I use fish emulsion as my main water-soluble fertilizer. It is a great foliar fertilizer. This is how I make it, how often I apply it, and use it on different vegetable garden crops. I cover the details you might not find elsewhere, like how much to pour on a plant.

Thank you Gary for your knowledge. You have encouraged me to plant more than 5 containers! I'm using your links on Amazon and also visit your store. Just want you to know you have helped me in so many ways to expand and feel more confident in the garden. My cucumbers are only 1/2 inch long right now, but better than last year. I'm in 7a and in NM we have 95-100 degree temps. The shade cloth I ordered should make a difference and using the fish emulation for the first time today. Hope my cats don't go crazy! Thanks again!

Thanks for the link support. And enjoy the container garden. I am glad your feel confident and are expanding. Temps are hot, and that shade cloth will help. I tried Neptune a few years ago. I really didn’t notice much difference. Plus, it is very expensive. Starting last fall, I have been using liquid gold. It is free and it has made a big difference. I also have a homemade barrel composter that works great too. We will see how spring vegetables do. So far so good. I have been doing monthly videos of my progress. Thanks for all the tips.

We have a roller coasters weather here in Mi. Patiently waiting for that set weather to plant. God Bless! p.s I too loved and used fish emulsion(alaska 5.1.1) always have one available each year.

Due to career moves, I've started a lot of gardens. Got to one place in late fall. It was a spec house finished just as the mortgage crisis hitting. The owner couldn't sell it, so he leased it. The yard looked bad. All I could do was put down compost, cover with leaf mulch & wait until spring. I always plant a crop of simple greens to see how any new bed does. I always felt silly because I never had a bed fail at greens. Well, that one did. The contactor must have used crap top or even subsoil to finish the yard. I had to shoot synthetic N through to save the greens crop while piling on organic matter since the local Ag Co-op had no FE available. I finally found some, but it hardly mattered. It would have taken at least 2 years+ to rehab that soil. If you don't have N in the soil & little to no soil structure, you're at zero. The rhizome grass even struggled. Fortunately, we could walk away in late summer & weren't stuck with the house.

Yes. I did. I do have that and use it. I wonder if there is another product with more P and K in it. when watering a dry surface, I would think dampening the soil first, especially if its compost. it takes a lot of water to just get to an inch of depth. when the soil is damp, the emulsion will actually get down that far. If the soil isn't moist, that little bit of moisture will only dampen at most a 1/4 inch and probably less.

Gary - I was revisiting this video. If you ever have a chance I would love to see a video discussing any pest problems you had while using fish emulsion as I am worried about Racoons and Rats digging in my plants. Also would love to see a video about making organic granulated fertilizer into a liquid fertilizer. I know how to do so however I'm concerned about the amount to utilize once in liquid form. I have trouble in my area finding the ratios I like and Fox Farms liquid fertilizer is nice stuff however so expensive here in San Francisco. Would like to start dissolving and using the granular into my own liquid fertilizer to save some money. I do use bone and blood meals however I need something that acts faster as these become available to the plant later in the season. Cheers!!!
@THERUSTEDGARDEN
@THERUSTEDGARDEN 2 жыл бұрын
So I have had no issues. People do have issues with bone meal, blood meal and fish emulsion but it seems to be hit or miss. The granular organic won't dissolve. It has to compost down. I like organic but if your are on a budget the, chemical water soluble ferts work and are safe. A combo of them and organic granular is perfectly fine. Thanks for this. I started using this later in my first garden last year but have a question about watering the tomatoes. You mentioned soaking the leaves. Is that just with this fertilizer every two weeks? I'd seen something that said not to wet the leaves when watering.
@THERUSTEDGARDEN
@THERUSTEDGARDEN 3 жыл бұрын
For fish emulsion you can water the leaves. They can take nutrients that way. Not a must. But wetting leaves is a myth. When it rains, leaves get soaked and plants have survived millions of years. I would water early am or during the day when the sun and wind can dry them but that is not a must. Hi Gary. Your videos are incredibly informative so thank you for creating and distributing. I'm using fish emulsion for the first time. Thank you!

I switch to Agrothrive as it's a bit more balanced and my dog was eating the soil when I used firs emulsion. If you are able switching to another water-soluble with more P and K is technically better. However, using fish emulsion all season wont harm anything. My first year gardening. My garden is looking great due to all of your tips and information. And I thank you for that. The question I have for you, with all of my container plants(which is a lot) is there an easier way to fertilize other than using a watering can? I use fish emulsion like you recommend, but I have to use at least 10 or more cans. Thanks in advance.
@THERUSTEDGARDEN
@THERUSTEDGARDEN 3 жыл бұрын
Congrats on your first year. Well if you set them up with fertilizer, granular type or compost... you can probably feed them less when small with the water soluble. There is no exact way but once you put in plants, use the fish emulsion, sometimes you can wait 6-8 weeks to do it again based on what is in you container mix. There is just no easy way to say that in a video though. LOL. Here's a rabbit hole for you...check out the "rain gutter grow system". It's quite the set up and since it's your first year, not something to jump into. I like Gary's Channel because he offers simple, no-nonsense gardening but still great advice. This is definitely veering off that path. But if you get bitten by the bug, it's a completely self-watering container garden system. Really a different animal. I'm not necessarily recommending it, but it's fun to see how people around the world have set it up. A quick KZbin search will get you there.

Gary, thank you for sharing your knowledge. I do have question though. I have a zucchini plant that is about 18” high (growing vertically) in a 5 gal bucket. I got one good sized fruit off if it but it’s not producing a whole lot of flowers. I gave it some Dr. earth 4-6-4 and have started fish emulsion 5-1-1 every 7 days in between those feedings. The plant looks very healthy but I’m wondering if I’m applying enough fish emulsion. Should I be giving it like a 1/2 gal or do? Right now, I just wet the surface and let it sink in. Do you I’m giving it enough or too much?

They aren't the same thing, so it shouldn't work the same. I would think fish emulsion is more readily taken up by plant roots while worm castings will take more time even if they are mixed with water.
@rachelhall4808
@rachelhall4808 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah. Let it sit in the water for like 10-20 minutes. They call it tea because you let it “steep”. I’m not sure that works as a foliar feed but it works great for the soil. Then put the spent castings in/on the soil.

Hi Gary - it's been pretty cool here, high 60's, low 50's in SoCal. I was wondering... I just planted some tomato transplants in fabric containers with mulch. It's been 7 days since the first watering and the soil is still moist/wet 1-2 inches from surface. Is it okay to wait until it dries out more, or should I water it a bit anyway because it's a new week? Thanks in advance. :) Ordered your new book and a few seeds from your shop, excited to read it and look thru all your garden photos.

Hi Gary, if you already have blood meal mixed into the soil, would you recommend less frequent feedings of the fish emulsion? Thanks.
@THERUSTEDGARDEN
@THERUSTEDGARDEN 3 жыл бұрын
Yep. That is why it is hard to say exactly when to use it. But blood meal takes time to breakdown and be available. I would give everything an early does of emulsion. And not worry going every 2 weeks less they look like they need it. 1x a month as the get bigger. Gary, not sure if you'll see this but I have tried to find the answer in one of you videos but so far haven't found. I planted onion sets and my onion transplants in my new raised beds.
