The thing that I always LOVE about generation 4 is that they decided to give us deep mythology as to why the Pokémon world is the way that it is. There’s so much deep history in the Pokémon lore that Sinnoh/Hisui is literally the pillar of the Pokémon world. Hence why I think they decided to release Legends Arceus first. So we can understand the original power and why Arceus, Palkia, Dialga and Giratina fit in the lore. Their original power. Idk I’m excited for this because there’s so many ways the story can go.

about the Veilstone Myth, i always imagined that the Pokémon the human speaks to is just a small beast Pokémon like say, Mightyena or Absol that disappears by running into the fog, but the point you bring up about Alpha Pokémon is pretty convincing, that people and Pokémon became separate due to that human's actions and Alpha Pokémon are the ones exacting that toll

I always assumed it was Giratina or Shayman. Giratina disappearing into the Distortion World since Turnback Cave is by Veilstone. Or Shayman angrily states it will attack humans or starve them out because the human was ungrateful, resulting in it leaving the area.

The whole "Original One" splitting was kind of just an interpretation of the time of trying to understand how the Pokemon universe came to be. It's a lot more likely that Dialga and Palkia along with the Lake Guardians were created by Arceus in a similar vein to the Sinjoh Ruins event. The line "Set free from the Original One" could actually be the Pokemon hatching from the eggs created by Arceus, "setting them free" could be related to how they were trapped inside of the eggs but now hatched. If Arceus actually split, then it would have obviously lost a lot of its power, but that simply isn't the case, especially when Arceus has the power to create a member of the Creation trio with no splitting involved. Also the "Original One" could literally be the Arceus we are used to seeing.

There's the issue that the word used is 結婚. There are words for marriage in Japanese that are used in the way Toby described such as 添う, but this one means marriage explicitly.

I think every region from Hoenn onwards has a fair amount of mythology/lore, mostly because of the legendaries. But Johto and Kanto definitely need much more lore.

(Zacian specifically), as when you find the Rusted Sword in SWSH, it's broken in half, in a "ruins" like area... Also, the Pokémon disappears into a "hidden" place? Sounds like the Slumbering Weald.

The depth that has been added to this game and this region is amazing. I wish the mythicals from gens 5-8 would have had so much more, like what significance do Volcanion or Diancie have? I want there to be lore, I want the legends and myths to be special. Mew, Rayquaza, and Deoxys were done right. I hope that for future gens there are less legendaries/mythical if necessary, but more story, more quests.

Maybe this personified Sinnoh that we see in the trailers is the name for "the original one" as we see in these myths - Arceus when it was whole or had all its energy. Or maybe even Sinnoh is the name for the creative energy of Arceus, and during the plot of LA it uses Sinnoh, this energy, to create that lightning strike thing from the trailers? Idk, it's such an exciting thing to think about

The Japanese version of Sinnoh Folk Story 3 is very specific in that it means actual marriage. The word used in Japanese is a form of the verb 結婚する, though written in hiragana けっこんする and conjugated in the past tense as けっこんした. The exact meaning of the verb is exactly "to get married", like through a wedding get married. I imagine GameFreak wanted you to interpret it like the many myths in Japan about humans marrying yokai, like the common getting married to a kitsune fox stories. So the humans marrying Pokémon doesn't sound as strange from this perspective, since it's very likely inspired by those yokai one.

Hearing all these myths makes me wonder more about the "original one" and how Arceus may be similar to Kyurem in that it is more of a husk of a greater being. Maybe Sinnoh is that original being, and it would be so dope to experience a pokemon of such a caliber not even to catch but just experience! I also really like the thought that Noble Pokemon are the giants referred to on the plates. Anyway,.. Thanks for going through all these myths. The lore introduced in this region really makes me soooo excited and drawn in to kind of "uncovering" the secrets of the pokemon universe. I am hoping LA leans into that. Brings me back to the joy I experienced with doing the puzzles at the Ruins of Alph and exploring the Ruins of the Sevii Islands back in the day :)!

The Veilstone myth...The fangs and claws are referencing the lake trio since in the game they give you a claw, a fang, and a plume. I think the pokemon the human talks to is one of the lake guardians.

I like the idea that "Sinnoh" is the Original one birthed from the first egg. In separating itself to create the pokemon world it split into 4, time, space, matter and a husk/ figure head. I feel Arceus as it is now is equivalent in strength or slightly stronger than the others but has the ability to channel more power or even re-absorb the others and become Sinnoh again. Thus potentially destroying the world in the last days, ragnarok or biblical revolation style.

Happy to see a full breakdown of the myths. And having them all in one video is great. It's hard to say if Dialga and Palkia and the lake trio separated from Arceus or that Arceus created them. If they separated from some original being, then doesn't that mean Garatina did too. That would also mean in order to get the original pokemon you have to combine 6 pokemon with Arceus, and that also means we'll likely never see this pokemon like how we likely won't see the original dragon in Unova. Maybe I'm looking too deep though?

Thing to note; The English translation takes some liberties with the Original Story. It mentions a vortex, a turbulent chaos, a heart of chaos, right? Well, in the Japanese version, these three separate mentions are not actually separate. They're all just the same word; The swirling chaos. Japanese is a language where context is often implied, which doesn't translate well to English. So, they translated it with more separation, which ended up leading to confusion. Dialga and Palkia are called "bunshin" in the Japanese translation. Bunshin is a term with many different meanings, but it implies a kind of mitosis. You can call bunshins twins, avatars, clones, partitions. Like Toby mentions, it is possible that Arceus separated parts of himself to make other members of the creation trio.

Talking about the Veilstone's Myth, I have a theory connecting to it. 3000 years ago, people used pokemon to fight a war for them . Which would require Pokemon and people to have some sort of connection. But in this game, Pokemon and people live sperate, meaning that there's no reason for Pokemon to take part of a human war. And from what many of us are guessing, this game takes place just a couple hundred years in the past, so that leads to two main conclusions. Either this some how takes place before the war, meaning it's 3000+ years in the past, or it is a couple hundred years in the past ( this is assuming that Pokemon didn't forget about this war, hopefully they haven't, or that Legends is part of the two Pokemon universes). Now, it taking place 3000+ years in the past, is most likely not what is happening here. But if it is true, Gamefreak has to explain that well in the game. Now, if it were to take place just a couple hundred years ago, there's a huge gap between the war and the period this game takes place. Which leads me to strongly believe that within this time gap, Pokemon and humans began to live separately, either as a outcome of the war or the ultimate weapon or from some events that started the war or mabye from a event we never heard of before or even from Veilstone's Myth. So let's say Pokemon began to not trust humans because any of reasons I listed, not including Veilstone's Myth, and since pokeballs still didn't exist, humans didn't have a say in this and couldn't do anything because Pokemon are far more powerful than them. So this starts the sperate lives of the two groups and after 2000+ years, almost all humans don't know a life of human and Pokemon living together , mabye to them that is a legend or myths of the past. And if the ultimate weapon was used, AZ is the only human who has lived a life with and now without Pokemon. And if most the Veilstone's Myth is true, then there was a time where the world of Pokemon , didn't have pokemon existing. And if this time lasted maybe around 100 years, then the sudden return of Pokemon would catch people off. These humans don't know how or even what Pokemon are and probably fear most of them. So most humans try to find a way to live sperate from Pokemon, so they can survive and live peaceful. This is just what I could gather for this theory. Hopefully the game can give us some clues to explain the timeline more.

It might be possible that the war 3000 years ago wasn't known in Hisui and Hisui didn't participate in it. The war might only be known in Unova and Kalos which are far away from Hisui.

Great video Toby! I've always been fascinated by pokemon's lore and history in Sinnoh and the other games, and I can't wait to see all the new lore we get from Legends Arceus. In fact, I'm waiting to post new chapters to a fanfic I'm writing about pokemon folklore until the new game gets released (my character Professor Maple explores different pokemon folktales/fairytales from different regions and explains their significance/history/etc.). The origins myth reminds me of Pokémon BW2 and Kyrem. There's also Necrozma in USUM. However BW2 was released first. Perhaps there's a link. With Legends Arceus you can also have Oshawott, a Unova Pokémon, as a starter. If there's another Legends game, it could be in Unova with references to Sinnoh/Hisui and Arceus. There's also the justice trio which could potentially link to the Veilstone myth, although that's a bit of a stretch.

with the cave painting and the pictures depicting the lake trio, bringing together all 3 gets you the red chain (thats how Cyrus gets it), the red chain could be what the red dot circle in the picture represents, not sure if the red chain can or does summon/bind/allow a person to control either dialga/palkia and maybe if either time or space are in some way under threat or in danger, arceus could appear and deal with whats happening in the world, maybe to prevent its destruction. food for thought :)

In regards to the plates having two different times they are accounted to being made, this could be drawing inspiration from the Shinto myths where Nippon was the first area of the world to be created.

Gen 4 did have the most new Pokémon introduced that were classified in the Pokédex as Legendaries and Mythical.
