Here’s another crazy fact. The Chicago Street race only had around 100k less viewers than the Indy 500. NASCAR has its issues, but it’s still king.
@PhotonBread
@PhotonBread 8 ай бұрын
I think the difference there is that it was the inaugural Chicago Street Race, whereas it was the 107th Indy 500. The fact that many people still watch Indy after seeing it 106 times says more about Indy than the first ever NASCAR street race, in a major city, on a holiday weekend, with a huge Motorsport name from across the pond 🤷‍♂️
@DemonCipher13
@DemonCipher13 8 ай бұрын
Look at the stands for the Indy 500 last year, compared to any given Cup race, but certainly compared to Chicago. Over 300,000. Compared to around 50-60 thousand for Chicago. With the way they are moving, NASCAR won't remain where it is for long. Especially with limiting access, locking things behind streaming. It isn't the right shoe for this foot.
@nickmangona48
@nickmangona48 8 ай бұрын
@DemonCipher13 The Indy 500 has 300,000 people every year because is the most historical and prestigious race in the entire world. Any other IndyCar race does not get 300,000 fans. And streaming is the future, whether you like it or not, is the future. It's not a bad move at all.
@DemonCipher13
@DemonCipher13 8 ай бұрын
@nickmangona48 Listen to what Eric said. 80% of NASCAR's audience is over 50. Do you really think that generation is running to get these streaming services? No. NASCAR'S outreach to new fans simply isn't working. You're right. Streaming is the future. And in many ways, the present. But right now, for NASCAR, access needs to be the priority. If you stream and televise simultaneously, you broaden the audience, and don't punish your core. The issue of new fans can be dealt with, but not at the expense of your core. They're getting older, dying, even. Meaning those numbers will not normalize. They'll continue to dwindle. Access. Access is the most important question NASCAR can answer right now, and this deal does not do it.
@nickmangona48
@nickmangona48 8 ай бұрын
@DemonCipher13 It's still not a bad move. NASCAR needed to change what they were doing BAD. Half the reason people have stopped watching is because broadcasts had not changed one bit since 2001. This is a step in the right direction. And If NASCAR's gonna be anywhere in the next 20-30 years, they need to stop bending over to the older generation and try to get more younger viewers, because the older crowd is not gonna be around forever.

@johnthefalcon2903 8 ай бұрын
@AfterX1 Peacock is trash but for racing fans that don't watch a lot of other TV, $6 a month is a bargain over paying for something like Sling or KZbin TV to get USA Network. For Indycar races I just watch a driver's in car feed on the Indycar app during the commercials. It gets me through USA races, still use antenna for network NBC races. $6 month for the full Indycar and IMSA seasons including practice, qualifying, and feeder series is good bargain.

I usually stream from Abu Dhabi. No commericals, they carry every Truck, Xfinity and Cup race. It's not an illegal stream, it's what the network chooses to stream. They're called ADSports. @@johnthefalcon2903 You don't even need to have a VPN. I love watching the cameras between commercials, reminds me of watching races on satellite in the late 80s early 90s, but without the commentators prepping for the next segments.

I have been saying for years NASCAR should have grown their app. We used to be able to watch the race from a few camera angles, as well as in car cameras. NASCAR could have had a tier system charging a higher monthly fee to give the subscriber access to a NASCAR exclusive broadcast on the app. This would have been a direct income for the sport. You still have ads. Or allow for an ad free subscription. NASCAR should have wrote it into their tv deal clause, allowing them the rights to produce their own app based content. This would be huge for fans. Everything would be at the finger tips of their fans.

I think the biggest thing about streaming everyone seems to miss is how it effects the schedule, with streaming we don't have to worry about being in something else's time slot, we have a race that gets delayed? If the track can handle it now NASCAR doesn't have pressure to end early. We have a lot of late cautions and we're pushing towards an OT restart string? Nothing else is coming on so let the boys at it! Wanna experiment with new tracks and such? Well viewers numbers don't matter because ads don't do as well monetarily on streaming platforms as they do with cable as is. It is a slippery slope and the hit to some fans wallets sucks but streaming opens up A LOT we aren't thinking of.

I really don't like this deal, mainly because it now splits just the cup series of NASCAR to 8 different channels. My dad is a life long racing and NASCAR fan. He moved to the states from the middle of nowhereville, Makay, Australia back in the 80s because he was a top fuel drag racer and loved NASCAR. I spent my entire life growing up, racing gokarts, onto dirt cars and the younger ranks of NASCAR. While I was growing up, both of our lives were completely and utterly consumed by NASCAR and various other racing organizations to the point where I would miss over half of all school days in order to take part in a race half way across the coutry every week. My dad, has absolutely ZERO idea what channels NASCAR is going to be on and doesn't have subscriptions to the 5 different networks that you need in order to watch every race. A man, who spent his entire life in racing, who flew across the world in a time when Australia didn't even have color tv and the closest airport was a 6 hour drive on a dirt path to Melbourne, in order to be closer to it, can not even be bothered to learn the new tv schedule because it is too complicated. TLDR: This new tv deal is all over the place, and will lose viewship for the sport.

My biggest question is will Prime and TNT produce their own race coverage? TNT and NBC shared resources in the 2000s, and with how challenging and expensive it is to broadcast NASCAR I would have to wonder if these broadcast partners plan on sharing resources again. Potential scenarios include: 1. FOX produces the 5 Prime Video races, NBC produces the 5 TNT broadcasts 2. Prime and TNT share resources and those 10 races look the same 3. NASCAR Productions produces the 10 races for Prime Video and TNT 4. Prime Video does their own thing. Perhaps an alternate feed or two like they do with their NFL broadcasts 5. Least likely option but with the investments in the new NASCAR Productions facility and NP already doing the CW Xfinity broadcasts, does NASCAR follow F1's model and produce a world feed that the FOX/Prime/TNT/NBC adds their graphics and talent like Sky Sports does? I DON'T think this will happen but I'd have to think it has at least been considered. Looking forward to something new for a change when it comes to NASCAR on TV. Just a shame we gotta wait well over a year for it.

So, I think one of the reasons they are having lower viewing is that a lot have cut the cord, and the ability to get FS1 also costs, along with these other other streaming Apps you have to pay for. Been a NASCAR fan all my 67 yrs, but I turns me away when most of the races are broadcast elsewhere. You bring most of it back to regular TV, your viewing i believe will go back up. I know it's business but, without us that will turn more away, which it has done sometimes with me.

It's worth pointing out the the TV deal adds up to 38 races. If the 14 fox races include the all star and clash, it likely means they're giving up 2 points races, one of them being the coke 600, since the coke 600 is the 16th race of the 2024 schedule including the clash and all star. If fox is getting 14 points races, it means nascar plans to expand the schedule adding 2 more races. Either way, it implies nascar is gonna make some big changes to the 2025 schedule

I'm old enough to remember when we had TNN, CBS, TBS, and ESPN all in the same season, not to mention when things would get booted to ESPN2 (Which I didn't get at that time) It really does feel like I'm in this weird spot where I'm old enough to remember how popular NASCAR was in the 90's and most discourse I see now acts like it wasn't until after the original FOX & NBC deal in 2001 and Talladega Nights is when it became mainstream. Point I'm getting at is, it's not like we haven't had this many broadcast partners before, and I argue that at that time, it was big enough and promoted much better back then that people could find it. I get that more elderly people will have issues finding the Amazon races, but as far as the casual person or someone finding the races, the broadcast partners need to start promoting better. I never see ads promoting on social media anything outside the Daytona 500, but you can bet I will get a million different football ads every day for NFL and college when I don't even follow anything football related

speaking for my country, likely not much. Nascar has never been a super product here in Brazil, so we don't get a bidding war for rights. Generally we have only one broadcaster. Our current deal ends next year as well, my sincere bet is that Bandsports (our broadcaster here) retains the rights. There are no serious clash with F1 coverage (they get practices and qualis for F1), so I don't see a main reason for them to give the rights away hapeening.

Not a fan of bringing in Amazon for streams. They've basically become the Disney of live sports. Too bad NASCAR wasn't willing to air races on TV and offer a streaming package for the whole season instead of breaking it up like this.

@@johnhaas2523 I get that, but they're basically approaching this broadcast deal the same way teams approach car sponsorship these days. NASCAR is facing an identity crisis, and fans have been complaining that they can't even tell cars apart because team colors change weekend from weekend. A sporadic broadcasting schedule is going to make things worse and harder for fans to follow IMO. They really should have bit the bullet and took a smaller deal for less networks. I feel like this new contract is going to come back to bite them.

As a Canadian I have concerns. I watch through TSN (their streaming service not through their cable channels) who picks up the current races from both fox and nbc. Decent price. $22 a month or so last time I checks. I have prime, but tnt…I don’t think I can even get that here…hopefully tsn picks it up so I still have access to a full season.

The new tv deal has effectively priced me out of watching any races. I can’t afford 100 dollars to line the pockets of NASCAR. Guess I will have to depend on KZbin to get what I can find for free after the race is over. ITS ALL ABOUT GREED IN MY OPINION. l love racing but not like I used to. It’s a rich man’s sport and it has finally priced me out. By the way I’m 79 years old and have enjoyed racing for over 40 years but no more after all this B. S. If they loose my generation and aren’t attracting the younger generation then NASCAR may be doomed.

Eric: Thanks for the break-down. Easy answers here for Nascar: wanna win over the 'younger audience'? drop the full-screen commercials. ALL of soccer goes Commercial-free for 45+ minutes each half. F1 uses 1 sponsor for the US broadcast in ESPN and goes FULL Commercial free and not just the race but all post-race things too, until champagne happens. NFL, unless it's an injury RARELY goes full-screen commercials. STOP going full-screen during green flags, don't come back for JUST pit stops of lead lap cars when yellow. FIX THE BROADCASTING RULES. You have a chance to CHANGE EVERYTHING with Amazon races... there is ZERO EXCUSES for ads when doing STREAMING-ONLY. Also, for the cable channels, PLEASE for the love of GOD stop showing the same 4-6 ads for EVERY. F%&*ING. Commercial break. 25% of the races on over-the-air channels is F$%&ing pathetic.

just disagree regarding the NFL, there is a ton of full screen commercials. During green flags it's outright a disrespect. Here in Brazil for F1 we are getting split screen for F1 and soccer on free and cable. It's not really a lot, so I can't complain it. If they start doing full screen commercials in green for F1 here, people will riot. For soccer? No one is crazy enough to even think about thinking such thing.

As an F1 fan in addition to NASCAR, I can tell you that NASCAR has a better TV deal than F1 which is saying something considering the fact that ESPN promotes the heck out of F1. This is because in my view ESPN does not put any effort into their F1 coverage & simply uses Sky Sports's coverage (which isn't that good, especially when compared to what SPEED & then NBC put in before ESPN took over in 2017). The only good thing about F1 on ESPN is that it is commercial free which is something NASCAR could try in their new deal. I also think that NASCAR has a way better TV deal than Indycar which now faces a very uncertain future when it comes to its next TV deal that begins at the same time as this deal because it is very likely that NBC (Indycar's current TV partner) will dump them because they seem to prefer NASCAR over Indycar. There is also the fact that apart from the Indy 500, Indycar draws significantly less viewers & makes less ad revenue than NASCAR does for NBC even though all of the Indycar schedule is currently on the NBC family of networks.

This is a follow up kinda to the creed news. Since jgr started having 2 or more full time drivers , 1 has always lagged behind (7th-13th) and 1 being a championship contender. Exceptions being 2020 where despite 7 wins from Harrison and jones and 0 from Riley , they were all mid . And 2021 where hemric didn’t win till the last race while Harrison and jones were once again mid and winless. 2018,2019,2022,2023 all had 1 guy be the ass kicker and 1 guy just run 10th. Of course for 3 of those seasons it was Brandon jones and another was a rookie Sammy smith but still. Something to look at with chandler and creed .

One thing that I don’t understand about the more money argument is that 150 million Americans have access to Amazon prime video already, right? And as you mentioned about the cable packages, if you have FS1, you’re likely to have TNT. I don’t see that it increases costs for most Americans by all that much. Will some people have to become new subscribers because of this? Yes, I’m sure they will. But it would be foolish of NASCAR and a disservice to the teams if they did not take this deal. The other thing that makes me chuckle is the notion that it is going to be complicated to find which channel a race will be on. It’s 2023 and very nearly 2024. You have nearly unlimited access to information with a 2 1/2 x 5”rectangular block that settles into the palm of your hand. I don’t care what anyone says. Finding what channel a sports program is on is not difficult. And if you say that it is, more power to you.

My racing buddies and myself have witnessed first hand nascar leaving their true fans,the fans that put them where they are, behind . 😢, from squeezing out tent camping, squeezing out small campers to now reaching out of the tv to charge us an attendance fee to watch !!! What the what ? Heck I live less than 50 miles from Wilkesboro and can't afford to go to the all star race because you can't buy single tickets. Only weekend packages, which means it makes sense to camp all weekend rite? Yeah, rite then you got to pay for that. It's all about the money . Guess I'll settle for the cw , and x-finity 😊

As cool as it is to see NASCAR has so many companies interested, wouldn’t it make more sense to have 3 partners, a free to air option to benefit those who are in the low-income bracket, the cable option to bring in some of the big dollars, and a streaming option that goes worldwide, such as Amazon Prime, that allows those of us overseas, such as in Australia and New Zealand, to be able to watch it and directly support NASCAR instead of watching it on our Fox Sports to Kayo Sports, which is basically recycling the Fox or NBC coverage. This also means that those who are watching know they are getting the whole season, and they don’t have to go looking, or buy multiple subscriptions. That is just my 2 bobs worth.

In the new media deal, everyone wins except the fans. That is because there is no voice for the fans in these business meetings. So, if you have sling blue, you have access to all of the cable channels. The broadcast channels can be had with the addiction of an air TV device and a good antenna. This only leaves Amazon. I am amused by people who put the cost of prime membership as an additional streaming cost. You may not be aware of this, but Amazon has another side hustle called Online Shopping! I do not believe most people subscribe for the online streaming service. In fact, I would suggest most subscribers are unaware of this streaming service. I would love to see some data about its utilization, but I would believe it is below 20% of all Amazon users. So, keep up the silly season content.
