Putin is terrified of NATO. The notion that Putin called NATO's bluff misunderstands how NATO's strength comes in no small part from its defining defensive posture. Putin wanted to join NATO, but wanted to be exempted from the requirement criteria and get special treatment in terms of timing. "Vladimir Putin wanted Russia to join Nato but did not want his country to have to go through the usual application process and stand in line “with a lot of countries that don’t matter”..."
@sb_dunk2 жыл бұрын
I'm not anti-NATO and Putin is undoubtedly the aggressor here, I'm also not anywhere near an expert on geopolitics. Now that's out the way... Are you saying that NATO by definition is a purely defensive alliance? Don't things like airstrikes in Libya serve as a counterexample?
@rikulappi96642 жыл бұрын
Putin is not "terrified of NATO". He knows NATO is not an threat to Russia if it has any other option. NATO is a defence union which absolutely does not threaten Russia.
@pluribus_unum2 жыл бұрын
@@sb_dunk - The defining defensive posture of NATO -- a military alliance -- is not an ethos of pacifism. I don't understand the argument that Libya disproves NATO is a defensive alliance, frankly. It's been a pet claim of Putin's for over a decade though. The UN Security Council resolution NATO was implementing was drafted to protect civilians. UN Security Council Resolution 1973 "...demand[ed] 'an immediate ceasefire' and authoriz[ed] the international community to establish a no-fly zone and to use all means necessary short of foreign occupation to protect civilians."
@pluribus_unum2 жыл бұрын
@@rikulappi9664 - Regarding taking on NATO forces, the context of the comment made, Putin is terrified of NATO. Regarding the possible advantage democracy and democratic reforms in Ukraine would gain with NATO membership, I believe Putin is also very worried. Saying he's not terrified of NATO expansion is accurate, however. He simply wants Ukraine and Ukraine applying for NATO membership is the excuse.
@sb_dunk2 жыл бұрын
@@pluribus_unum I want to make it clear that I'm not trying to use a "whataboutism", I only raise this point because of the point in your original comment. I agree that Putin uses this sort of argument to justify his atrocities, but that doesn't mean it should be immediately dismissed. My point is that you say that NATO is a defensive alliance, and I agree that this doesn't explicitly mean pacifist, but what it does mean is that NATO should only act to ensure that no harm comes to a member country. NATO decided to intervene in Libya, and member countries decided to carry out airstrikes. I don't see how that is a defensive action.

You can't be a great country without a great economy. And you don't get a great economy in the 21st century by just taking over parts of a former empire. So yes, Putin is irrational here by anyone's standards. Or at least delusional about Russia's current potential.

Putin gave public speech couple of days ago where he talked about nationalizing Russian companies, including foreign ones. On top of that he said that every Russian who is against the war and the decisions of the government are enemies of the country and state. So he is not only poking a war against West but he is also poking a civil war. Last time that happened Soviet Union was born. He really is keeping his word, as he has mentioned many times that he will rebuild Soviet Union. This means that he is very logical and takes steps towards his goals, no matter the cost. Do remember that most of the Russians did live under Soviet rule so the transition to the old is quite easy to do, specially since time tends to make old horrors look like good things, until you have to relive them again and at that point it is too late.

MAIN REASONS A G A I N S T joining NATO : 1) Joining NATO means to serve as a target for Russia´s or China´s strategic nuclear missilles all the time in future, certainly not just untill Ukraine war would end. 2) USA may back off in case of nuclear war in Europe to save hundreds of their cities- than NATO would loose nuclear war in Europe. 3) Even if USA would not back off, they appreciate every new NATO land(Finland) to absorb some of Russia´s nukes, which otherwice would surely explode above USA´cities... 4) Finland managed alone in past, could manage in future. It is still better option than to be incenereted instead of some USA´s cities...USA likes to be nuclear state, on the other hand they can not defend themself against Russia´s nuclear forces, let alone to defend Europe against it! Finland would better to rely on Finish defensive means and not to mess with counting on USA and kind of stand up against nuclear superpowers like Russia and China to "fight" them one day... ( To "fight" them means- to absorb some of nukes which otherwise would explode above USA´cities very harmlessly for Finland.... 5) Mr. Stubb knows little about wars unfortunately. Joining NATO is the way how to assure the tottal destructin to Finland during a nuclear war between USA and Russia, or even between European NATO states and Russia... 6) If anybody thinks that USA is a morally "OK" NATO leader- kind of a "good guy" , than please try to google: "USA drone strikes" . You will find crimes committed by USA on civilians in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Yemen an other third world countries... 7) In case of nuclear war the desruction would be gruesome, but also very limited geographically to states involved. Joining NATO is signing completely unnecesarry death sentence, since it is signing for being targeted by SATTAN II and more of similar machines instead of some USA´s big cities.

Stubb knows about Putin as much as child knows about Taxes. Surely he is Finnish politician but he is also the generation that didn't have to deal with Russia the way the older politicians had to. He is positioned in between, somewhat appeasing Russia and somewhat trying to tie economical ties to West. He has no idea or concept of Russia as an aggressor, like many of our ministers have. He is very idealistic to the point of slightly naive and juppi enough to believe he is right. If you really want to understand Russia, you open up history book or if you want to learn the real politics and thinking between Finland and Russia, then you interview the politicians much older than him as their legacy still lives strong in our government and it is spread all over, depending whom from you ask, even if they are in same political party. In short: it is a mess. Only thing we can agree to as a nation is that Russia is a threat, that is about it.
@penguinista2 жыл бұрын
You say he is wrong, but don't say how or what is right. He seems quite clear that Russia is a threat and an aggressor. He also demonstrated a lot of knowledge of history in this interview. Sounds like you are from a different political party than him, but don't have anything useful to add.
@duhni45512 жыл бұрын
@@penguinista I did, you not understanding it is up to you. And i did mention to you that the fact that Russia is a threat is the one thing we can all agree with, what to do with that threat is another question. I don't doubt his knowledge of history either, but the conclusions he makes out of it are naive. Actually i have voted his former political party for years.
@grassoonisolaski2 жыл бұрын
He is a former prime minister of Finland. He has had the opportunity to be informed and trained by the intelligence agencies. His knowledge of Putin and Russia greatly surpassed whatever your knowledge might be and it is ridiculous assumption that you could "grade" his knowledge.
@duhni45512 жыл бұрын
@@grassoonisolaski LoL, that must be thickest BS i have ever heard =D Sure, there are some basic information that they get, but they all have their own views and approaches to Russia, you don't see similar Russian politics even inside same parties in Finland, much less between politicians at large. Why this is if they all get the same memos and training? Could it be that they all represent their own views and all the information is melted to their values and principles which forms their approach to Russia question? Also you would have to dig hard to find a Finn who doesn't know a lot about Russia and its politics, what comes to their general information about Russia and Putin, let me remind you that our current PM worked as cashier in store before his current job. So assume less, study more is my recommendation to you. Also Stubb didn't ever bother so much with foreign relations, even less with Russian relations, he was focused on Finland's EU politics. So Putin and Russia were only side markers for him. So you to assume he knows as much as you think is silly, it all depends on what they think is important. Not to mention that the grading is easy, you hear what they know and what they don't know. You see it in their actions too.

I believe he knows Finnish history quite well but he was politician in the more positive era when Russia was more friendly and open towards West. The reason why Finland joins NATO is that we, the people, had silent consensus that as long as Russia doesn't cross their border we have no reason to join NATO. Well, now they did and now we join NATO.
