Mr. Bannister would be better off not using the airplane analogy to help explain the Seam Shifted Wake, because for airplane flight, the Bernoulli Principle is a very minor effect in that regard. Newton's Third Law is the major governing explanation there. One can create a paper airplane which flies, but of course does not possess cambered tear-drop leading edges (thus, no Bernoulli effect). An airplane's wing has an "angle of attack" that produces the necessary lift combined with the requisite speed to achieve flight. Understanding wings and flight is as easy as sticking your arm out the window of a moving vehicle and angling the leading edge of your hand up and seeing that hand move upward. The flowing air moves the hand up while simultaneously the hand moves the flowing air downward; i.e. Newton's Third Law--for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. Kids can understand when explained to them that a back spinning fastball experiences more air pressure on the bottom of the baseball than on the top of the baseball.

Im an adult and I dont get that at all. Ill be sticking with my airplane analogy thankyou :)

The thing is he isn’t talking about a back spinning baseball creating lift. He’s talking about throwing the ball in a way that the seams rotation is irregular creating low pressure on the arm side of the ball, which is how MLB pitchers are now throwing sinkers with 20 inches of movement. So backspin and magnus effect have literally nothing to do with it

I was only suggesting he not use Bernoulli's Principle to explain airplane flight. Throwing a sinker has everything to do with backspin and the magnus effect.

When I used to grip a ball like a two seamer, I actually got insane glove side run on it, for whatever reason.

How to grip and release the 2 seam waker ball?

You need to use a slow motion video of your pitching mechanics to see how your fingers release the baseball at that split second. After you get a good idea of how your fingers apply the force and spin on the ball, you try to change the grip so that you can make the ball spin with the big black dot staying on top during the video.

So it is not about the grip, but get to know how you release before working out the grip that makes the ball spin the way it should be.

Others’ grip may not work when you do it because of different release angles or wrist movements.

When are we getting a nolan ryan deep dive? I would be on top of that like a nolan ryan fastball is on top of a hitter

The airplane analogy seems like it would make sense in a knuckleball, but how does that apply if the ball is rotating so quickly. In a fraction of a second a 180° turn and rotation of the ball will offset the physics that happened 1/2 a rotation ago.

If you aren't trying to pronate the pitch would you say it's almost coming out like a cutter?

@@treadathletics I searched your channel and couldn't find a video explaining how it's different than Magnus or Bernoulli. Could you provide a link? TIA.

We don't have any videos about magnus, but Dr. Barton Smith has some great research about SSW and is kind of the forefather of the concept. This was supposed to be explained for youngsters, but i'm old and don't get it 🤣 (I mean I get the effect in a general sense, but not how to apply it in an actual pitch)
