I called computer services and they did a diagnostic and we looked in the system report and found the battery wasn't holding a charge anymore. I made an appointment with the store and went down today. They ran a diagnostic on the computer and other than the bad battery the computer is in perfect condition. They suggested a new battery and not a new computer. It's running great tonight.

I've had my MacBook Air since 2019--coming up on 3 years. I keep it plugged in when in use and rarely unplug it during tasks. When I close it or power it down, then I will unplug the laptop. The IOS will discharge the battery when I'm plugged in and then recharge whenever it feels it's necessary. Usually it will go down to 90% although lately it's been going down to 80% and leaving it on hold. With these fail safes, there's no reason to drain and recharge the battery on your own anymore. After 3 years, my cycle count is 116. 😁

My 2015 macbook pro only lasted like 1100 cycles before it died/refused to turn on & needed a full Apple replacement by 2020 where they replace the entire bottom of the laptop. Funny thing is the replacement is now on 2200+ cycles & is still working fine, wonder if Apple's replacements are better than the original seeing as they charge you £200 for one. Anyway gonna run this Macbook to the ground till it died to recoup the £200 but getting 10 years out of a £1k decent laptop ain't bad. I know this topic is full of debate re how to pro long the life, but personally from what I've seen myself, leaving it plugged in when at a desk doesn't do any real harm imo, as long as you do take it off charge weekly & never let it drain below 20%.

Hey Craig, How do I count CYCLES if I used “plugged” it doesn’t count or is bad for the battery??? Example: if I charge it up to 100% I use it at school 30%, but when I get home I still use plugged, so instead of downgrading the percentage it’s gonna go up while I’m using it. So what happens with the cycles there????
@craigneidel2 жыл бұрын
Basically it won't count as a cycle until you use 100%. So in your example you used 70% of the battery and then charged it. So the next day once you use another 30% it will count as one cycle. I feel leaving it plugged in while near a power source does not hurt the battery. In the end just enjoy and don't worry about the battery as they last many years. Secondly What if we keep the laptop on charge all the time? will it still increase the cycle count? per definition, it shouldn't but obviously, that's not possible...
@craigneidel3 жыл бұрын
It's a bad idea to leave the macbook charged all the time per Apple. That might be what is causing the cycle counts. Try unplugging it and using the battery then recharging and let me know if that slows down the cycle count. My guess is that it will.

Since it's my first MacBook ever, I wanted to be nice and be punctual on the charging and unplugging. Now for two days, I kept it on the charger, the battery is 100% and the cycle count changed to 63 just last night. So slowing down did happen but only when I keep it plugged in. Also, even when you keep it plugged into a charger, after some time the battery starts to drain down to 90% or 89%. I searched the net and found a note on Apple Support about it being an intended functionality to increase battery life. My colleague and I bought our machines together. His cycle count is 40.

Yes, it's hard to say but something may have damaged the battery as it can happen from time to time. That is a lower count but you need to take it in to the Apple store and ask them why at only 191 cycles the battery is bad. Not at all. That is only a guide by apple. If your battery is holding charge keep using it. Once you notice charge only gives you 50 percent you used to get replace it. Or if it's at an age where battery replacement by apple might go away usually after 7 or 8 years. Thanks Alberto.

@craigneidel2 жыл бұрын
It will limit the cycle count but over time your battery's condition will get worse like all batteries as they have a finite shelf life. But, the cycle count will stay down and it should last much longer than always running on battery. If your battery says to repair I really can't direct you what to do there but maybe have them check it out. If it's swelling then I would be more worried and I would go in quicker but in most cases it warns you way in advance.

I have not seen that before. The cycle count is really only important I guess if you are selling the machine and the person has that knowledge. But I don't think it is actually hurting the battery but of course if anybody has seen this then please post. I have not.

Yes, sounds like the battery is failing. The M1 Macbook air you can pick up for around $899 now and you can even sell your older Macbook for some good money (maybe $400) with the bad battery making it only $400. Just something to consider. I love Thinkpads but new ones can cost well over $1,200.

I'm new to MacBook. Bought one a week ago. I'm loving. I still get frustrated about this issue though cause I don't understand people stressing about, and now I feel like I have to stress about it. My old laptop, an HP, I never ever kept it plugged in. I charged it, unplugged, used the battery till I got a warning, I charged it again, and so on. Had it for about 6 years, never worried about that. Now I wanna do that with this MacBook, which I feel should be the way to use it, but am confused. I charge it everyday, as I did with my old computer. Is it bad? Should I keep plugged in? I really don't understand.
@craigneidel Жыл бұрын
Don't stress and it will last 6 or more years if you charge it all the time. The batteries usually last longer than Windows systems in most cases (laptops). But, when you are near an outlet and can plug it that will mean you are not using any cycles and it may prolong your battery. At the very least if you want to sell your system in the future it can keep cycles down (people can see that) but in the end just use it and it will be fine. I would not stress about it.

@jesus Rodriguez- I wouldn’t sweat it, i never paid attention to my cycle count. I had the old 2011 macbook pro and it lasted me for 10 years. If you have the Macbook pro I believe it has a 1000 cycle count so it should last you for long time.

I ALWAYS plug power adapt connected when I use my MacBook. Does that mean I am using cycles all the time? For example, let’s that 1 cycle gives me 3 hours of usage. Case 1) I use 12 hours with: always plugged in = 4 cycles. Case 2) I use 12 hours with: 1 hour unplugged, 3 hours plugged, 1 hour unplugged, 3 hours plugged, 1 hour unplugged, 3 hours plugged = 3 cycles? Which makes a 1 cycle difference if I take out or disconnect the adapter when it’s fully charged?

It might have been counting from your last charge (before this recent charge) and over time it averages out. This is how Apple explains it and I'm sure it's not going to be exact but should average out to be very close over time.
@peterpineda54322 жыл бұрын
@@craigneidel it just feels like the cycle count increase quicker then previous models or is it just me overthinking ?
@craigneidel2 жыл бұрын
@@peterpineda5432 it shouldn't but it could be a bad battery. I would just write down every time you charge it for 2 weeks. If you are at 30 precent and charge it then write down 70 percent for that charge. At end of two weeks add all that up and divide by 100 to see how many full charges. Then compare against cycle change s. If close I would not worry about it as it's not exact science.

Hey, Craig My macbook's battery cycle count is 1354 but it was charging just fine before I had the left I/O board and flex cable replaced due to a liquid spill. After the replacement, every new charger would charge my macbook for a while then holds the charge and shows "not charging". Will this be solved with a battery replacement because I was hoping the I/O board replacement along with new flex cable should've helped after the liquid spill.
@craigneidel3 жыл бұрын
It's a tough call but it appears like you need a new battery. Not sure 100% if you had water damage though as that can mess up other parts over time.

@@craigneidel thank u for replying! my battery did give me a notification saying it needed to be replaced soon but from what I’ve read and figured out that isn’t too serious but the cycle count is over 1000 (1354) which obviously points more towards a new battery but this issue wasn’t there before the replacement so I’m assuming it has more to do with the liquid damage not being dealt with properly
