This is so helpful, really one of the best locrian lessons I've watched.

Hi Sean! I usually don't comment on youtube videos, but this series is so good that you deserve all the appreciation and support! I've been playing guitar for almost 7 years and now it is because of you that I've finally stopped feeling that inner shame of not knowing the theory too well. It's all connecting now. Thank you so much!

Great videos on the modes of the major scale. Thank you, sir. Also, Matt Warnock (of Warnock guitars), has an interesting method of teaching the modes. He starts by learning the Lydian mode, then altering (lowering) one note (the #4) to get the Ionian mode. Then, by altering (lowering) one note (the major 7th.) you get the Mixolydian mode. Alter (lower) yet another single note (the major 3rd.), and you get the Dorian mode. It repeats for the Aeolian, and then the Phrygian modes, leaving only the ugly, red-headed step-child of the modes - the Lochrian mode. The modes are only difficult to understand when you don't understand them. :-) I think people should also look at the modes from the 'Parent Scale,' and 'Parallel Scales' approach.

Found your site a few days ago Sean, and subscribed straight away .... I'm really enjoying watching the various videos. I've taken up the guitar as one of my bucket list, and this old guy is thoroughly appreciating your direct, relaxed, and easy to understand method of teaching. Keep up the good work .... greetings from Wales!!

Love your videos I have learned more and made more progress in the last few months of watching your videos than years of trying to figure this stuff out from Google searches. Small suggestion though, when you are teaching positions you should put up tablature for it as well so we can pause the video and practice rather than having to rewind it a few times to see it again

So great to hear! I'm working on possibly starting to add some new tabs to the vids.

I am just coming into the world of modes and when you started talking about the "box", I realized that I have one piece that is definitely very locrian. It seems to resolve itself, but I'm trying to break it down to figure out exactly what I did so that I can better understand how I write. Any help would be great. Basically it starts with the 1,2b,4,5b box in a similar manner to what the video shows. (Just including notes and no timing or repeats noted). This is just a minute long piece that I've never fleshed out and that I wrote blindly. My limited knowledge has made it difficult to map out exactly what I've done here. I just want to know so that I can translate that particular feeling evoked by this short piece and apply that to other pieces in a more deliberate manner, when needed. Notes: E,F,A,F,E E,F,A,Bb E,F,B,C E,F, (octave up) E,F Then: (higher octave)E,F,E E,F,E,C,B (octave down)G#,A G#,A B,C,B (higher octave) E,F,G,F,E, B,C,B (resolution) Maybe someone can explain what I've done here. I only made a connection because of the two boxes I use and because of the dark sound of this particular piece.

+Al R Very cool man. Yeah the way I see it (and this is totally just me) is a minor 2nd riff (E to the b2) that kind of moves up a 4th (when it goes to the A-Bb). So again, probably out of context due to the timing etc, but I would just start incorporating more of those half steps into your writing, and treating those as singular riffs that you move around instead of thinking of them inside a larger scale. Like I have a riff kind of like that, and I'll move it a minor 3rd higher, so if I start going from e-f, I'll just that up to g-Ab and go back. Hope that helps.

So it's typical of Locrian but also present in Mixolydian ??

Hey chief. Love the video series. So if I take everything and scoot it up or down the fret board, I am changing the entire key correct? Like if I take the C major scale and move the entire shape up one fret is that now the C# Major scale? Then what would happen to the triads and 7ths? And the modes would still be the same just in a different key right?
@seandaniel237 жыл бұрын
Yup! You got it, all the modes and intervals are the same in relation to each other, they just have different names (like C# or Db Major, D#/Eb Dorian etc)

Please check out my Locrian song: ‘Beyond the Dark’. Although the tonic in the song is supposed to be a diminished chord, I just left out the flat fifths, so it’s kind of a minor sound (without fifth), rather than a diminished sound. But I think it has pretty nice chord progressions

You sir, are a theory god. How did you learn all this?
@seandaniel238 жыл бұрын
+WysteriaGuitar Thanks! You know it's not something I learned all at once, in fact I had a tough time picking it up. But over the years I tried being more thoughtful about it and I started recognizing all the different patterns and it started to make sense. The great thing is that once you fundamentally understand it, it builds on itself and becomes so much easier :)
