Interesting comment regarding knowing only the city, not the state in which it is located. Must be a generational thing. When I was at school in the U.K. We learned all of the states and capital cities not only in Australia, but New Zealand, Canada and South Africa. That was before Britain started looking inward and crawling to mainland Europe!!

We are going to end up cashless so I have actually started collecting commemorative coins as well, yeah they are generally worth more than their face value to an extent. Also misprints and wrong die coins are worth something. I'm just waiting until there are no coins.

The UK actually has seperate states they are called Scotland, Wales, England and Northern Ireland. You refer to them as countries but they act pretty much the same as our states do. They have their own governments but are all part of a Uniited Kingdom and are governed federally the same way as our states and territories are. In 1963 a government study was carried out on the content of Australian Television and found that 93% of it was being generated in the US so its no wonder that Australia contains a mixture of cultures from the UK and the US. With the influx of US media came some of the words that we now use. Coins are sometimes minted to celebrate certain occasions they are not usually worth anymore than the face value mostly because of the number that are produced but there are a few exceptions that you can look up just in case you happen to come across one. Doctors prescribe antibiotics for the length of time that they know will definately kill the bug if you stop taking them before ithat bug will build resistance to antibiotics and over time they will stop being as effective. Over prescribing antibiotics also increases that risk so a lot of doctors today will only prescribe them when absolutely necessary and they will also stress the need to complete the whole course. They dont have daylight saving in Qid because they reckoned that the extra hour of daylight would fade their curtains.

In response to your comments about our States not being mentioned in the UK, perhaps this is because you don’t have States in England although the UK does have separate countries and I think you sometimes refer to these in the UK? People from Canada and the United States seem to understand something about our having States because they have provinces or States themselves. Australia was formed when the previous separate colonies (established by Britain back in the day) agreed to federate into one nation and those colonies were then called states😊. Each colony had their own laws and tariffs and defence units etc back then but some of this changed with Federation when the National or federal government took over various responsibilities. However, there are still many areas which the States control. If you had been here during the Covid pandemic period you would have very much noticed this as the States could close their borders to prevent Covid spreading etc. The States also control the bulk of health provision and the staff/people/physical health resources-even though Medicare is a National scheme. The other difference I noticed between England and Australia is that your Councils seem to have some of the responsibilities that belong to our States whereas our Councils have more limited responsibilities. I hope this helps. Glad you are enjoying life!

Root is the sex act. I still say root for route.Rowt to me is an American term & I cringe every time I hear it. Another one is the letter "H". Some people sound it as Haich while a majority say Aitch.
@kenchristie92143 ай бұрын
Australians mispronounce route, because Australians need to mimic the Americans. It's the same reason why we now refer to biscuits as cookies, crisps as chips and chips as fries.

Hi 😊 - I don't see many coins these days as I pay everything with plastic...but those coins don't look like Australian money to me. - Only drunk Bogans are going to use *root in the way you described . I must admit though that I pronounce *route in the American way to avoid embarrassment 😅 - My husband from Mancester has been here 40 years. He still slips and says "shugger" instead of sugar sometimes. Oh dear. -Your doctor is over prescribing which is so odd. Doctors are usually loathe to precribe antibiotics these days with very good reason. My advice - look for a new doctor.

It's important to take the full prescription of antibiotics even if you feel better after taking only half the prescription in order to avoid the issue of 'antibiotics resistance'. Many people stopped taking the meds as soon as they fealt well but the germ wasn't fully dead yet! The germ then built up resistance to the antibiotic and then, when it was passed on, the next victim would remain sick even after receiving antibiotics because the germ was no longer killed by it! At some point in the not too distant future, antibiotics will no longer be effective and we'll be back in the position we were prior to the discovery of antibiotics which is a concdern for future generations and their life expectancy!
