You made it so easy to understand with just 11 mins vid! The son of man art always make me feel something. quite comfortable and peaceful. with your analysis that says everything in this picture contradicts one another it makes more sense why i feel comfy while looking at it. it feel like it is represents the feeling of not belonging anywhere and nothing around feel real and make any sense. I like how straight forward this painting is and how mysterious it is at the same time. The painting could have been so boring if there's nothing to cover their face. also Why your channel is so underrated!!? you got new sub man. keep going!

The fact the artist sow his mother's suicide when her dress was over her face and he was only 14 years old... The fact that he reduces his pain through painting and I remember the artist Ahlam Mostaghanemi who says exact words that explain his feelings: “Something in my childhood happened without me even realizing it! Everything will revolve around it until the last moment of my life”.

Whatever the academic consensus reading of this painting is (never wanted to distort my own view in this manner;), to me it's always been the apple of knowledge. Mainly scientific knowledge that obscures our perception of things to such an extent that we are no longer able to see what we are looking at. Words, concepts, principles, physical properties and speculative correlations.. and suddenly the thing, on which our gaze is resting, is written down as a formal formula (look at the clothes), reduced to an impersonal content. The wall between our understanding and things has been there all the time (phenomenology makes good use of that notion; phenomenon, φαίνω - gr. to appear) , and behind every single thing there's an ocean we can never fathom.. Such an interpretation would even be parallel to the general readings of Magritte's more obvious paintings, like "This is not a pipe" or a "Not to be reproduced" (double meaning: forbidden to be reproduced or impossible to do so).

Also disconcerting is the shifting perspective. The figure and background appear flat - as if seen through a telescopic lens - while the lines on top of the wall indicate an extreme wide-angle perspective with a vanishing point (sea facing?) somewhere behind the figure.

For me, the idea is that most people ignore what’s right in front them (the apple) because they’re so obsessed with things beyond their perception & understanding (the face).

@@brainlights5975 oh nice. I think the writer of squid game knows Magritte's art and, in some way, get inspired by it . A video I saw pointed out a scene in the house of the front man where you can see a book of Magritte's paintings and one of his paintings on the wall. I think is Dominion of light, an impossible landscape where the sky is from day and the city is from night.

One thing for sure, this painting triggers my OCD in a different and weird way. The floating apple infront of his face, the unbottoned button, he seems to be hiding his left hand for whatever reason, maybe it's the button of his clothes that came off, cause someone this fancy for a photo is highly unlikely not to check himself if his suit is buttoned. But then again, why IS his elbow pointing away to the sea? For all we know this might just be real. Just some tall man who wants to take a photo but his bad luck and calamities refuse to give him that. The broken button, the bad weather, if the apple is in motion and is falling, then we can assume this is a bad day for him to take a picture. This is just my thoughts, I'm not good at art.

As with all good enigmas, false clues abound. For me, Magritte speaks, in this painting, of what is all the time before our eyes and yet we do not perceive it. The obvious, which only certain yogis, saints and shamans see.

The whole objects obviously refer to Genesis 1:3-13 (day 2 & 3) about the creation of the heaven ( skies, cloud, horizon), dry land (earth/wall) and kind of fruit trees. The self-personification as a trees with immature fruit means the painting is a humble work of the painter wich also showed by dark clouds and the wall. The title is only the clue to the refferences and simply idea to pursuade people to the right perspective of morality standard (with the beginning book of the Bible).

Great analysis! I agree there is definitely a religious reading of the piece, even though I may have not given it enough attention in the video... To be honest, I don't think I would've ever picked up on these 😅. But once again, it just goes to show how many different ways there are of interpreting the painting! Thank you for watching and leaving your thoughts 💙
@rioumbu2161
@rioumbu2161 3 жыл бұрын
@@brainlights5975yes you're right, it's a phylosophical view rather than religion's matters . Seems to me that Magritte wanted to tell us about what a difficult era he's lived especially on humanities issues (signed by unsymmetrical hands). And the respond from the community about it was only a young greeny fruit as the final works or expressions.

That's a really interesting way of framing it, I can definitely see the apple symbolising immaturity or inexperience, which you could extend to represent humanity's cluelessness about the World they are in. I like your train of thought! Thank you so much for sharing 💙

It is pretty ambiguous, I think it could definitely be a possibility, but maybe it's reading too much into it. Good job; I actually love the painting but I'd be cautious in applying the title of genius to Magritte; innovative, yes; creative, no doubt; genius, hmm - maybe (this is not a criticism of the artist; I love his work too) its more a comment about labelling things and people; what's the value in that? Lets just enjoy the painting and the analysis. Thanks very much. BTW, I think the real value of this painting is to make us feel uncomfortable, a key step in awakening (just a thought). We'll never really know what the hell he actually meant to say or accomplish with this art work and yet its a compelling piece of work that holds our attention and is worthy of videos and debate; art is awesome, thanks for sharing! 😎

Some interesting observations, but by referring to the man as "elegantly" dressed, you miss a main point. The man is not elegantly dressed, but dressed, rather, as plain office clerk, a functionary, as anonymous as the similarly outfitted men 'raining' down in the "Golconda", or any number of Magritte works with this male figure.
