Maybe it’s just me, but this parable is less about the seed (or idea), but rather, it’s more about the soil or ground in which the seed fell. If you don’t agree with me, then I encourage you to read further in the chapter where Jesus explains the meaning of the parable.

You’re correct. If the bird gets you, you feed the soul but not the body If the rock gets you you feed the body but not the soul. If the thorn gets you you are ignoring the other half of reality to have a bow rather than a thorn And if you feed the body and feed the soul, you get Chinese bamboo 🤭

The parable is about the sower. Disciples were to scatter the gospel like seeds so that it could grow wherever the soil was fertile. It overran the Roman Empire.

Yes... the seed is the spirit of a human. The spirits, dead or reborn, we have are perfect. They are perfect because they are created in God's perfect image. Our souls(personalities, emotions, wills,) and bodies are imperfect. The seed(or spirit) are perfect and have potential. But need good ground to grow. We are all given a spirit with potential but the calling here is to help provide solid ground for other seeds(spirits) to grow. Also, many lessons within. The shallow soil are the Christians who claim Christ but it doesnt reflect in the way they live. The thorns are the people around us that stunt our spirtual growth.

When the claim is the God said it, people tend to grow through great pains to make it 'infitnately deep'. A child could tell a story about walking to school, you could replace the narrator with God, and a religious person would make 'infinately deep' meaning out of it.

It is quite an in depth conversation and parable that could be construed in many ways as they were discussing, though as a layman like myself could think of a comparable situation that would, or could, apply, and then feel like I’m really stretching for a meaning and then totally discount my idea, never knowing if I was on the right track or not! I will pray for more knowledge for better comprehension of all the stories of Jesus Christ!

This meeting is a perfect example of the parable itself. The parable itself is a seed that has been sown everywhere. Each of these people there are the soil. The interpretation, and what each of them focuses on, are the fruits. I'm afraid they focus too much on the details and miss the elephant in the room. The seed is a living word that is sown onto each soul, and it is the openness of each soul that determines the fertility of the soil. But the purpose of the parables is not just to understand them. Their discussions are of great value for sure, but what they lack is a living application of the words. We are supposed to look into our souls and think if we are a fertile soil. Unfortunately, it seems like I'm not and I have to work on myself. And that's the point, not just understanding it intellectually, but contemplating on how that personally relates to us and what we can do to become better soil.

Yup. We(our souls and bodies) are the ground(remember how Adam was created from the ground). The seed is our spirit. We all share the same spirit but have different souls. Our spirits are perfect, created in Gods image. Our souls and bodies are not perfect because they are sinful. Adam's spirit(which connected him to God) died when he sinned. His soul and body remained.

To all of my fellow bothers and sister in Christ struggling with this explanation of the text, I implore you to take a moment and humble yourself. What these men are talking about is just one more point of view of the text, and is still in line with what Christ was teaching. Sew good seeds into good ground. The word is an idea, the gospel is a good idea! It’s the best idea ever, it’s an enterprise no one else has ever come close to accomplish, and our God was the only one to do it perfectly “what if I come down and die to save all humanity? What if those who were then saved, went to try and bring others to me?” Christ is trying to teach his disciples how to take ideas in general and plant them in good ground. Of course, we read this and understand that he came with a mission and so we place that mission in front of him, but what if our eternal God was not also speaking to us about the salvation that was to come but how to also conduct ourselves in life at the same time? It’s almost like the parable is vague and mysterious enough for more than one perspective to understand it and it still be true under those different lights. If you can’t handle that, I think you’ve come to the wrong place for the 1 dimensional biblical interpretation 😂😂😂

As one person said in the comments “the seed is the Word of God (The Gospel, or as Catholics would say, the Kerygma) and the soils are the hearts of men.” The parable shows that one type of person, the good soil, hears the Word of God, and receives Jesus’ offer of Salvation, and Repents and receives the gift of the Holy Spirit. The other three types of people are lost, and remain damned.

It's interesting how the parable highlights the different responses to the Word of God, showing that the condition of one's heart plays a crucial role. Do you think that the soil represents our actions and choices over time, or is it something more internal, like a person's mindset or willingness to change? What do you believe determines whether someone’s heart is more like good soil or rocky ground?
@DouglasKindred
@DouglasKindred 19 күн бұрын
Good Question - I believe that it is “something internal.” I’ve heard many sermons on this over the last 50 years and I know many people in all four categories. Jesus describes them very well in Matthew 13:18-23. The most difficult and most heartbreaking are the people whose hearts are like the wayside. The seeds cannot penetrate at all and the devil quickly snatches it away. These are people whose hearts are hardened against God and that is generally because of Pride! It can be the intellectual type who thinks he’s too smart for God and this is all nonsense, or it can be self righteous pride, e.g. “I’m a good person.” These folks tend to resist the conviction of the Holy Spirit. And of course no one can be converted unless they feel the conviction of the Holy Spirit and are broken over their sin, and Repent. I find these folks to be extremely difficult to reach. The ones on Rocky soil have a chance. They understand the truth of the Gospel but turned from it due to persecution and suffering, but they still know it’s true. So Jesus leaves the 99 and goes after the one lost sheep, convicts him, and brings him home. Same with the person who who “got choked out by the thorns”. They too know the truth but fell away due to riches and pleasure of the world, so through sound preaching or hearing testimony of believers they can be brought back into the fold. But those by the wayside… Oh my. As Paul said, if our gospel is veiled it is veiled to those who are perishing, whose eyes have been blinded by ‘the god of this age’ (Satan). I would hope as people age, getting closer to death they would be more open to hearing, comprehending and believing the Gospel but I find the opposite. The old person who is proud seems to become more and more entrenched in their unbelief. Billy Graham frequently quoted Proverbs, “He who stiffens his neck repeatedly will be suddenly cut off and that without remedy.” Wayside people make me weep for their souls!

My interpretation of it is he is talking about people… he is making a metaphor for the environment one grows up in… the seed is us while the soil is life and love… like the seed we don’t get to choose were we land in this life, some grow up in soil barren of love and some grow up in the thorns with their life choked out of them…. If your lucky you get to land in a patch a good soil with good people around you who love you and you grow up wanting to see the same for others… and those who benefit from the good upbringing are benefiting from the fruit of the tree that is you… while you are 1 person you can spread love and hope to many others by simply making sure you take care of the environment around you (the community) and making sure that when the next seed is planted that their is love in the soil for future generations of our human seed…..

Well, one very important thing is how that the parable shows how that God doesn't cause everything to sovereignly happen. If God does, then the kinds of ground wouldnt matter and the seed would produce no matter what. But it is the heart (ground) of a person that determines whether or not that God's Word(the seed), produces in their life and not God(the Power).

The seed is the potential of life. The parable is trying to point out how fortunate you are to have been planted in the right soil and planted well. There are many that don’t even make it to birth, there are many born into circumstance where they can’t survive and there are many born with disabilities and disease. But most are born ‘planted’ well. This parable is about gratitude. In my opinion, of course! 🙏

I found a perfect real life example of this parable that you can try for yourself. So I know Gods word supports the idea that “there’s no need to rush” It takes faith to actually live by this however because sometimes you can’t quite see the benefits of following this word in the moment. So I wake up and am late for work. But I decide to take a nice shower because there’s no need to rush. Then I go to shave, and this is another spot where I may be like “well shaving is not as essential” but I decide to shave too. Also I put music on. I cleaned up in my room a touch but not seriously, then left and I had to walk out of the way to get coffee. I did so. Oh also before this I could sort of feel my bosses voice in my head getting angry at me and at this point I almost dropped it and started rushing. After getting coffee I could have turned back and got on my e-bike and I would be able to safely make it on time, instead I slowly drank the coffee (well ok not slow by most standards) and walked down a city block to get on a street car. Now I’m here typing this message. I have caved at any of these spots in the past, even before the shower. I have to have some faith will work, somehow someway. I’ll keep you posted.

I don't think this story is so much about the seeds of ideas, but planting the seeds of "understandings. The reason why Jesus says let those who have ears hear is because when we truly understand the teachings, we will plant the seeds properly, and they will root and have much fruit. But if we don't truly understand the teachings, then those seeds just wash away.

Yea.... the "ears to hear" means a willingness to learn. When Jesus said this he knew there were people in the crowd who really just wanted to "see a show" but had no real desire to "listen". Not much different today. People go to church week after week hearing but not listening.

How receptive are we to God or the “Word of God”. This illustrates the different types of people and how they act in their daily lives even though they have heard and know that Christ is “ The Way, the Truth and the Life”. Many would rather focus on honor, power, pleasure and wealth or the things of this world. We squander what we have been given for our own selfish needs, and do not use the life we are given to spread the good news of the gospel, as good servants should. Do we turn a deaf ear to God, or do we allow ourselves to be transformed by the word of God so as to properly receive His Grace so that He can transform our lives from within and we can bear fruit abundantly!

the seed represents the good news, and the different types of soils are different types of people and the reasons the good news cannot grow in their heart .Its an emphasis on how the cares of this word steal away the joy of the good news of the gospel. it is an especially good parable for disciples as it is a hard truth to accept when someone just won't accept the good news that you bring this is why most Christians are hard to deal with they can't let their good word do the job they have to hear you submit to what they are saying.

There were two guys on crosses next to Jesus when he was being crucified. One of the guys repented and accepted Jesus, and Jesus forgave him so that he would be received in heaven. This specifically displays that its never too late. That guy wasted 99.999...% of his life but when God called, he said yes. From a materialistic standpoint it would still seem ole boy's life was a waste. Yet, here we are still reading about him 2000 years later. I dont consider that a failure. He obeyed God and is now with God, thats success. "Success" is finding Gods purpose for our lives. And Gods timing is always perfect.

As for the boy and for any other person who leaves the Church based on the actions of the clergy or laymen or state of the Church, then they will not make it to heaven as they’ve rejected the faith because of the actions of a member in the faith when they should’ve made that judgement on whether they thought the Catholic faith was the truth or not.

Hey Mr Peterson, I asked the holy spirit for conformation on ur personal energy and this is the conformation i received. The reading came from Third Eye tarot titled "two people want you. .one loves you and the other is serious and wants commitment with you" u are the one it's mostly talking about ur personal energy but it also mentions the group. One question, if this is true of who you, and it is, who's energy have u been standing in for the last few years of u watering my seeds? I can answer that for u if u can't figure it out? It is my energy that u are claiming as urs have a nice day

Faith is the water which makes the seeds grow. God is so multidimensional, we could spend a lifetime unpacking His mysteries and even then we can't really grasp them. Ofcourse I don't know, but I think that the ultimate goal on personal level could be theosis (Eastern Catholic and Eastern Orthodox)/divinization (Latin Catholic). That is full Union with God.

Another important part of the parable is the sower, which represents the disciples. In chapter 13 Christ was explaining to them how to the kingdom of heaven will grow and develop. The disciples were sent out with the gospel (seed) into Israel. Many would not receive the gospel, but lest they be discouraged, Christ told them in this parable that there would be various different types of people (ground) who would not receive his teaching. This parable helped the disciples understand the reaction of the people to the message of the gospel.

The parable holds the understanding of salvation. If it were only the good soil(the 4th one) it would not be a mystery. The parable is in 3 gospels but the secret isn't revealed until Luke where most seekers would graze by it reading it for the 3rd time. In Luke 8:12 we read: The ones along the path are those who have heard; then the devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts, so that they may not believe and be saved. We do not get that clear understanding in the sower parables by Matthew and Mark. So the 3 soils that receive(believe)and grow, from the word are saved and the 4th produces fruit. Only those of the 1st soil who never believed are not saved. This is why it is a mystery and even the great minds like Peterson struggle to see it.

Jesus in this story is speaking to his disciples to explain to them why so few people who hear his teaching and seem to respond fail to continue in the path he is laying out for them; it has to do with their lack of spiritual capacity. The Bible uses fish and bird to symbolize ideas as such. Jesus uses seeds here more in the sense of a broader sense of inspiration at the heart level.

@ I very much appreciate this whole series and the material JP is putting out. I actually don’t know every individual in the panel or they haven’t spoken up much so I don’t hear anyone drawing them back into the meaning of the text. From observation of the clips, philosophers and psychologists can read so much into the text that it goes beyond understanding or over the meaning of the text. Granted, I think this is the whole point of the series, but I think the discussion should be grounded and rooted in the meaning before it’s elaborated or being read into. Without tracing and stemming from what the text actually says, it can veer off way too much and the meaning gets lost. Again, the series is meant for that, but it would be helpful to start with what the text actually means then take off from there. I think New Testsment Bibical scholars like DA Carson, Andy Naselli, or Thomas Schreiner would be a great addition.

We are the soil. What kind of soil is the question. But do not lose hope if you are not the good soil at the end of the parable. Because birds can be scared away, rocks and thorns can be removed. I also believe the soil can be moved to a good spot. Christian children today are likely to be potted soil, the seed can grow but is limited until it is transfered into the ground to become a fully fruitful tree.

what is humility? why is it a virtue to be worked towards? isn't it "to be teachable"? the opposite of pride, being unteachable. with a parable, those who are teachable, learn what is being taught, while the proud just hear a story until a day may come, likely while they suffer, where they might see a "mustard seed" and in that moment suddenly understand the lesson because of their personal experience. For them, the lesson is more than a planted idea, it's life changing. Parables have that ripple effect, of an eternal lesson, that can teach those who are ready, when they are ready, in the way that is personal to them. And often impossible to impart to others, and only believable by being the living example of who they have become.

It is not a simple parable to understand. Because Knowledge is received through experience; the individual - through other sources of wisdom - 'puts the teaching into practice'. And by daily, hourly, moment by moment cultivation, one's consciousness never waivers from the deliberate, selective, conscious activity required to birth a given 'seed' into fruition. That is not something to just casually brush off as being so easily understood that even a child can understand, without having in hand the fruit which is claimed to have been birthed by such a practice, transferable Knowledge to allow others to freely choose their own growth, and the means by which to 'bond with' the Source of such Creative Potential...It is something to be thoroughly examined, and to be given an 'attention to detail' that, heretofore, may never have been given to any other pursuit.

To translate "logos" as "idea" is partly correct but also partly misleading because of modern assumptions regarding the notion of "idea" (as unreal abstraction). (As JP comments, to translate the term as "word" can also be misleading if we assume that it is reducible to some facile notion of utterance.) @andrewmcgee5266 is indeed correct to note also that the purpose of the parable is to compare different conditions of soil that are like different conditions of listeners. The ultimate goal of both analogies, however, is to recover the biblical image of a garden to depict human cooperation in the reception of divine act of interpersonal self-giving. A full exposition of these analogies appears in the third and fourth chapters of _The Lost Seeds of Learning_ (Classical Academic Press, 2021).

Please help me understand. This story speaks of seed that falls into unsown land. Some withers, some lives weakly, and some grows many times stronger than the sown seeds. He emphasizes the fruit yield on the last set in contrast to sown seeds. Are seeds people who have been cast out of society in various conditions of living? Some doomed while a remaining third might thrive more than expected? I heard his story but I'm still unpacking it.

The seed is the Word of God, the soil is the state of heart. Stony is stubborn and does not change - the word sprouts but dies because it wasn't properly planted. The birds taking from the ground are those that do not listen - they never gave the word a chance. The thorns are people that are open to all ideas - they cannot hold contradictions, they hold on to sin, so the sprouted plant dies.

Many times in the sermon on the mount, Jesus said you have heard it said or something like that. Who was he speaking of here? He was speaking of the religious leaders who were leading the people astray. This parable in the end, demonstrates that those who truly believe continue in the faith. Jesus was not only telling this to the disciples and others who heard it in their time, it was for all time. This includes us. On the day of Pentecost, when the Holy Spirit came to dwell in those who believe, great boldness and zeal was increased because all the things Jesus said, and all the things that especially the disciples knew of from the Old Testament began to make perfect sense. We need to know this, as we share the gospel, we should expect to have these reactions from those we share it with, and from those who make a profession of Christ. Belief that God, through the Holy Spirit, and because of the ransom that was paid by Jesus on the cross and His resurrection, this is the gospel. Remember this, everyone is dead in trespasses and sin, something must happen for us to believe. That something, is a new heart. God takes out the heart of stone and replaces it with a heart of flesh, (a new heart.) This new heart desires to glorify God. This heart, reacts to Jesus words with obedience. 28 "Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and YOU WILL FIND REST FOR YOUR SOULS. (Matthew 11:28, NASB) Far from perfect obedience, direction of your life changes. Direction, not perfection. The heart that believes, has nothing to boast about. Eph 2:8-9. For it is the gift of God. God gets all the glory. Know this, some will believe, and we as His children, get to be a part of that kingdom building work. Some water, some till the ground, but God wakes up the heart. Father in this group of men, there are those like the religious leaders of their day whose only authority is to quote others who they agree with. Let these see that the only authority that is trustworthy is the very Word of God. Please awaken those who know of you, but do not know you. As our Lord said in Matthew 7:23 And then I will declare to them, 'I never knew you; DEPART FROM ME, YOU WHO PRACTICE LAWLESSNESS.' The (Matthew 7:23, NASB) Jesus can only know you once. If He ever knows you, He knows you forever. Jesus can not say I use to know you!!! Examine yourself!!! This verse is for me, for you. Test yourselves to see if you are in the faith; examine yourselves! Or do you not recognize this about yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you--unless indeed you fail the test? (2 Corinthians 13:5, NASB) The first 3 soils failed the test. Don’t be one of those first three!!!

My interpretation of this parable is that this is the story of all of our human roots at birth .. others in this chat have mentioned things like God is the word and the soil is human nature ... this seems absolutely correct and I agree. My addition to this conversation is just that i tend to think this is the story of how you start as a baby. Some are born into rich lifestyles, horrible circumstances, etc... some will grow in shallow soil .. and they will have a weak root. Some will be born with a rich spiritual life, and you will flourish because you have deep roots due to others watering YOUR seed (the word of God). Its everyone's responsibility to help the plant grow in every human regardless of their origin story. Some of us are born into a patch of thorns, and some of us were born into this world and didn't even get a chance to flower (died in birth or so on) ... the birds will come and get those seeds and plant them elsewhere. There are no mistakes in God's creation even if it really hurts you.

My interpretation. The seed is the Holy Spirit. The ground is the hearts of men. When we evangelise, we do not plant the seed, God does that, but we prepare the soil. If the soil is shallow, the plant will grow, but the roots will be weak. If the soil is deep, the seed will take root and be strong. The sun is Christ in the second comming whose light will give life to that which is well planted but scourge the plant which roots are shallow. (I.e the judgment)

Bishop Barron missed the mark. It's not about giving it away so that it increases in you. It's pretty simple really. However much you plant God's Word in you.. 20, 30 or 60 acres, that's how much you will get back out of it. If you read very little of God's Word, you get back very little. If you read a lot of God's Word, you will get back a lot. God compares his Word to food or nourishment in many places. Jesus, the Word incarnate is symbolic of bread. He is the mana that came from Heaven.
