and then applied simple dog body language and pack etiquette I'm respondingimmediately the first time I ever tried licking my lips you're yawning I was able to defuse a situation before it ever became one and I have been doing it for about a year now and it is worked 110% it blows me away I just didn't understand I wasn't being present and paying attention I thought it was coming out of nowhere so again mad props to you for this video please keep making them people need to know this information like I said it's not only a game changer it's everything... ♥️
