The man, the myth, the legend…”Hey it’s Shawn with Gate City Foundation”.

I've been a Gate City video addict for quite a while now. When I began to have flooding problems around my house, my experience with Shawn's videos taught me exactly what questions I should ask of potential contractors, and I think played a huge role in getting a great system that's been working flawlessly for years now. Thanks to Shawn from Houston!

Shawn addresses all aspects of drainage, not just running pipes. Most contractors specialize in one aspect of drainage such as a sump pump inside a basement. Shawn will do that as a last resort. Grading the property, installing driveways, patios, etc pitched to shed water, advising about proper gutters and downspouts all keep water from getting inside and need to be done before an inside pump.

Now that I think about it, the first French drain I ever saw was at your dad's spec house build.

Great video! I've been following Shawn on KZbin for a while. I live in Wisconsin and I see so many homeowners in the Midwest with the same problems that Shawn is solving.

I'm surprised you found Shawn's video because his channel is still pretty small compared to Apple Drains or French Drain Man. I think Shawn uses the best drainage strategies. If I wasn't already successful in my career, I would probably start a drainage company like Shawn in my area, because the contractor's here are worthless. They do not excavate or grade, but rather want to install interior basement drainage with new sump pump and wall vapor barrier, and charge $10-20K just to do 800 square foot of space.

Enjoyed this interview. I replaced a corrugated pipe from a downspout several years ago. It was full of debris though it was only a few years old. I replaced it with pvc for the same reasons stated in this video.

I found Shawns channel this year and I love it, great content, great person. Im taking on a project to help my aunt deal with a sump pump discharge problem, although I can't daylight my pipe, I'm taking into consideration what I learned from Gate City!

"Full Bubble, No trouble," "smooth pipe, no gripe" the full bubble slogan is the most popular on the channel. Nothing teaches better than real life action.

Good video. I can appreciate his terminology since I live in an area of similar soils and fully understand the issues associated with it. I have probably inspected hundreds of miles of underdrain installation during my career in a major commercial environment and have seen the issues with corrugated plastic pipe he describes. (PVC is not practical in my career experience application simply due to cost but a non-functioning system is useless. Materials were not my call during my career.). The issues smaller installers need to understand is the corrugated pipe has friction that clogs easily and needs regular cleaning to be serviceable. Cleaning corrugated pipe is a difficult task. Second, with camera inspections I have found numerous collapses of the perforated corrugated pipe from backfilling with heavy equipment which is another advantage of using PVC when possible. Lastly, rodents LOVE the discharge end of the pipe for nesting. When a system is relatively isolated from debris, I would recommend a wire screen inserted into the discharge end to prevent entry of rodents. Thanks.
