I really like magic in comics. That is what I love about DC and Marvel. Instead of strictly being a Sci Fi genre or a fantasy genre or simply a super hero genre it carries them all. I find that extremely creative and interesting because you think of Superman, the idealistic boy scout super hero, and then you find out he is a sci fi character then you realize the Greek genre also exists around the "idealistic hero" and then you keep on expanding it to the point where this is not a Sci Fi genre, or fantasy.Know what I mean? Instead of limiting yourself to just a sci fi story like Star Wars Star trek or Mass Effect which are just one genre which is sci fi. In DC and Marvel they carry all genres, Science Fiction, Fantasy, Super hero and merge them together and give them chemistry together as an art form.

Although what is often forgotten in writing in general is that magic requires rules. Despite what Joe Quesada thinks, magic has to be explained to some degree. It still needs a source, you have to make rules for what a magical character can and cannot do (much like writing characters in general) and what is or isn't effected by magic.

I always liked the idea that magic is split into two parts. Sorcery and spell casting. Where sorcery is manipulating raw magical energy to your whim, spell casting is using magical energy and changing it into a specific form i.e. a fireball. In my opinion, one of the greatest faults of the way magic is presented in both DC and Marvel is that they never establish any clear rules for it, and when they do they never stick to them. What magic is to Constantine and what the rules are for him are completely different from every other magic user in his reality and the same goes for Marvel characters. When ever they attempt to plot out a rule for magic, some writer comes along and goes "what? why can't I do that? its magic after all" and we end up back at square one. And I think this is why both Marvel & DC are afraid to approach the topic in adaptations such as film. Thor is no longer a god but just an extra-dimensional alien with tech so advanced it appears to be magic, and in interviews about Doctor Strange they said that magic will just be a way of manipulating quantum physics that modern science does not yet understand. They clearly want to define the universe they are creating but the implementation of magic suddenly puts this big undefinable X factor into play. Plus I'd imagine they are afraid of alienating the "lowest common denominator" of film goers (a rather mythical thing in and of itself I'd like to point out) that would see the implementation of "magic" as kids stuff. As such they want to make magic firmly grounded in scientific principle in order to avoid this. I am personally not opposed to either of those ideas in and of themselves, but when dealing with the established traits of a narrative that your are trying to adapt faithfully into a new medium it really devalues the originality of the characters. Also I think its a cough out, that comic book writer's are afraid to deal with the Abrahamic mythologies the same way they do with all the others. "The Presence" and the like are presented as more powerful or incredibly vague then the contemporaries like Ares or Odin so as to not piss off the religious majority in North America because they might throw a temper-tantrum. If Thor and Zeus can be comic-book characters that can be punched in the face by "mere mortals" for being arrogant self-entitled little shits then so should Yahweh, Jehovah, Allah and the rest. I can only imagine the hilarious shitstorm that would be the result of depicting, say, Jesus as an alien with really advanced medical technology, that just so happens to look like traditional ancient middle-eastern garb.
@ItsSuperEffective10 жыл бұрын
I have always felt like the lack of rules established in magic in comic books just reflects the lack of common rules in real life Magick practices, I mean if you look at the teachings of old Celtic magick, Obeah and Crowley stuff, its hard to find more than a few things that are similar. So to me it's always made sense that magic has no clear rules in comics, because it has no clear rules in real life for those who do practice it. Of course like I mention in some other videos, I was brought up in the Occult, so maybe my perspective is a bit different. As for the movie thing, I am 100% with you there.
@Mister-Thirteen10 жыл бұрын
ItsSuperEffective I get that, different cultures and time periods have different practices involving magic. But when writing a narrative and building a world all its own you need to implement some rules on how such things could supposedly work. Otherwise you end up writing yourself into a corner, they don't need to be inflexible rules or even very imposing ones, but they need to be there in order to keep the narrative coherent. In example, in Jim Butcher's works the rules of magic are vague enough to allow room to indulge in whatever he so chooses to do with it, but still keeps the tension up because the main characters cannot simply make their problems disappear. Or how Brent Weeks clearly defines the rules of magic and uses creativity to make up for the limitations he places on it. Also, I spent a great deal of time in my youth learning about as many kinds of spiritual practices as I could. Looking for something I could agree with philosophically & didn't require logical acrobatics to justify. So I am fairly familiar with the Occult, even thou in the end I ended up returning to factory settings as an Atheist.

John dignerds Which is ironic because classical western witchcraft is supposed to be ground in rules. Compare the Secret Circle, Vampire Diaries/The Originals, or the Witches of East End to the likes of Charmed, Bewitch or Sabrina the Teenage Witch. The former is ground in similar rules but different limitations but Sabrina and Bewitch, while still having some rules, takes a far more fantastical approach comparable to Disney Cartoons or the Fairly Odd Parents. Charmed is somewhere in between, Harry Potter too. But What I can never understand is why people are so butt hurt about magic not being clearly defined when Almost no power/ability/force in comics/tv/cartoons is fully explained either.

@CTR_ALT_MAKIMA10 жыл бұрын
No, the Speed Force isn't magical, it's a type of energy that is responsible for all the "speed" used by speedsters in the DC universe. It was created and generated by Barry Allen (the second Flash) and is the source for all Speedsters' powers. By Speedster, I mean people whose primary abilities are speed, such as all the Flashes, Max Mercury, Jesse Quick, etc. not people who happen to have super speed along with other abilities like Wonder Woman or Superman. Also, when a speedster dies, they can become "one" with the Speed Force

It's more complicated than that. Her magic is internalized due to being half demon, but her human half utilizes a form she was taught a form from the Monk's of Azarath but that is also internalized. DC magicians/sorcerers rarely tap into other dimensions unless they are summoning or conjuring something/someone from said dimensions. The main except is non natural born users.

Occult can involve satan...occult also means hidden...which also includes being subversive or secretive on purpose...Freemasons practice the occult as well,and they have kind words regarding Lucifer.
@lucariomew3659 жыл бұрын
It specifically refers to ascertaining hidden knowledge that is supernatural, paranormal, or spiritual nature. Most of the time said information was hidden away to control the masses (usually via ignorance and/or fear), thus and exposing it and also exposes the corruption of those in power. Those who are in power will usually go to extreme lengths keep said knowledge hidden, often to the point of planning assassinations, massacres, and even wars. This is why anything relating to the Occult is treated with the utmost discretion, sometimes to the point of paranoia. It has virtually nothing to do with the devil.

@lucariomew36510 жыл бұрын
Superman's "weakness" to magic is grossly exaggerated partly in that it doesn't weaken him he just has vulnerable to it like most mortals. So unless the being is a god or a mid->high tier sorcerer, of which Aquaman is neither, then no. The lightning blasts from Aquaman's trident would injury Superman but it's not like it's a one hit KO. Super endurance and healing can keep Superman going and he'll just use his speed and flight to dodge another assault.

@lucariomew36510 жыл бұрын
Charmed (TV show & comic), Buffy the Vampire Slayer (TV Show and comic), Angel, American Horror Story Coven, Justice League Dark (comic), Hellblazer (comic), Spawn (comic), Fables (comic).
@tylerpreston69910 жыл бұрын
Good suggestions, but a few doesn't match what I'm asking. +Charmed doesn't count because it's fantasy (and it's also a terrible show.) +Buffy & Angel-same thing fantasy, possibly science fantasy. +American Horror Story Coven-more X-men-ish sorry. Though they did deep research on vodoo, which I'll give points on but it doesn't makes the cut. +JLD: is what I'm thinking of and I have the first volume, I reccomend it. John Constatine's history still the same after the reboot with very small changes, so Hellblazer fans +Hellblazer: of course very good example of the occult in fiction, though never read one I will buy one when I get the chance to. +Spawn-never cared for it ever, even when I watched the movie I was bored. +Fables-is a very good series, but it's fantasy hench why all the Fables are the fairy tale character like snow white, big bad wolf, prince charming, etc. (High reccommendon to buy the series even play the Wolf Among Us.) here are few ideas I'm talking of: Sandman, Supernatural, Ghostbuster comics, dylan dog

@tylerpreston69910 жыл бұрын
Murder House is more a ghost story but it does kinda count. Asylum is... I don't know. something about aliens, nazis, the devil, lovecraftian, I don't know. Coven is the worst of the series (and I'm one of the those who dislikes the series as a whole.) I thought the third season would actually focuses on the real wiccan religion, history, spell, rituals, and all that. heck I've read house of night and it's more wiccan than Coven is and that book has vampires. but no all we get is the same thing from the first two misgosny, misandry, racisim, rape, schizo plot and meaningless subplots, horrible characters. But this is coming from a who doesn't like the series, but I will have a open mind for the freak show theme for season 4, hoping it will be at least watchable to me.

Jack Kirby thought of it as the Source beyond the the multiverse that originated everything, but then again, Neil Gaiman wrote about the judeo-christian God as maker of the Silver City where angels live. Its similar to the idea of Kether in kabballah.
