Not really .. I consider myself a smark. Not because i want to expose the buisness but because i love it so passionately. I love knowing backstage stuffs and things of that nature. We smarks know its a work and still watch. Granted, we scrutinize but thats what critics do. We want the best possible product from talent we know can deliver. The creative side needs to do more to keep current and not have holes all through their storylines. If anything smarks keep this damn buisness going. Well us and the kids .. as long as Undertaker has a breath in his undead body, let the man show what he is capable of. Too many people have a judgement to call on stuff that they don't understand. It's nice that they care enough to have an opinion, but it comes down to two guys in the ring, not the guy with a keyboard or smartphone, calling the shots.

As a worker, I agree with his statement. There are no such thing as an "expert" on the internet, who have never laced up boots. A critic? Sure, everyone's a critic but a very select few people who are real professionals. The term "smart mark" is an insult and should be considered as the biggest. We only LET them believe what we let them believe, in turn makes us the control of their knowledge of the business. There's real wrestling fans and smarks. Smarks THINK they know how it should be ran, which alot of promotions nowadays in the independent scene go under because of their "knowledge". And the real wrestling fans will always be vocal and tell you what they would love to see.

That's why I tell them to get in the ring and do a drill. Of course they're gonna say no, and they'll go off and run their mouths after being put in their place. I had one kid try to tell me that, "as fake as that looked, I could do better." I invited him to practice on day and told him to show me. I had this kid doing blowup drills: running the ropes, quarter rolls, front rolls and backwards rolls, I had him doing it over and over again till he got it right, just like how I was taught. Needless to say he started respecting everyone around him after that planned three hour session, he quit after 30 minutes after I let him exit the ring to puke.

I happen to love Mark. He's hands down THE GREATEST and one of THE BEST big man wrestlers of the business. And I've followed his career all the way back to his WCCW days under his then ring name of "Texas Red". And then moving onto the USWA as "The Master of Pain" managed by "Dirty" Dutch Mantell. However, I disagree with him in some aspects of the only way to "FULLY" know about pro wrestling. Is if one has been in the ring or laced up a pair of boots as he put it. However, i wonder if he shares that same sentiment towards people like Bill Apter or the late god rest his soul Gordon Solie...? Who coincidentally for those who are "newbies" to this business was "The Dean" of pro wrestling. And who paved the way for announcers like Jim Ross & Tony Schiavone. I've followed this sport for nearly 20+yrs now and have also been a part of it on the "indy circuit" helping to promote various wrestling events. That all said, Mark's right to a degree don't listen to everything you hear on the internet about various "rumors" or who should be pushed etc...Because those folks aren't the script writers who are sitting around the table with there promoter. Trying to come up with a new storyline or an angle to freshen up an already established feud. However, after spending as much time as I have in this business. I'd like to think I have a pretty damn good understanding of the "politics" that go on behind the curtain. As a matter of fact one of my old high school buddies is currently wrestling right now. Just Wikipedia the tag team "The Heartbreak Express" and you'll see "Fabulous" Phil Davis aka Phil Dodson. I'm really proud of him being able to live out his dream in becoming a pro wrestler because he literally; ate, breathed, & shit this business 24/7. Which in all honesty folks is the ONLY way you'll make it and survive the grueling and unforgiving nature that automatically comes along with being in this tough profession.
@robintst
@robintst 9 жыл бұрын
Well, I accept that I'm smart to the business only as much as I can learn of it from the outside. After a while though, I eventually got so burned out on mentally dissecting the product for faults to have something to complain about that I lost sight of those bright spots where I sometimes forget everything I know and just get caught up in the moment of a good story being told in the ring. Now I feel like I've found that happy balance between being smart and being a fan again. When I see the work play out well and all the desired reactions are received, it makes me happy that it was well executed. I don't like to say "push this guy" or "bury this guy," I just sit back and watch everything play out and really just entertain myself thinking about where the angles could or would lead. Once in a blue moon, I'm on the same wavelength as WWE and I guess correct where they were going to varying degrees. I agree with Undertaker here though, a lot of the younger guys don't have a good grasp of ring psychology and it's really the only topic I cover anymore online because it's something I do understand well and I really feel there's a need to get back to that kind of performance more often. The really gifted guys from Taker's generation and thereabouts could work a crowd with just a facial expression or mannerism. They didn't need to climb to the top rope and do 29 different flips. There's a place for acrobatics but you can't stack a card with guys whose only gimmicks are high spots, you'll never give the people a chance to come down and relax if you're going pedal to the metal the entire time. Wrestling is a performance art, you have to be able to convey drama physically and keep up the perception that it's a competition between athletic characters that the fans are predisposed to love and hate. I don't care what arbitrary "entertainment" labels they attach to it, pro-wrestling is at it's best when it's being portrayed as a legitimate sport. The fans don't believe it is legitimate anymore like in the Kayfabe days but they do believe in the portrayal of it being done well without insulting their intelligence.

I think the problem is the arrogance with which some smarks convey their opinion. They won't say I personally don't like X and y they'll say stuff like doing so and so is what's best for business as if they know the ins and outs of running a billion dollar corporation. They don't take into consideration a lot of the other factors that probably go into making these decisions that can only be known by those on the inside...they don't know the wrestlers their habits and work ethic personally, they don't have company and market data, shareholder interests, PR interests and crap like that that i don't even know myself tbh. But they'll just sit there and be like push this wrestler cuz i like him, fire that wrestler cuz I don't like them. WWE is still a company and can't cater solely to a niche segment of one stakeholder group LOL

the one thing all these old school guys forget is that they were all "just fans" at one point also. they think because someone hasn't laced up boots, they don't know what they're talking about. it doesn't take lacing up boots to understand the game. it takes studying all aspects of the sport and learning everything you can, watching all the footage you can. you can know a hell of a lot about something and what may work and what doesn't by observation. but people in the wrestling industry never want to admit that something they did sucks or that things may need to change and just fall back on the "oh, you don't know what you're talking about. you're just a fan" line. some people aren't just fans and actually know what they're talking about.

To be fair, I'd say fans are the ones who _would_ know who should be pushed, because they know who they and other fans enjoy watching. WWE even publishes videos talking about how WCW screwed up by not listening to fan feedback about Jericho, Guerrero, etc. Smartasses might be abrasive, but they're also at least partially right quite a bit.
@KAPTAINmORGANnWo4eva
@KAPTAINmORGANnWo4eva 9 жыл бұрын
***** Andre, Hogan, and Warrior were all built before smarks were even really a thing, and smartasses love Austin, Rock, and Piper. The only thing that would have changed would have been Cena not monopolizing the main event. The last time WWE listened to the smarks, CM Punk sold more merch than Cena, Daniel Bryan got launched into the stratosphere, and NXT got PPVs. Plus, it's de facto the same thing pushing someone based on smark feedback or normal feedback. Wrestling personas are more about hype and promotion than the person behind the character. That's not true for everyone, but any of the roided-up goons in the late 70's could have been Hulk Hogan, whereas someone with talent on the level of an Eddie Guerrero or Kurt Angle only comes along once in a while.

You're right Taker... Who are we to say John Cena or Roman Reigns is trash? The dwindling ratings, the nose dive in profitability, and the fact that NJPW is quickly rising past the WWE means nothing right? I mean I have never "laced up a pair of wrestling boots", but I'm pretty sure the evidence and the statistics agree with me, not Vince McMahon.. You can tell us how "wrong" we were when NJPW releases "The Rise and Fall of WWE" documentary in the future. I agree about ring psychology. And. yes, there is the fair share of morons calling themselves "smarks". But what pretty funny here is that he's kind of attacking the fanbase that wants to see that his legacy is protected. The smarks want Lesnar to beat Cena, because we know Cena doesn't need the "rub" of beating the guy who beat the Streak. It would be way more logical for Brock to not lose again until it is done to put over a young talent. If Cena wins, it's like they are saying "Screw the Streak". It's the anti-smarks and mark s that don't care and are rooting for Cena. I ain't even mad. But he's attacking the wrong people.

Of course, with the internet and the shoots and the exposure of the business throughout the years, people like Meltzer and other journalists, and even us fans, have been able to understand the business and learn more and more about it. And sometimes people like Meltzer are right about some stuff. But in my opinion, taking these guys' opinions religiously is bad for the business. Because when Meltzer's view points influnce us 'smart marks' and, most importantly, people in the business, it's bad for everybody. Sorry mark but you can't just deflect criticism from WWE's objectively horrendous booking by saying "The fans have never booked a show in their lives so they don't know" by that logic, we can't criticise a bad ending to a film or a bad song. Or criticise politicians for bad decisions, or if we hire a plumber to fix our pipes and they do a terrible job, we're not able to criticise them because we don't know how to do it. If you're getting paid way more than the average person to do your job, you better be damn good at it and put some real effort in. I have all the respect in the world for mark Callaway.
