That dog is so lucky she landed with an owner who would not give up. Furthermore, that owner was willing to suspend her disbelief and have faith in the trainer. Mindset of the owner is at least 90% of the solution. Congrats to this team for being willing to change. Great video Tom.

What the " dog behaviourist" told this lady was " I can't read the dog's behaviour and cannot change myself ". Sadly an all too common result. Tom showed how to do this. Read the dog then give the owner what they need to calm and ressure the dog. I love watching the owners change and their dog following them in changing behaviour.

That’s exactly how my dog was. He is still suspicious when new people come into my house, but I am now easily able to calm his fears and let him know I got this. I would not have known how to do this before going for training with Tom . I’m very grateful to him.

This kind of analysis is what sets your training apart. What a treat for us viewers to see replays of Jersey's behaviors. Instead of seeing a "mean" dog, we see a confused and anxious animal who has been mishandled by people many times and now lacks trust. I learn so much every time I watch one of your videos, and hats off to your trainer who showed composure and helped Jersey, too.

Leash reactivity is a tough one to handle for inexperienced owners who have a large dog, I find the slip lead doesn’t give me the control I need but I’m hesitant to try a more extreme tool like a prong collar without proper guidance. I appreciate videos like this from you Tom, your help to the dog community is invaluable.
@PARoth2011

Tom has many videos on how to use the Herm Sprenger prong collar. You can buy one on his web site or on Amazon from a reputable seller.The prong is like the difference between power steering and manual on a car, it can be that dramatic. I have multiple dogs, let me give you 2 examples. I got a 6-8 yr old Bluetick Connhound who had been found, emaciated, on the streets and was at the shelter for 6 months. She had been adopted by a first time owner and returned. I asked the staff at the Humane Society to pick a dog for me and the gave me her. In the first 30 days I realized 3 things, she knew absolutely nothing, (not even housebroken), she absolutely would not respond to leash pressure with a slip (she would rather have choked to death) and she absolutely would not respond to food as a lure (frightened/anxious dogs will not initially respond to food for training.) I questioned everything I thought I knew about dog training and I’ve done my fair share at amateur levels. I kept thinking, omg, what did I get myself into? I watched enough of Tom’s videos to think ok, I’m going to try a HS prong. I got it from Amazon since he was out of stock and it came with rubber tips you could put on the prong ends which is perfect for very short fur dogs like hounds. I had never used one before and I was clumsy like any beginner will be but I did it anyway and experienced my first miracle. I gave a tug on the prong, nothing, I did it again and she looked at me in surprise and walked! By my side! I had been trying to get her to do it for weeks and she wouldn’t and then she did it within minutes with a prong. Now when she hears the jingle of the prong I use for my German Shepherd rescue who also knew nothing, the hound comes running wanting to do training too..and so does the Pitbull cross. They ALL come running when I take out the prong collar. That, my friend, is a freaking miracle tool to me 😂😂😂

This is a GREAT video explaining fear based aggressiveness showing the head up, the softer bark and attacking from behind. I’m the 4th home for my fearful, young GSD and she’s coming along based on everything I’m learning from these videos. NBDA! Huge kudos and sending ❤ to this owner for taking on this dog then getting the help she needed to be successful. They did a super job.

@Jessica Rana we moved back in September, so I'm not sure where to find a more balance trainer around us. So I've just been watching videos on KZbin and doing the best I can on my own. I did get a prong collar for him the other day, but only used it twice so far. It does help some. We also ordered slip leads and a different martingale collar. We have 3 dogs total. My reactive pup was in a bad situation before we got him. He is our rescue pup. He's not a bad dog. Based on what I've been learning from Tom and a few others on here, he is fearful. Our three pups, we got them as a bit older, so we missed the socialization period and trying to do it now but it's a challenge. I know 100% my other two pups are fearful. I'm doing my best though.

@@brandimcnally2349 For almost three years now I've been dealing with aggressiveness towards other dogs with my sweet and kind (to humans) Shepherd that I got at 10 months old from a woman who hit him with towels and spatulas. He was terrified and ematiated when I got him. Make sure that when your dog encounters another dog that he goes crazy at that you just keep moving along and get him out of there. Don't do what I have done and try to get him to heel or sit to obey you on the prong as an alternative to going crazy at the other dog he is looking at. I fear that my dog has associated the discomfort and choking ("pain"?) from the prong (which I DO use correctly and as compassionately as possible) that he experiences as he pulls and lunges toward the other dog with other dogs. Don't do what I did. Don't demand a heel or a sit. Try to keep a loose leash. Also, don't yell at your dog to do things (like "sit", "quiet" etc.). Just redirect your dog's attention and move along and get him out of the situation that makes him uncomfortable. Like his shirt says, "It's okay of your dog doesn't like other dogs". Just ALLOW your dog to get out of the situation that makes him afraid. Don't force obedience with the prong while he is looking at another dog. This video DOES give me hope though. And my dog is the sweetest dog you could ever meet... unless you are a dog! Then he goes nuts. And he's never gotten to play with any other dogs because I've had him since covid started and I'm afraid he will attack other dogs if off-leash. The mean woman I go him from said that he played so violently with his 5 GSD brothers that they drew blood. In fact, he had a minor wound on his hip when I got him. Disclamer: I have no idea what I'm talking about. That's why my dog is still reactive towards other dogs. There are 3 AMAZING dog trainers on here. Obviously this channel is the best and has helped me A TON... and also Robert Cabral and Joel Beckman (though German Shepherds are the one dog that his "reversal method" to stop pulling does NOT work on). Joel doesn't use prongs because he mentioned once that he has seen dogs associate the "pain"/discomfort of the prong with the dog he is looking at while feeling the prong. When Joel finally got a GSD on his channel he quickly learned that flat collars do not work on them, so he recommends Gentle Leaders for them. My GSD pulls like crazy on a Gentle Leader. Like a horse. I have to say that in the first couple weeks with a crazy pulling dog the prong is MAGIC. In fact, I think it only took 4 prong "pop" corrections on my VERY FIRST WALK to totally change my Shepherd. When I did (do?) use the prong, I almost never ever need to give him a correction, but, the problem is that he does get them when he goes crazy trying to get to another dog. When my dog wears the prong he is a different dog. Even if I am not even connected to it! Hopefully mentioning the only other trainers on KZbin who can even begin to approach Tom's level of magic doesn't disqualify me from the competition, cuz, God knows I need help! ;)

This provides additional ways to train in addition to the two obedience classes my sicx month old belgian malinois has already attended. Despite having dogs my whole life, i have been voraiciously reading dog training and psychology books lately given my little "maligator" has a mind of her own (extremely smart but obstinate) , and this one ranks among the best.

Thanks for all the great videos. People who admit they need help are the bravest. I’ve worked with a trainer in classes and individually for three years. I’ve seen people who just give up and walk away, it can be upsetting, but it’s a hard slog. It’s great to see Tom break down the dog behaviour, but how he breaks down the owner’s behaviour and educates them is gold. Tom has helped me when my trainer hasn’t been as good with the communication.

I went to the park with my daughter yesterday and there’s a dog park next to the kids park. Since I’ve learned more about dog training and watching people interact (or not interact) with their dog it was veryyyy interesting to just watch. I saw red flags everywhere I even watched a guy kick his dog 😡 I so badly just wanted to help all these people fix their relationships with their pups 😫

Great video! I love how you explain everything as it's happening. One thing I'd like to point out, which I think is interesting is, at about 5:38 in the video, when you approach the owner, then turn around to walk away,, the dog does a whole body shake. That I feel is the turning point. I call it shaking of the bad juju. After that, she seems to be more accepting of you and those around her.

Great video. I know so many people with this issue. My old dog was kind of the opposite. Super friendly and lived everyone while I was there, but freaked and would bite if I wasn't. Very few people could handle him if I wasn't there. Keep up the good work!

This situation was our re-homed, labeled aggressive GSD. Thank goodness, I found your videos! Literally used the prong collar for minutes and had a more confident dog. Now that I have practiced with the collar, she is on a loose leash 98% of the time. She’s a dog that is SO much happier. Not only that, but I pull out the prong collar and we have and excited happy dog! Mr. Davis- you are poetry in motion. Can’t thank you enough for teaching me how to be a better dog owner which has lead to our dog becoming a love muffin!

Great job to all of you. My 5 yr old GSD, was dropped off on my doorstep 2 and a half years ago. Re homed so many times. I believe he was in a cage for the beginnings of his life. He is far from perfect but comes to work with me now. He is still not fully socialized but upgrading challenges all the time. Love, teaching boundaries, and a stable home has created our life together. We have not parted since May 11th 2020. I am 54,a Mother of 2 grown children, the rules are basically the same. The first day he ripped my husbands shirt and my husband was wearing it at the time. NO BAD DOGS.

Yep, Chanz. Exactly the same....he was literally hanging from the collar in air trying to eat anyone trying to get into his space. One day it "clicked" in his head, it was like a switch was turned on. His insecurity and protectiveness towards people and dogs were disheartening. He now "hosts" fosters from rescues at our home and just last year he learned how to play with dogs. I so wish I could learn more and dedicate more time for "problem dogs" It's been an amazing journey which has taken us cross country. I LOVE TO WATCH AND LEARN.

I’ve been binge watching these videos all morning to help me ensure my new life friend and I can live our best lives together! She’s been through so much in her short year and a half on the earth, but she has such a want and will to be brave with everything, that she makes me want and will to do the same in my life. By watching these videos, it’s giving me hope that we WILL get through all the obstacles together and be each others support system and comfort/safe place. Thank you Tom for breaking everything down and simplifying it. Other videos I’ve watched make everything so complicated and unrealistic. (Seriously… no one can be with their life friend every second of every day.) Thank you for giving us hope!
