I'm a beginner gardener. I don't care about "ORGANIC!!" stuff. I don't care about "HEALTHY!!" food. All I wanted to know was, how to feed my vegetables cheaply, but in a proper way. I've use the fish emulsion in zone 10a; it works majority of the times. There are times when the plants will simply stop growing even though I fertilize them every 10 day with the fish emulsion. In addition, I noticed that my pepper plants leave will get yellow and rough as if they can't extract the Nitrogen from the soil. Every 2 weeks I use 1 table spoon of epsom salts per gallon of water to water them. There won't be any improvement, so I usually pull the plants and throw them away.

So I use 90% organic some beds 100% but at times I do 1/4 chemical for stalled plants and it does help them kick back into action. It is an extremely soluble form of NPK and the rest so the plants uses it immediately. But it is a choice.

More great information Gary. I'm sure you get plenty of "Organic Nuts" Have a great day. Best wishes Bob.
@drcmotorsports7 жыл бұрын
Most of my Organic nuts (I myself am one) ask if your soil actually needs that nutrient or not. Is the soil you have going to be all used up at the end of the year after that plant has used that particular nutrient? That is the real question. But then again growing up on a large farm for most of my childhood I know what they fertilizer man used to say, and of course when the real damage was done thus causing the "Organic Nuts" to come out and about was the massive dumping of nutrients we did not need, thus just leached and left our fields anyway year after year. Its no different then pesticides. Do you have an insect problem or are you just "pre-treating" which really only works with Herbicides. Insecticides and fungicides all wash off after a few good rains anyway. So unless you actually have a problem why are you using them. So that also goes to say does your soil have enough Nitrogen? or does the pants you're planting require more than you have? I know it requires more work as a concerned farmer or gardener, but it pays off huge in the end to actually know what you are doing vs just follow directions on some package (aka following my fertilizer mans directions).

Hi Gary, I'm about to grow baby mix lettuce in containers. What should I fertilize them with? Thank you for your video!!! Sasha
@drcmotorsports7 жыл бұрын
Something with Nitrogen if you are using a sterile soil. If you bought the soil or potting mix from a big box store you will have enough Nitrogen in that soil to provide for at least 2 cuttings of the lettuces. If you are planting in newly tilled never been grown in garden areas then you will want some type of Nitrogen. I agree with Gary, use the soluble stuff for immediate plant access and in smaller quantities than on the package. Your plants will really only use a 5-5-5 vs a 15-15-15. The 15 will provide run off and most of it will go to waste anyway. So use it at 1/3 or 1/4 strength as Gary often suggests. Nitrogen for leafs & greens Phosphorus for flowers, seeds & roots Potassium for fruits (tomatoes basically the actual reason you're growing the pant other than Lettuces or greens)

good afternoon Gary !! great advice and information on water soluble fertilizer !! thanks for sharing and happy gardening !!
@TGSureal3 жыл бұрын
So I have some questions I was wondering about but can't find information on. For context I am fertilizing with Alaska fish fertilizer(5-1-1), and also morbloom(1-10-10). I am feeding tomatoes, peppers, and cukes in 3 - 8'x4'x12" raised beds. So water soluble fertilizers are immediately available to the plants, and anything not used by the plants goes into the soil and helps to improve soil life. --If I fertilize late evening, and then the next evening I water the garden, am I washing away all the nutrients from the day before that are left in the soil? The second question is.... --What if instead of a weekly feeding of the recommended dosage for adult, flowering plants, you do several feedings of a much lower dosage? Will this have adverse effects provided you properly formulate the mixture? I wanted to add that I really appreciate the help you provide with this channel, and your participation in it. This is my 3rd year gardening and Im still learning so much. Thank you so much.
@THERUSTEDGARDEN3 жыл бұрын
Several feeds at lower doses is good strategy. The excess will stay in the soil BTW and the plants use it over time. In theory you can go every 2 weeks. Lots of rain can was excess water soluble away but you need a lot. This is more true for earth beds. They can leach out more in containers cause the water runs through the soil.

hi gary. So would you continuously use the 5-1-1 for leafy growing plants and for others such as tomatos, peppers, onions, garlic, you would start with the 5-1-1 and the swap to the 4-8-4 when the plant needs to concentrate on fruit production and roots.

Gary, would love to see a video where we get your feedback on what the chemical fertilizers do to the environment - both with regards to nitrogen runoff, but also with regards to how chemical fertilizer is produced. And, also, if these large companies that produce chemical fertilizer are doing it ethically/responsibly?
@THERUSTEDGARDEN7 жыл бұрын
Only in excess. That is the problem. They were terrible abuse on large scale farming and run off was and is a problem. At 1/4 strength you arent hurting the world. Run off of blood meal is bad for water too. However, some compaines arent ethical and some are. But we are also buying our organics from them. Sad.

Nope. Insoluble is granular and you scatter. You can dissolve a lot in water but that makes them dissolved. They still need to break down by microbiology for the nutrients to be available. If it is well loaded probably not at all. If you want to cover the basics. A little water soluble at planting to get it off to a good start. Hi Gary, can I use fish fertilizer when the plant is producing fruit? Thank you!
@THERUSTEDGARDEN7 жыл бұрын
You can. It just has more nitrogen so people ease back on nitrogen. But the number is not that high. The key is steady feeding.

Hi Gary! Can I use fish emulsion to fertilize my tomato seedlings? If yes, at what strength? Thanks so much!
@THERUSTEDGARDEN6 жыл бұрын
You can. You don't really have to cut it down as it is a 3-1-1. Beside that it smells indoors, there are no other issues. You can support The Rusted Garden by using this link for anything you purchase on Amazon. It doesn't have to be garden related. Anything you purchase gives a % return back to The Rusted Garden amzn.to/2ttyray Thanks for using my link. It helps fund my garden videos!

The problem with nitrogen fertilizer is that is makes plant grow fast but end causing nutrients deficiencies, while organic ones are slow release but allow bacteria and fungi to feed the plant and give them micronutrients It's been noticed how nitrogen application makes plant produce more above ground dry matter than roots, so the plant have less available water during droughts and less trace minerals My thinking been that i produce lot of organic carbon by feeding grasses crops chemical fertilizers, while not feeding vegetables anything but composted plants and grasses and kitchen leftovers

I always cut fertilizer way down, but why do manufacturers want you to use so much if it can potentially over fertilize and kill your plants?? Doesn't make sense, sure you'd use more product but if it killed your plants you'd never use it again...

If you use a chemical fertilizer, you aren't growing organically, right? Is this the case or not?
@THERUSTEDGARDEN7 жыл бұрын
Im not. Thats a whole other crazy world. Pigs blood from slaughter houses makes blood meal. Crushed steamed cow bone from slaughter house waste makes bone meal. Compost is king if you can make enough. The rest of the stuff we are buying is just stuff we are buying. I use 90% organic products and the chemicals. So I fail as organic. Wise use is key.

If you grow it at home and use what you have available it actually offsets the "organics" thought process. And to be even more organic you should actually eat only whats in season, because by the time I buy and eat my "organic" strawberries from Mexico, does it really matter how much fertilizer I use locally if I just used 600 gallons of gas to get my "organic" strawberries here in Frozen Indiana in the winter? At some point we have to think "organically" and still actually be Organic. So its leads back tot he anti-organic thoughts from some people as to why "organic" gets the good or bad wrap from people. How Organic is a Strawberry, apple or banana grown in Mexico "Organically" if I am eating it in the winter in Maryland?

your plants will be much hardier and nutritious if you use only organic. using synthetic crack creates a dependency that is not sustainable. i use 100% organic, and my peas and brassicae were still thriving in 90F, whereas my neighbors had to pull them when day time temps reached the 70's. it was mid 90's last week.. my carrots, radishes, lettuce, spinach and kale are still tasty and healthy. if you were to grow 2 bell peppers, side by side. one organic, one crack... then take the fruit of each and set them side by side the rate of decay will be much higher on the crack version as it lacks the nutrients it requires for stability. (in my experience). good on you for taking the time to explain liquid fertilizer to people who may not have understood the difference.
@THERUSTEDGARDEN7 жыл бұрын
Remember I said 1/4 strength. Thats not crack. Its not the product it is how you use it. Using a 24 nitrogen soluble like Miracle Gro would give you nothing but leafy tomato growth that is attack by aphids. I agree. It is how you use it. Thats what I hope people get.
@syknoobwoo7 жыл бұрын
i understand your point, and i understand how it may be a viable option for someone who gardens in containers and leads a plastic sterile lifestyle... my issue is that it's the antithesis to healthy nutritious eating. at the end of the season.. crack users have to trash their soil... whereas i have plants that have been in the same soil for multiple years and it's absolutely a pleasure to run through your hands and see all the life in it.... still completely sustainable for further use... i certainly don't want to disrespect the work you do. i love your attitude. i just have such a strong distaste for synthetics... again, thank you for all you do and the time you took even making this reply. i read a lot on biology and botany. one of my favorites that i think the average gardener would find easy to grasp is The Ultimate Guide to Soil, by Anna Hess. if you haven't read it i think you may enjoy it.

The biggest complaint stems from the use of fossil fuels as your insoluble or chemical fertilizers. Its not that they are bad for you or not bad for you we all know that part, its the use of fossil fuels to make them especially when we have PLENTY of organics that can recreate fertilizers for us. Most real "complainers" between the difference of chemical or organic do not understand this difference, but the true complainers of the issue like myself understand that N is N and P is P no matter where it comes from to the plant anyway, its just where we get it then apply it to our plants. And yes years ago, the farmers and gardeners of the past had little to know knowledge of how soil works, so they listened to their fertilizer salesman of course and they were told to just apply it at this rate regardless of need. (Having grown up on a farm I remember those conversations. until we learned better of course). True gardeners and true farmers are concerned now and actually care what they are doing to our planet and with technology we have equipment that allows us to apply this amount here and that amount there with no movement or change from us the farmer. So technology has helped us all. Heres the big truth though. Before you go applying ANYTHING to any plant or garden, do you know what it needs? Do you know what the plants will use and how much your soil requires to sustain that plant for the growing season? Once again most gardeners DO NOT and that again leads us to trouble with application, its no different than with pesticides. Does your garden or container need Nitrogen? Phosphorus? Potassium? Even the Micronurtrients? Before applying anything have a soil test done and see if you actually need to add anything at all.

No you will not attract animals. From my experience.
@THERUSTEDGARDEN6 жыл бұрын
A lot of people using bone and blood meal have animals come in. My dog will actually eat the dirt when I side dress with it. Fish emulsion tends to bring in cats. However, it varies.

Gary Pilarchik (The Rusted Garden) lol I live in the country bro I don't have those problems. My problems are like squirrels, coon , and deer. Lol moth balls and peeing close to your garden helps A LOT. DON'T piss on your plants but 50 yards give or take. And also human hair is good for compost and it keeps animals away!
