This is so helpful! Despite living in Montana for a few years and now in Maryland, I’m really a SoCal girl at heart and never really had to give it much thought. Now that I’m becoming more interested in gardening, this info was awesome. Thanks! ❤️

O word, this was very helpful. I thought I knew all about frost dates. But never understood why some cities are in my zone and drastic differences they have in temperature from me. Your video really explained how and why to many of my questions. Thanks so much for your time and excellent review of this info. Have a blessed day and rest of your week. Now, off to set dates on my seeds as well. 👏🏻 God bless.

What a great idea to use 2 frost dates! Last year I was early planting and found myself rescuing my few early plants from a few frosts. So this year I was going completely conservative but today I will readjust my start dates. Thank you!!!

I just found your channel and I already learned a lot. I live partly in the Netherlands and in France (in the center) and yes both zone 7 with more or less the same frost dates but in France it’s generally 6 degrees C warmer than in the Netherlands. I never understood that till I saw your video! Thank you 😊. When we bought our French house with a large garden 3 years ago I asked my neighbors about the frost dates. And they were right, I took the risk of planting dahlias 10 days before the last frost date and I lost half of the tubers… Looking forward to see more videos of you.

I'm so glad you found this helpful! I have found that keeping an eye on the 10-day weather forecast can help with planting plans... though, as we know, the forecast is not always correct! Sorry to hear about the dahlia loss, that's tough!!!!!

Yes I always get confused on the last frost date question so I follow the Impatient Gardener as she's 50 miles from me in WI.... but this answers all the questions I had regarding this. Thanks.

Thanks for this video. I’m also in Baltimore and it’s true that it’s confusing so I asked my local garden center, Poor Boys, and they told me close to the end of April. And I’m glad you went over that chart, now I understand it. Thanks

Thanks for the great information. This helped me determine when I need to start my seeds. It will be my second attempt to start seedlings. The first time was a disaster however that was 25-30 years ago. Im older, hopefully wiser and have more money than back then to spend on things like grow lights let alone having the ability to set up my own grow room... This hobby may be expensive to start up but boy is it good for the soul..! Happy growing!

Thanks for putting this together. I garden in Switzerland and this is often a question that often makes me scratch my head🤔Some Swiss website classify our zone as 8a and give the average last frost day as being mid March others paint a completely different picture🤷🏾♀️ To add to the dilemma, we have not seen any snow this January 2022 in the small municipality where we live; where as last year the area was almost completely covered in snow during the whole month of January🌨❄️ I’m sure Global Warning is also smiling somewhere thinking that we have not seen it all yet😅 I have to add that it’s a good thing the sun shines sooner or later in everyone’s garden and sooner or later each gardener knows when their favorite plants thrive in their gardens, if they don’t give up too soon that is😉
@HarmonyHillsHomeandGarden2 жыл бұрын
You're so right about your last sentiment! Someday the sun will come out and smile on us all! You might want to look into "Weather Underground". It's a network of crowd-sourced personal weather stations that you can log in to and look at what hte weather readings are at these weather stations. We have a personal weather station in our back yard, and we connect it to this network. So not only do we know what the weather in our back yard is, others can see it too. And we can see theirs at other personal stations near by. So, maybe this is happening in Switzerland too? Just a thought!

Here in Southern Maine in zone 5B and also to a lesser degree when I lived in Berlin NH in zone 4, the holiday we use is Memorial Day. Pretty safe to plant after that. So true that the matching zones are not necessarily the same. Laura at Garden Answer used to be the same zone as here before they changed hers. Her growing season is very long. Ours is 119 days. But this is better than my northern NH garden which only had 90 days growing season.

That sounds so late to me! I'd have a hard time gardening in such a short season.

Thanks for your hard work. It's really difficult to figure out your parameters. Glad you noted time away from home as a factor, as well as willingness/ability to provide protection. Screwed up weather forecasts can make a difference too. Your counsel provides a rational decision-making process under uncertain conditions. Thank you!

Every year is different. I think the 2weeks after your first frost date is best. That being said I remember great March weather years ago and having our worse ice and snow storms at the end of May. I'm in zone 5b Ontario where we usually use the May Victoria Day weekend as our planting out date. June 1st is even safer. I think that's why I grow more perennials.

Thank you for including Celsius temperatures. I am in Southern Ontario, Canada and we use Celsius here. Most people in this area know not to plant anything until after the long weekend in late May (Victoria Day). I usually wait until early June just to be safe. Canadian gardening zones are slightly different than American so you have to be careful where you get your information from when planting or purchasing plants. Sometimes plants are labelled with American zones and if you aren’t informed you can end up with a dead plant come spring. Thank you for the information you provided in this video.

Thank you for taking the time to talk about this. Note, the nearest weather station may not be close enough to you given the topography can really vary (microclimates). In the end, I really have to guess - but at least it is based on something

This was so helpful and informative! I ran across one of those charts and didn't have a clue how to decipher it. One source had my last avg. frost date a couple weeks earlier than I am used to. I like your suggestion of separating cool-season seeds from warm-season seeds and planting according to the various dates. It's fun thinking about the upcoming growing season as I see icicles about 2 ft. long.
@HarmonyHillsHomeandGarden2 жыл бұрын
Glad it was helpful! Yes, the "average" last frost is always earlier than the date many of us use to plant out summer annuals, and I think that's the confusing part, for me at least!
@marlenabarnes72802 жыл бұрын
There is usually within 2 weeks of the last freeze and frost dates so I look at our extended forecast to see if temperatures are expected to give us a frost. Then I know I can plant and most likely not need to protect them. Same in the fall, if a freeze is expected in our forecast, I get prepared. :)

Hello there. 😊I just got the Garden journal, planner and log book. It is GREAT!!!!!! I’m so pleased but I want to take it apart and put it in a binder. How would I do this without tearing/ripping the pages???
@HarmonyHillsHomeandGarden2 жыл бұрын
I'm afraid there's no way to do it without tearing, or cutting the pages out. I simply used a razor blade to cut my pages off the binding. I've also heard that you can take it to Staples or FedEx or another print/office place, and ask them to cut the binding off and punch 3-ring holes, or even put a spiral binding on it. not sure of the cost of that. Good luck!

Here in France we have the date of the Saint Ice (St. Glaces) which is between the 9th and 13th of May. Up until then we can get frost. That's our reference for planting out. It's often difficult to wait 😒 but wise to be patient

Great video. I think I can live with frost dates, hope to figure out when best to plant. However, I think that my largest, most compelling problem is that rabbits eat the young seedlings and adolescent plants all through the spring and early summer. I have tried to figure it out by researching many sources online, but have found no scientifically valid solutions. I'm afraid of what will happen once the rabbits come out again.
@HarmonyHillsHomeandGarden2 жыл бұрын
You may have luck with netting or with deterrent spray. "Deer Stopper II" has worked well for me. Also, I used to place mothballs out in the flower beds to deter rabbits, and that worked as well. Good luck!
@jcl53452 жыл бұрын
@@HarmonyHillsHomeandGarden Thanks for your reply! I'll try both
@jcl53452 жыл бұрын
Actually because of past experience in my garden, I have a feeling that netting might be best. The rabbits are really hungry in the spring, don't know why they want my garden of little plants coming up instead of the woodland plants right behind my yard. Last year, my garden was chewed often until mid-summer by the rabbits and groundhogs. As well, cosmos directly planted into the garden never came up.. probably birds.

Hi, I live in the north of Portugal and have been wondering how to calculate when my spring is. We don't get much frost here so don't worry about frost dates too much. But is there a low nightly temperature which means it's still winter or spring already ?
@HarmonyHillsHomeandGarden2 жыл бұрын
the only thing I'm aware of is that many summer plants don't really like to go below 50F, or 10C. So, keep an eye on your forecast and wait to put out heat-lovers until the nights consistently stay above that temp. Good luck!
